This meta-analysis examined which classroom management strategies and programs enhanced students' academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and motivational outcomes in primary education. The analysis ...included 54 random and nonrandom controlled intervention studies published in the past decade (2003–2013). Results showed small but significant effects (average g = 0.22) on all outcomes, except for motivational outcomes. Programs were coded for the presence/absence of four categories of strategies: focusing on the teacher, on student behavior, on students' social-emotional development, and on teacher–student relationships. Focusing on the students' social-emotional development appeared to have the largest contribution to the interventions' effectiveness, in particular on the social-emotional outcomes. Moreover, we found a tentative result that students' academic outcomes benefitted from teacher-focused programs.

The aims of the present study were (1) to identify to what extent school motivation and school commitment contributed to the explanation of students’ academic achievement in addition to the effect of ...students’ cognitive capacities, (2) to find out whether school commitment mediated the relation between school motivation and academic achievement, and (3) to find out whether school motivation mediated the relation between school commitment and academic achievement. New in the field is that perspectives from two different research traditions were adopted, resulting in a selection of variables introduced by identity development theory and by motivational theories on achievement goals. The overall goal was to provide insight in the underlying structure of the relationships among these variables by providing new empirical evidence derived from a large student sample. A sample of more than 6,000 secondary school students from the Netherlands was therefore used in the study. Path models (structural equation models) were used to analyse the data. Fit indices of the final model were satisfactory. This model included students’ cognitive capacities, three motivation factors (performance, social, and extrinsic motivation; mastery was excluded) and one commitment component (in-depth exploration; the ‘commitment’ and ‘reconsideration of commitment’ components were excluded). The results showed small effects of performance (+), social (+), and extrinsic (-) motivation on academic achievement in addition to students’ cognitive capacities. A very small negative effect was found for in-depth exploration. In-depth exploration mediated the motivation – achievement relationships to a limited extent. Suggestions for further research are discussed.
In this exploratory study, we evaluated which factors are predictive of technology-supported teaching, conceptualised as Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) competences and related ...professional development needs, and teachers' mental health in terms of job satisfaction, work-life balance, and teacher stress during COVID-19's first period of emergency remote teaching (ERT). In spring 2020, an online questionnaire was administered to gauge factors relevant to (1) shifting to ERT, (2) teachers' well-being, and (3) teacher characteristics. Data from 309 Dutch teachers across educational sectors were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling in two models. We further explored the results of the model predicting technology-supporting teaching as this showed the most optimal fit. Our analyses show that factors from all three categories contributed to technology-supported teaching during the first educational lockdown, but that competence-related aspects were the strongest predictors. Our results offer directions to strengthen the teaching context to support teachers navigating challenging ERT-periods.

Student mental health is a relevant aspect of the current academic context due to concerns regarding escalating mental health issues and because of an increasingly holistic perspective on education, ...learning, and personal development. This research investigates the perceptions of teachers in higher education regarding their roles in promoting student mental health, explicitly focusing on teachers who hold a tutor position. After following a strict procedure, the Mentor-Q questionnaire was designed to measure respondents’ perceptions of their role. This questionnaire was administered online to all Dutch University of Applied Sciences teachers for the study; 180 teachers finished it. Results were discussed and validated using a member check (n = 10). Exploratory factor analysis identified four role perceptions: connector, awareness raiser, referrer, and guardian. While all teachers endorsed these roles, the three clusters that appeared in a latent class analysis varied in their agreement levels. No background variables were significantly related to the role perception profiles. It seems that supporting teachers in recognizing and maintaining boundaries in their role in student mental health is crucial. This study highlights the complexity of the teacher’s role in supporting the student’s mental health and has implications for aligning their responsibilities with higher education goals.
The purpose of this research was to explore gender differences and cultural differences in school motivation among students from eight culturally diverse groups from Western and non-Western ...societies. The selected groups come from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, the Netherlands, and Qatar. More than 10,000 secondary school students reported their mastery, performance, social, and extrinsic motivation. Results showed (very) small to moderately large gender differences, which were largely in line with prior research in Western societies. Moreover, significant differences in school motivation across the eight cultural groups were found, however, only the Qatari sample strongly deviated from the other samples. In all cultural groups, females had slightly higher scores on mastery motivation and social motivation (except for Qatari students), and in several Western and non-Western samples, males had slightly higher scores on performance motivation. Gender differences in extrinsic motivation were less straightforward.

