Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis is one of the dysplasias of endochondral bone formation. We report a patient with this condition combined with lumbar spinal stenosis and intervertebral ...disc herniation. This coexistence has not been previously reported in the medical literature. The possible mechanisms of this clinical association is discussed.

The present study was designed to establish the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage in the treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts in children. A total of 14 cysts in eight ...patients were drained under aseptic conditions and continuous ultrasound guidance. An 18-G needle was used for puncture and silver nitrate solution as the scolecoidal agent. All procedures were successful. During follow-up, repeated ultrasound examinations revealed a progressive decrease in cyst size and an alteration in the cyst echopattern. None of the patients had a rise in hydatid antibody titer. There were no immediate or late complications. We conclude that the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage are satisfactory for the treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts in children.

The S-methyl thiosemicarbazone derivatives of 2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone and 2-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino-5-chlorobenzophenone (L^sup I^ and L^sup II^) and their copper(II) and palladium(II) ...chelates were synthesized. The solid compounds, Cu(L^sup I^)ClCl · 2H^sub 2^O, Cu(L^sup II^)ClCl · H^sub 2^O, Pd(L^sup I^)ClCl, and Pd(L^sup II^)Cl^sub 2^, were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric measurements, electronic, i.r., ^sup 1^H-n.m.r. and e.p.r. spectroscopy. The ligand behavior of the L^sup I^ and L^sup II^ explained by means of spectroscopic data. The experimental X-band e.p.r. spectra recorded from two different copper(II) ion coordinated powder complexes have characteristic line shapes that exhibit the axial symmetry around the paramagnetic ions. The theoretically well fitted spectra prove this case too. The absence of hyperfine signals has been attributed to the strong covalency effects of copper electrons with neighbouring N atoms. Orbital energy levels for magnetic electrons were determined from Spin Hamiltonian parameters. The anisotropic Lande splitting factors were specified in an order of (ProQuest: Formulae and/or non-USASCII text omitted; see image) and this case indicates that the unpaired electrons are located mainly in the (ProQuest: Formulae and/or non-USASCII text omitted; see image) orbital.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Abstract
Introduction – Since the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon (2009), sport has, for the first time, become a policy area of the European Union (EU).
Purpose – The aim of this chapter is ...to investigate the EU’s anti-discrimination policy for sports.
Methodology – Firstly, all the agreements, regulations, directives, and court decisions regarding nondiscrimination in sports will be reviewed. Secondly, discriminative examples in different sport branches will be investigated. In fact, this research will examine discrimination in both professional and amateur sports, including discrimination towards men, women, and LGBTIQ+ persons. Thirdly, the bodies, institutions, or persons who are accused of any kind of discrimination in sports will be researched, including fans, officials of clubs and federations, referees, players, and sports media. Finally, recommendations will be presented for the development of an improved sports policy that is capable of increasing diversity and equal participation in European sports.
Findings – For many underlying reasons, which the author will try to address in this chapter, there is a tendency to ignore discrimination in sports. Although the EU has passed legislation specifically designed to prohibit discrimination in sport, neither the legal arrangements nor their applications in Member States serve to end any kind of discrimination in the realm of sports. Thus, this chapter will attempt to raise awareness of this crucial and unending problem.
Starfish oocytes, eggs, and embryos are popular models for studying meiotic maturation, fertilization, and embryonic development. Their large (170- to 200-μm) oocytes are obtainable in copious ...amounts and are amenable to manipulations that mammalian oocytes are not. The most formidable obstacle to working with marine oocytes is their seasonal availability, yet a successful means of preserving them for use during the nonreproductive season has not been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of starfish oocytes to freezing with rapid and slow cooling rates under a variety of conditions to develop a cryopreservation protocol for these cells. Cryomicroscopic observation revealed that starfish oocytes in isotonic medium undergo intracellular ice formation (IIF) at very high subzero temperatures, such that the mean difference between the temperature of extracellular ice formation (TEIF) and IIF (TIIF) was less than 3°C and the average TIIF was approximately between −4 and −6°C. Neither partial cellular dehydration nor addition of the cryopreservative dimethyl sulfoxide significantly depressed the TIIF. Under some conditions, we observed ice nucleation at multiple locations within the cytoplasm, suggesting that several factors contribute to the unusually high TIIF during controlled-rate freezing and thus vitrification may be a more suitable method for cryopreserving these cells.

Treatment of nosocomial bacteraemia is usually governed by the surveillance results of the particular unit. Such results are especially important when antimicrobial resistance rates are high. ...Multiresistant isolates including Gram-negatives producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases have been frequently reported in tertiary care units in Turkey. In this study, antimicrobial susceptibilities of Gram-negative blood isolates (
n=348) were determined by microbroth dilution tests. The results showed carbapenems (meropenem and imipenem) to be uniformly more potent in vitro than any other drug against the
Enterobacteriaceae. Quinolone antibiotics were more active in vitro than aminoglycosides against a range of bacteria. Gram-negative bloodstream isolates were highly resistant to many antimicrobial agents in the hospital. In order to prevent hospital infection and antimicrobial resistance, surveillance of aetiological agents must be performed regularly.

Chronic lung infection with
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is primarily responsible for pulmonary deterioration of cystic fibrosis patients. The purpose of this study was to type the
P. aeruginosa isolates ...collected sequentially from cystic fibrosis patients, chronically colonized with
P. aeruginosa, by random amplified polymorphic DNA fingerprinting-PCR (RAPD-PCR). Sequential
P. aeruginosa isolates (n: 130) that had been collected from 20 CF patients over at least 9 years were investigated. The isolates were analyzed by RAPD-PCR using two arbitrary primers. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of all isolates was performed by the disc diffusion method. RAPD-PCR typing demonstrated that strains dissimilar in colony morphotype and of different antibiotic susceptibility patterns could be of the same genotype. Some CF patients were colonized with a rather constant
P. aeruginosa flora, with strains of different phenotypes but of one genotype. However, some patients may be colonized with more than one genotype. The results also demonstrated that there might be a risk of cross-colonization between CF patients followed-up at the same center.

The frequency of resistance to erythromycin of group A beta-haemolytic streptococci in the last 7 years was determined in three medical centres in Ankara. While all group A beta-haemolytic ...streptococci strains were susceptible to penicillin, a gradual increase in resistance to erythromycin until 1992 was observed. However, a substantial increase in erythromycin resistance occurred in 1993 when newer macrolides became available and were widely used in the latter part of 1992.
The data show that frequent testing for resistance to erythromycin of group A beta-haemolytic streptococci is required for the use of this antibiotic in our country.
