A variety of experimental and epidemiological studies lend support to the Developmental Origin of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept. Yet, the actual mechanisms accounting for mid- and long-term ...effects of early-life exposures remain unclear. Epigenetic alterations such as changes in DNA methylation, histone modifications and the expression of certain RNAs have been suggested as possible mediators of long-term health effects of environmental stressors.
This report captures discussions and conclusions debated during the last Prenatal Programming and Toxicity meeting held in Japan. Its first aim is to propose a number of criteria that are critical to support the primary contribution of epigenetics in DOHaD and intergenerational transmission of environmental stressors effects. The main criteria are the full characterization of the stressors, the actual window of exposure, the target tissue and function, the specificity of the epigenetic changes and the biological plausibility of the linkage between those changes and health outcomes. The second aim is to discuss long-term effects of a number of stressors such as smoking, air pollution and endocrine disruptors in order to identify the arguments supporting the involvement of an epigenetic mechanism. Based on the developed criteria, missing evidence and suggestions for future research will be identified. The third aim is to critically analyze the evidence supporting the involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in intergenerational and transgenerational effects of environmental exposure and to particularly discuss the role of placenta and sperm.
While the article is not a systematic review and is not meant to be exhaustive, it critically assesses the contribution of epigenetics in the long-term effects of environmental exposures as well as provides insight for future research.

Patient-reported outcomes (PROs), routinely collected as a part of cancer clinical trials, have been linked with survival in numerous clinical studies, but a comprehensive critical review has not ...been reported. This study systematically assessed the impact of PROs on patient survival after a cancer diagnosis within the context of clinical trials.
Cancer clinical trials that assessed baseline PROs and mortality were identified through MEDLINE (through December 2006) supplemented by the Cochrane database, American Society of Clinical Oncology/European Society for Medical Oncology abstracts and hand searches. Inclusion criteria were publication in English language and use of multivariate analyses of PROs that controlled for one or more clinical factors. Two raters reviewed each study, abstracted data, and assessed study quality; two additional raters verified abstractions.
In 36 of 39 studies (N = 13,874), at least one PRO was significantly associated with survival (P < .05) in multivariate analysis, with varying effect sizes. Studies of lung (n = 12) and breast cancer (n = 8) were most prevalent. The most commonly assessed PRO was quality of life, measured by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 in 56% of studies. Clinical variables adjusted for included performance status (PS), treatment arm, stage, weight loss, and serum markers. Results indicated that PROs provide distinct prognostic information beyond standard clinical measures in cancer clinical trials.
PROs might be considered for stratification purposes in future trials, as they were often better predictors of survival than PS. Studies are needed to determine whether interventions that improve PROs also increase survival and to identify explanatory mechanisms through which PROs relate to survival.
Abstract
During radiotherapy sessions to treat brain tumors or head-and-neck cancers, some patients experience unusual visual and/or olfactory perceptions. This prospective study sought to answer two ...questions: (i) what proportion of patients experience these unpleasant sensations?, and (ii) which organs are responsible? Eligible patients had brain or near-orbital tumors treated by helical tomotherapy. All were aged 10 years or older, able to communicate, and interviewed by a radiation oncologist at least once weekly during radiation therapy. If they had experienced such sensations, they were encouraged to join the second phase of the study. The patients were asked to indicate, using a button, when a sensation commenced and ended. The recorded data were collated with the treatment log. Thirty-eight consecutive patients were eligible. Twenty-six experienced visual and 13 olfactory sensations. The radiation doses to the organs related to the visual or olfactory sensations did not differ between patients who reported sensations and those who did not. Seventeen patients were enrolled in the second phase of the study. All 14 with visual sensations reported that the sensations occurred when the X-rays passed at eye level. Olfactory sensations were reported by eight out of nine patients when the X-rays passed through the olfactory epithelium and/or ethmoid sinus level. In conclusion, 68% of patients experienced visual sensations caused by X-rays passing through the level of the eyes, and 34% complained of olfactory sensations. With the exception of one patient, olfactory sensations occurred when the X-rays passed through the levels of the olfactory epithelium and/or ethmoid sinus.
We show that modularity maximization with the resolution parameter offers a unifying framework of graph partitioning. In this framework, we demonstrate that the spectral method exhibits universal ...detectability, irrespective of the value of the resolution parameter, as long as the graph is partitioned. Furthermore, we show that when the resolution parameter is sufficiently small, a first-order phase transition occurs, resulting in the graph being unpartitioned.
We have revealed the fundamental mechanism of specific Cs(+) adsorption into Prussian blue (PB) in order to develop high-performance PB-based Cs(+) adsorbents in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear ...accident. We compared two types of PB nanoparticles with formulae of Fe(III)4Fe(II)(CN)63·xH2O (x = 10-15) (PB-1) and (NH4)0.70Fe(III)1.10Fe(II)(CN)6·1.7H2O (PB-2) with respect to the Cs(+) adsorption ability. The synthesised PB-1, by a common stoichiometric aqueous reaction between 4Fe(3+) and 3Fe(II)(CN)6(4-), showed much more efficient Cs(+) adsorption ability than did the commercially available PB-2. A high value of the number of waters of crystallization, x, of PB-1 was caused by a lot of defect sites (vacant sites) of Fe(II)(CN)6(4-) moieties that were filled with coordination and crystallization water molecules. Hydrated Cs(+) ions were preferably adsorbed via the hydrophilic defect sites and accompanied by proton-elimination from the coordination water. The low number of hydrophilic sites of PB-2 was responsible for its insufficient Cs(+) adsorption ability.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients with stage 3 mandibular medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) treated using a submental island flap in ...combination with mylohyoid muscle reconstruction after rim mandibulectomy. The medical records of 12 patients treated between January 2019 and April 2022 were analysed retrospectively. Primary wound healing was assessed as the maintenance of full mucosal coverage without signs of infection at 6 months postoperatively. The follow-up period ranged from 7 to 38 months, with an average of 21.8 months. All 12 patients (100%) experienced primary wound healing, with normal mouth opening and occlusion, and without pathological mandibular fracture or facial aesthetic problems during the follow-up period. Postoperative panoramic images revealed new bone formation in the treated areas of the mandible in four patients. During the follow-up period, one patient continuing bevacizumab and zoledronate administration for the primary cancer developed MRONJ in the same area at 13 months postoperatively and finally died. Hence the total success rate was 91.7%. In summary, for patients with stage 3 mandibular MRONJ treated with rim mandibulectomy, the submental island flap combined with mylohyoid muscle is an effective reconstructive option for wound-healing and possible bone regeneration of denuded bone.