Student counselors and tutors guide students' choices of study profiles (subjects) within Dutch secondary education. This study addressed three research questions: (1) According to counselors and ...tutors, what factors should inform students' study profile choices? (2) Into what types can the views of counselors and tutors be classified? (3) According to counselors and tutors, which factors should secondary school students consider when choosing their study profiles in a forced- choice situation? Interviews held with 70 tutors and counselors identified students' interests, abilities, and future-oriented considerations as most important (RQ1). Six types of views were identified in which one, two, or all of the above-mentioned factors were regarded the most important by the participants (RQ2). Responses to the forced-choice situations largely confirmed different perspectives on the factors: the majority of participants perceived students' interests very important (RQ3).

Recent Dutch studies show that more than half of students in higher education experiences emotional and psychological complaints to a greater or lesser extent and that a wide majority of students ...indicate that they often or very often experience stress as a result of the study and experienced pressure to perform. The corona crisis also has a lot of extra stress for many students taken care of. High stress levels and high pressure and urgency to perform are seen as important explanations for lower well-being of students in higher education. Students struggle with stress and fears, and this has consequences for their study success, among other things. student well-being is defined as a sustained positive mental state in combination with a absence of psychological complaints and is influenced by factors within and outside the study. Higher education institutions and courses do not influence all these factors, but can offer students support through policy and measures. The question is whether this support is mainly aimed at symptom control, or at prevention and on culture change towards less emphasis on the nominally studying “model student”. In a social context in which there is an active pursuit of diversity and inclusion in higher education education, it is important that students who do not resemble that model student also feel connected to the training and feel the space to ask for support. This overview study focuses on the question of what higher education institutions can do do to promote the mental well-being of students and how and when a differentiated approach is helpful. The basic premise is that the overview study produces sound knowledge that is more or less directly applicable for educational practice and policy in higher education institutions and courses.
Recente Nederlandse studies tonen aan dat meer dan de helft van de studenten in het hoger onderwijs in meer of mindere mate emotionele en psychische klachten ervaart en dat een ruime meerderheid van de studenten aangeeft vaak of heel vaak stress te ervaren door de studie en ervaren prestatiedruk. Ook de coronacrisis heeft bij veel studenten voor veel extra stress gezorgd. Hoge stressniveaus en hoge prestatiedruk en –drang worden gezien als belangrijke verklaringen voor lager welzijn van studenten in het hoger onderwijs. Studenten kampen met stress en angsten en dit heeft onder andere gevolgen voor hun studiesucces. Studentenwelzijn wordt gedefinieerd als een duurzame positieve psychische gesteldheid in combinatie met een afwezigheid van psychische klachten en wordt beïnvloed door factoren binnen en buiten de studie. Hoger onderwijsinstellingen en -opleidingen hebben niet op al deze factoren invloed, maar kunnen studenten door beleid en maatregelen wel ondersteuning bieden. De vraag is of deze ondersteuning vooral gericht is op symptoombestrijding, of op preventie en op cultuurverandering naar minder nadruk op de nominaal studerende “modelstudent”. In een maatschappelijke context waarin actief wordt gestreefd naar diversiteit en inclusie in het hoger onderwijs, is het van belang dat ook studenten die niet op die modelstudent lijken, zich verbonden voelen met de opleiding en de ruimte voelen om ondersteuning te vragen. In deze overzichtsstudie staat de vraag centraal wat hoger onderwijsinstellingen kunnen doen om het mentaal welzijn van studenten te bevorderen en hoe en wanneer een gedifferentieerde aanpak daarbij behulpzaam is. Het uitgangspunt is dat de overzichtsstudie degelijke kennis oplevert die min of meer direct toepasbaar voor onderwijspraktijk en –beleid in hoger onderwijsinstellingen en -opleidingen.
Little is known about the determinants of teachers' psychological wellbeing, job satisfaction, occupational self-concept and quitting intentions. In this paper, teachers' occupational attributes ...(i.e. professional and personal characteristics) were investigated as determinants. Henceforth, the Educator Motivation and Attribute Profile (EdMAP) scales were used to describe the nature of 1109 Hong Kong primary and secondary school teachers' occupational attributes. Furthermore, the relationships with the teacher outcomes were investigated. Construct validity and reliabilities of the EdMAP scales were satisfactory. The results showed positive associations between teachers’ occupational attributes and their wellbeing, job satisfaction, and self-concept, and negative associations with quitting intentions.
