2,3-Dihydro-1H-imidazo1,2-abenzimidazole in acetic acid, and its N.sup.1-Me derivative in CHCl.sub.3, are brominated at position 6 with bromine. Less nucleophilic N.sup.9-R derivatives do not enter ...into the reaction under these conditions, but, like their N.sup.1-R isomers, they are quite effectively brominated by the KBrO.sub.3-HBr system, but at position 7, probably due to the transition of the reaction to the mode of bromination of protonated forms of substrates. N.sup.1- and N.sup.9-alkyl-6(7)-Br-2,3-dihydroimidazo1,2-abenzimidazoles can also be obtained by N-alkylation of 6(7)-Br-2,3-dihydroimidazo1,2-abenzimidazoles under neutral or basic conditions.

The structures of Schiff bases prepared by the condensation of 2-tosylaminobenzaldehyde with 2-alkylamino-5-nitroanilines were studied by X-ray diffraction. The intramolecular N-H…N hydrogen bonds ...result in the closure of six-membered hydrogen-bonded rings, which are either planar or nonplanar depending on the substituent. According to the results of quantum-chemical calculations, the distortion of the hydrogen-bonded ring is associated with the character of molecular packing in the crystal.