The cleavage rate (50%) and blastocyst rate (13.6%) in the GT-MP group was lower than that of the in vitro production control group (80.2% and 32.6%, respectively). The second experiment evaluated the same parameters using PB instead of MP; the GT-PB group had lower fertilization (82.3% vs. 96.2%) and blastocyst (7.7% vs. 36.8%) rates than the control group. No differences in the amount of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were observed between groups. Finally, GT-MP was performed using vitrified oocytes (GT-MPV) as a source of genetic material. The cleavage rate of the GT-MPV group (68.4%) was similar to that of the vitrified oocytes (VIT) control group (70.0%) and to that of the control IVP group (81.25%,

< 0.05). The blastocyst rate of GT-MPV (15.7) did not differ neither from the VIT control group (5.0%) nor from the IVP control group (35.7%). The results suggested that the structures reconstructed by the GT-MPV and GT-PB technique develop in embryos even if vitrified oocytes are used.

The structure of liquid silicates is commonly described as a statistical mixture of various atomic entities with relative abundances that can vary with pressure, temperature, and composition. ...Unfortunately, this view remains largely theoretical due to scarce experimental reports on the silicate melt structure, in particular under pressure. We performed X-ray diffraction of the SiO
2
end member to probe the melting curve up to ~ 120 GPa and 7000 K, and the melt structure up to ~ 80 GPa. We confirm the steep increase of the melting curve above ~ 14 GPa when stishovite becomes stable over coesite in subsolidus conditions, with a slope of about 80 K/GPa. Then, around 45 GPa and 5400 K, the melting curve flattens significantly, an effect most likely reflecting the densification of the SiO
2
melt structure. The signal of diffuse X-ray scattering is compatible with a change of the Si coordination number from 4 to 6 along the melting curve, in agreement with previous works reporting a similar evolution during the cold compression of SiO
2
glass. Because of the limited pressure range (within 10 to 20 GPa) in which the melting curve changes its slope, we speculate a difficult coexistence of tetrahedral SiO
4
and octahedral SiO
6
units in SiO
2
melt at high pressures.

The life history, reproductive ecology and habitat utilization of the Itasenpara (deepbody) bitterling Acheilognathus longipinnis were investigated in a lowland segment of the Moo River in Toyama ...Prefecture, central Honshu, Japan. Analysis of 1285 individuals revealed that the study population comprised a single size class, an age at maturation of 3 months and a life span of 1 year. On the basis of the growth pattern, the life cycle was divided into two stages: the juvenile stage, characterized by rapid growth, and the adult stage at which growth ceased. Spawning by A. longipinnis was recorded between early September and late October. Female A. longipinnis in the 0+ year age class began to mature when they reached a standard length (LS) of 56·4 mm. Mature females had a large clutch size (maximum 273 eggs) and deposited highly adhesive and relatively large eggs (2·55 mm3; major axis, 3·12 mm; minor axis, 1·22 mm) via a short ovipositor (mean length, 21·5 mm) into freshwater mussels. The embryos remained in the gill cavities of the freshwater mussels (used as a spawning substratum) and emerged as juveniles (LS, 9 mm). Habitat utilization during spawning was analysed using a generalized linear model. The best‐fit model showed that three environmental factors (freshwater mussel availability, water depth and vegetation cover) were important variables for habitat utilization by A. longipinnis. Shallow areas (water depth, 250–330 mm) created for rice paddy management and areas with an abundance of cover were particularly effective for predator avoidance. These results suggest that maintenance of water level fluctuations corresponding with rice cultivation and the abundance of vegetation on the river bank (particularly avoidance of concrete revetments) is essential for conservation of this species under current practices for rice cultivation in Japan.
