Kawasaki Disease (KD) is the most common cause of acquired heart disease in children in developed nations. The KD etiologic agent is unknown but likely to be a ubiquitous microbe that usually causes ...asymptomatic childhood infection, resulting in KD only in genetically susceptible individuals. KD synthetic antibodies made from prevalent IgA gene sequences in KD arterial tissue detect intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (ICI) resembling viral ICI in acute KD but not control infant ciliated bronchial epithelium. The prevalence of ICI in late-stage KD fatalities and in older individuals with non-KD illness should be low, unless persistent infection is common.
Lung tissue from late-stage KD fatalities and non-infant controls was examined by light microscopy for the presence of ICI. Nucleic acid stains and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed on tissues that were strongly positive for ICI. ICI were present in ciliated bronchial epithelium in 6/7 (86%) late-stage KD fatalities and 7/27 (26%) controls ages 9-84 years (p = 0.01). Nucleic acid stains revealed RNA but not DNA within the ICI. ICI were also identified in lung macrophages in some KD cases. TEM of bronchial epithelium and macrophages from KD cases revealed finely granular homogeneous ICI.
These findings are consistent with a previously unidentified, ubiquitous RNA virus that forms ICI and can result in persistent infection in bronchial epithelium and macrophages as the etiologic agent of KD.

Abstract This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the role of bisphosphonates in jaw osteomyelitis. 29 patients were included: 18 had been treated with bisphosphonates (12 with multiple myelomas, 3 ...with breast carcinomas, 2 with prostate carcinomas, and 1 with osteoporosis). Of 11 control patients, 2 had breast carcinomas, 2 had bronchial carcinomas, and 7 had no cancer. Descriptive and statistical evaluations were conducted to investigate the influence of chemotherapy, corticosteroids, stem cell transplantation, and bisphosphonates on the development and clinical picture of osteomyelitis. Both groups had similar disease histories, clinical pictures, treatment methods, and outcome. Wound dehiscence frequencies were also similar (Mann–Whitney rank sum test 1.66 ± 1.5 vs. 1.45 ± 2.0 p = 0.393). Chemotherapy, steroid therapy, stem cell transplantation, or bisphosphonate administration did not correlate with the clinical picture. Neither the duration of therapy nor the type of bisphosphonate influenced the clinical picture (negative Fisher's tests). The bisphosphonate group showed a characteristic settlement of Actinomyces in the exposed bone (positive Fisher's test, p = 0.021). These results suggested that osteomyelitis developed as a consequence of the simultaneous, cumulative action of many factors. Bisphosphonates played a role comparable to other predisposing features. Coating the jaws with bisphosphonates could promote the settlement of Actinomyces.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteremia is a leading global cause of infectious disease morbidity and mortality. Clinical data warehouses (CDWs) allow for the secure, real-time coupling of diverse data ...sources from real-world clinical settings, including care-based medical-administrative data and laboratory-based microbiological data. The main purpose of this study was to assess the contribution of CDWs in the epidemiological study of antibiotic resistance by constructing a database of bacteremia patients, BactHub, and describing their main clinico-microbiological features and outcomes.
Adult patients with bacteremia hospitalized between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2019 in 14 acute care university hospitals from the Greater Paris area were identified; their first bacteremia episode was included. Data describing patients, episodes of bacteremia, bacterial isolates, and antimicrobial resistance were structured.
Among 29,228 patients with bacteremia, 41% of episodes were community-onset (CO) and 59% were hospital-acquired (HA). Thirty-day and ninety-day mortality rates were 15% and 20% in CO episodes, and 18% and 36% in HA episodes. Overall resistance rates were high, including third-generation cephalosporin resistance among
(CO 21%, HA 37%) and
(CO 13%, HA 17%), and methicillin resistance among
(CO 11%, HA 14%). Annual incidence rates increased significantly from 2017 to 2019, from 20.0 to 20.9 to 22.1 stays with bacteremia per 1000 stays (p < 0.0001).
The Bacthub database provides accurate clinico-microbiological data describing bacteremia across France's largest hospital group. Data from Bacthub may inform surveillance and the clinical decision-making process for bacteremia patients, including choice of antimicrobial therapy. The database also offers opportunities for research, including analysis of hospital care pathways and significant patient outcomes such as mortality and recurrence of infection.
We report on the first axion search results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. An energy threshold of 2 keV for electron-recoil events ...allows a search for possible solar axion conversion into photons or local galactic axion conversion into electrons in the germanium crystal detectors. The solar axion search sets an upper limit on the Primakov coupling g(agammagamma) of 2.4x10(-9) GeV-1 at the 95% confidence level for an axion mass less than 0.1 keV/c2. This limit benefits from the first precise measurement of the absolute crystal plane orientations in this type of experiment. The galactic axion search analysis sets a world-leading experimental upper limit on the axioelectric coupling g(aee) of 1.4x10(-12) at the 90% confidence level for an axion mass of 2.5 keV/c2.
