Most hybrid brain-computer interfaces (hBCI) aim at improving the performance of single-input BCI. Many combinations are possible to configure an hBCI, such as using multiple brain input signals, ...different stimuli or more than one input system. Multiple studies have been done since 2010 where such interfaces have been tested and analyzed. Results and conclusions are promising but little has been discussed as to what is the best approach for the pediatric population, should they use hBCI as an assistive technology. Children might face greater challenges when using BCI and might benefit from less complex interfaces. Hence, in this scoping review we included 42 papers that developed hBCI systems for the purpose of control of assistive devices or communication software, and we analyzed them through the lenses of potential use in clinical settings and for children. We extracted taxonomic categories proposed in previous studies to describe the types of interfaces that have been developed. We also proposed interface characteristics that could be observed in different hBCI, such as type of target, number of targets and number of steps before selection. Then, we discussed how each of the extracted characteristics could influence the overall complexity of the system and what might be the best options for applications for children. Effectiveness and efficiency were also collected and included in the analysis. We concluded that the least complex hBCI interfaces might involve having a brain inputs and an external input, with a sequential role of operation, and visual stimuli. Those interfaces might also use a minimal number of targets of the strobic type, with one or two steps before the final selection. We hope this review can be used as a guideline for future hBCI developments and as an incentive to the design of interfaces that can also serve children who have motor impairments.
The Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) is a comprehensive, multiwavelength study of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the local universe. Here we present low resolution Spitzer ...Infrared Spectrograph spectra covering 5-38 mu m and provide a basic analysis of the mid-IR spectral properties observed for nearby LIRGs. In a companion paper, we discuss detailed fits to the spectra and compare the LIRGs to other classes of galaxies. When compared to the MIR spectra of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z ~ 2, both the average GOALS LIRG and ULIRG spectra are more absorbed at 9.7 mu m and the average GOALS LIRG has more PAH emission. However, when the AGN contributions to both the local GOALS LIRGs and the high-z SMGs are removed, the average local starbursting LIRG closely resembles the starburst-dominated SMGs.
The downstream events and target genes of p53 in the process of senescence are not fully understood. Here, we report a novel function of the forkhead transcription factor Foxp3, which is a key player ...in mediating T-cell inhibitory functions, in p53-mediated cellular senescence. The overexpression of Foxp3 in mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) accelerates senescence, whereas Foxp3 knockdown leads to escape from p53-mediated senescence in p53-expressing MEFs. Consistent with these results, Foxp3 expression resulted in the induction of senescence in epithelial cancer cells, including MCF7 and HCT116 cells. Foxp3 overexpression also increased the intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS inhibitor N-acetyl-l-cysteine rescued cells from Foxp3-expression-induced senescence. Furthermore, the elevated ROS levels that accompanied Foxp3 overexpression were paralleled by an increase in p21 expression. Knockdown of p21 in Foxp3-expressing MEFs abrogated the Foxp3-dependent increase in ROS levels, indicating that Foxp3 acts through the induction of p21 and the subsequent ROS elevation to trigger senescence. Collectively, these results suggest that Foxp3 is a downstream target of p53 that is sufficient to induce p21 expression, ROS production and p53-mediated senescence.

The great demand for efficient and low-cost materials for energy and environmental applications has been inspiring researchers to develop novel and advanced materials. Recently, ...layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are found to be admirable materials for various applications owing to their tunable elemental composition and diverse nanostructures. The preparation of binder-free LDHs thin-film electrodes has attracted great attention in the field of supercapacitors, electrocatalysts and sensors. The electrodeposition method exhibits the capability of fabricating binder-free, uniform and well-oriented thin films with tunable elemental composition. In the present review, we provide a detailed electrodeposition mechanism behind the formation of LDHs with nucleation and growth processes. Also, we summarize the literature on electrodeposited LDHs based electrode materials for energy and environmental applications. In energy storage applications, a loading amount of active materials on the substrate is crucial to improve the areal and volumetric capacities. Therefore, the utilization of low-cost and scalable scaffold materials such as carbon nanofibers, graphene foam, etc. is highly recommended.

Piezoelectric materials (PZT) have shown the ability to convert mechanical forces into an electric field in response to the application of mechanical stresses or vice versa. This property of the ...materials has found extensive applications in a vast array of areas including sensors and actuators. The study presented in this paper targets the modeling of a PZT bender for voltage and power generation by transforming ambient vibrations into electrical energy. This device can potentially replace the battery that supplies the power in a microwatt range necessary for operating sensors and data transmission. One of the advantages is that it is maintenance-free over a long time span.
The role of hypomethylating agent therapy (HMT) as a bridge to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) remains undetermined. We ...investigated the feasibility of HMT followed by alloHCT in patients with MDS. In all, 19 patients who received HMT followed by alloHCT were analyzed. A total of 7 patients were classified as low-risk and 12 as high-risk, based on World Health Organization (WHO) classification at the time of HMT. HMT consisted of decitabine in 9 patients and azacitidine in 10. After HMT, two patients achieved CR, six mCR, three hematologic improvement alone, and six SD in terms of best response. HMT did not alter WHO classification in 15 patients (79%), whereas 1 patient (5%) improved and 3 (16%) progressed to AML. Most patients (95%) received a non-myeloablative conditioning regimen based on fludarabine/BU/anti-thymocyte globulin, and peripheral blood-mobilized stem cells. Neutrophil and platelet engraftments were achieved in 95 and 79% of patients, respectively. The incidences of acute and chronic GVHD were 42 and 26%, respectively. In all, 2-year OS rates were 68%, and the overall outcomes of those who achieved CR/mCR with HMT tended to be superior to those without CR/mCR. HMT followed by alloHCT was a feasible and effective treatment strategy for patients with MDS.

