The decay of the primordial isotopes 238U, 235U, 232Th, and 40K has contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence, the individual abundance of those isotopes are ...key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth models. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid‐Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18‐year observation time, and improvement in detector background levels mainly with an 8‐year nearly reactor‐free period, which now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. The KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High‐Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2σ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle.
Plain Language Summary
The energy to drive the Earth's engine comes from two different sources: primordial and radiogenic. Primordial energy comes from the added heat by collisions of accreting material and less so by the energy accompanying the sinking of metal to form the core. The radioactive decays of heat producing elements (i.e., potassium, thorium, and uranium) also generate energy and some of these decaying elements produce antineutrinos (geoneutrinos). Geoneutrino measurements provide the Earth's fuel gauge for its radiogenic power supply and insights into the planet's cooling history. The measurement accuracy of the KamLAND experiment has been improved by an 18‐year long‐term observation and a reduction of the significant background generated by commercial reactors. Consequently, modern geoneutrino measurements have entered an era of distinct spectroscopic contributions coming from uranium and thorium. The KamLAND result is consistent with compositional models for the bulk silicate Earth (the crust plus the mantle) predicting low to medium radiogenic heat (10–20 TW (1012 W)) and disfavor high concentration models (30 TW). This constraint sets the best limit on the permissible radiogenic energy budget in the Earth. Geoneutrino observations now begin to make significant contributions to the understanding of fundamental driving forces powering the Earth dynamic behavior.

Abstract We have established a method to measure picograms-per-gram (pg g−1) levels of 238U and 232Th in scintillation films by combining the dry ashing method and inductively coupled plasma mass ...spectrometry. Trace amounts of 238U and 232Th were measured in up to 2 g of scintillation film with almost 100% collection efficiency. This paper details the experimental procedure, including the pretreatment of the samples and labware, detection limit of the method, collection efficiencies of 238U and 232Th, and measurement of 238U and 232Th in a polyethylene naphthalate film. This method is also applicable to 238U and 232Th measurements in other low-background organic materials for rare-event search experiments.
Abstract
A new ultra-low background high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector has been installed at the Kamioka underground experimental site. The background count rate in the energy range from 40 keV to ...2700 keV is about 25% lower than that of the first HPGe detector installed in 2016, which has the same detector specification and similar shielding geometry. This paper describes the shielding configuration, including the cleaning of the material surface, the comparison of calibration data and simulation, the time variation of the background spectra, the sample measurement procedure, and some results of the radioactivity in the selected samples.
Large area joining between a substrate and a heat sink is desirable for high performance power modules. An intermetallic compounds (IMCs) pillar dispersed solder joint has been developed as a highly ...durable joint to achieve large area joining. The aim of this study is to clarify the generation and growth mechanism of the IMC pillar during soldering process. The structural characteristic of the IMC pillar was also examined by cross-sectional observation. The area ratio of the IMC pillars in the cross section of the joint increased with increasing the joining temperature. The shape of the IMC pillar became finer when the cooling rate was fast. In addition, the IMC pillar grew along the cooling direction.
The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay half-life in ^{136}Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search ...using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of ^{136}Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>2.3×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations.

Central serotonergic systems play an important role in regulating mood/emotion, cognition, sleep and wakefulness, appetite and locomotion and body temperature via multiple receptor subtypes. Among ...them, 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A/2C receptors have opposite effects with respect to certain functions. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT), a selective 5-HT1A receptor agonist, and 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI), a selective 5-HT2A/2C receptor agonist, on the performance of middle-aged rats in a two-lever choice reaction task that assessed attention and vigilance functions. We also examined the effects of aniracetam, a cognition enhancer, and its major metabolites on the induced performance impairments. 8-OH-DPAT (0.3 mg/kg s.c.) reduced response speed and choice accuracy and increased response omission with a reduction of task-associated motor activity without inducing motor inability or motivational changes. These findings indicate a specific disturbance of attentional and vigilance processes. DOI caused similar impairments at the highest dose tested (3 mg/kg s.c.); at a lower dose (1 mg/kg s.c.), however, it selectively attenuated the response speed, suggesting a selective attention deficit. (-)-Alprenolol, a non-selective 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, and ritanserin, a preferential 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, blocked the 8-OH-DPAT- and DOI-induced performance impairments respectively. Aniracetam ameliorated all the performance deficits, and the metabolites N-anisoyl-GABA and 2-pyrrolidinone partially mimicked the aniracetam effect in the 8-OHDPAT-induced attentional and vigilance impairments. Nefiracetam, another cognition enhancer, improved only the 8-OH-DPAT-induced impairments. Each compound tested alone had no effect on task performance. These results indicate that both serotonergic regulations, possibly via presynaptic 5-HT1A receptors and more likely via postsynaptic 5-HT2A receptors, lead similarly to attention deficits.

Tight junctions between adjacent epithelial cells control paracellular permeability of solutes and maintain cell polarity by fencing lipid bilayer components into ...demarcated apical and basolateral domains. In the present study we investigated the role of epidermal tight junctions in two skin physiological processes, ‘formation of the epidermal calcium ion (Ca2+) gradient’ and ‘polarized lamellar body secretion’. The former is based on the fact that the epidermal Ca2+ gradient is closely related to epidermal differentiation and the latter on the knowledge that polarized lamellar body secretion is essential to supply intercellular lipids to the stratum corneum. We hypothesized that tight junctions might form the Ca2+ gradient in the epidermis by sealing cell‐cell contact at the stratum granulosum and allow the lamellar bodies to be normally secreted toward the stratum corneum by giving granular cells polarity. In our experiments we discovered that tight junctions control not only both intercellular Ca2+ permeability and fluorescent ceramide analog (Cer‐FL) secretion in cultured normal human keratinocyte cells but also both intercellular calcium distribution and polarized lamellar body secretion in the skin equivalent. Thus, tight junctions should be responsible for linking a series of processes from epidermal differentiation to stratum corneum barrier formation. Our findings suggest that tight junctions should have a crucial role not only in epidermal barrier function but also in both epidermal differentiation and stratum corneum barrier function.

Cosmic-ray muons produce various radioisotopes when passing through material. These spallation products can be backgrounds for rare event searches such as in solar neutrino, double-β decay, and dark ...matter search experiments. The KamLAND-Zen experiment searches for neutrinoless double-β decay in 745 kg of xenon dissolved in liquid scintillator. The experiment includes dead-time-free electronics with a high efficiency for detecting muon-induced neutrons. The production yields of different radioisotopes are measured with a combination of delayed coincidence techniques, newly developed muon reconstruction, and xenon spallation identification methods. The observed xenon spallation products are consistent with results from the FLUKA and GEANT4 simulation codes.