Exosomes arise from viable cancer cells and may reflect a different biology than circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) shed from dying tissues. We compare exosome-derived DNA (exoDNA) to cfDNA in liquid ...biopsies of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).
Patient samples were obtained between 2003 and 2010, with clinically annotated follow up to 2015. Droplet digital PCR was performed on exoDNA and cfDNA for sensitive detection of KRAS mutants at codons 12/13. A cumulative series of 263 individuals were studied, including a discovery cohort of 142 individuals: 68 PDAC patients of all stages; 20 PDAC patients initially staged with localized disease, with blood drawn after resection for curative intent; and 54 age-matched healthy controls. A validation cohort of 121 individuals (39 cancer patients and 82 healthy controls) was studied to validate KRAS detection rates in early-stage PDAC patients. Primary outcome was circulating KRAS status as detected by droplet digital PCR. Secondary outcomes were disease-free and overall survival.
KRAS mutations in exoDNA, were identified in 7.4%, 66.7%, 80%, and 85% of age-matched controls, localized, locally advanced, and metastatic PDAC patients, respectively. Comparatively, mutant KRAS cfDNA was detected in 14.8%, 45.5%, 30.8%, and 57.9% of these individuals. Higher exoKRAS MAFs were associated with decreased disease-free survival in patients with localized disease. In the validation cohort, mutant KRAS exoDNA was detected in 43.6% of early-stage PDAC patients and 20% of healthy controls.
Exosomes are a distinct source of tumor DNA that may be complementary to other liquid biopsy DNA sources. A higher percentage of patients with localized PDAC exhibited detectable KRAS mutations in exoDNA than previously reported for cfDNA. A substantial minority of healthy samples demonstrated mutant KRAS in circulation, dictating careful consideration and application of liquid biopsy findings, which may limit its utility as a broad cancer-screening method.

AICA aneurysms are rare and a challenge to treat surgically. We present our experience of the angiographic results and the clinical outcomes for 9 AICA aneurysms treated by EVT.
Between 1997 and ...2009, EVT was attempted for 9 AICA aneurysms. Six patients presented with SAH, and 3 aneurysms were found incidentally. The location of the aneurysms was the proximal AICA in 7 and the distal AICA in 2. Five aneurysms originated from an AICA-PICA variant. Clinical outcomes and procedural complications were evaluated, and angiography was performed 6, 12, and 24 months after embolization to confirm recanalization of the coiled aneurysm.
EVT was technically successful in 7 patients (78%). Surgical trapping was performed in 1 patient after failure of EVT, and another aneurysm occluded spontaneously, along with the parent artery during EVT. In 7 patients, the AICAs had good patency on postoperative angiography. Stent-assisted coiling was performed in 3 patients. Follow-up angiographies were performed in 7 patients and showed no evidence of recanalization or progressive occlusion with further thrombosis except in 1 patient. There was no evidence of aneurysm rupture during the follow-up period, and 8 patients were able to perform all usual activities (mRS score, 0-1).
EVT may provide a feasible and safe option as an alternative, though a microsurgical option is initially considered for the management of AICA aneurysms. Further follow-up and more experience are also necessary.
Human kidney function is underpinned by approximately 1,000,000 nephrons, although the number varies substantially, and low nephron number is linked to disease. Human kidney development initiates ...around 4 weeks of gestation and ends around 34-37 weeks of gestation. Over this period, a reiterative inductive process establishes the nephron complement. Studies have provided insightful anatomic descriptions of human kidney development, but the limited histologic views are not readily accessible to a broad audience. In this first paper in a series providing comprehensive insight into human kidney formation, we examined human kidney development in 135 anonymously donated human kidney specimens. We documented kidney development at a macroscopic and cellular level through histologic analysis, RNA
hybridization, immunofluorescence studies, and transcriptional profiling, contrasting human development (4-23 weeks) with mouse development at selected stages (embryonic day 15.5 and postnatal day 2). The high-resolution histologic interactive atlas of human kidney organogenesis generated can be viewed at the GUDMAP database (www.gudmap.org) together with three-dimensional reconstructions of key components of the data herein. At the anatomic level, human and mouse kidney development differ in timing, scale, and global features such as lobe formation and progenitor niche organization. The data also highlight differences in molecular and cellular features, including the expression and cellular distribution of anchor gene markers used to identify key cell types in mouse kidney studies. These data will facilitate and inform
efforts to generate human kidney structures and comparative functional analyses across mammalian species.
The Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) experiment presents new limits on the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon cross section using data from an exposure of 3409 kg.d taken with ...low-background CsI(Tl) crystals at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The most stringent limit on the spin-dependent interaction for a pure proton case is obtained. The DAMA signal region for both spin-independent and spin-dependent interactions for the WIMP masses greater than 20 GeV/c2 is excluded by the single experiment with crystal scintillators.
