Retrieval studies document Ti‐6Al‐4V selective dissolution within crevices of total hip replacement devices. A gap persists in the fundamental understanding of Ti‐6Al‐4V crevice corrosion in vivo and ...its impact on local impedance. Previous studies use nearfield electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (nEIS) for characterization of retrieved CoCrMo surfaces and phase angle symmetry‐based EIS (sbEIS) for rapid data acquisition. In this study, these methods are combined with a deep neural network to characterize the local impedance changes after selective dissolution. It is hypothesized that structural changes occurring during dissolution will manifest as property changes to the oxide film capacitance. First, after sustained cathodic activation, the Ti‐6Al‐4V β phase selectively dissolves from the surface. Next, nEIS acquires n = 100 control and n = 105 dissolved spectra. Over dissolved regions, oxide capacitance significantly increases (Log10Q = ‐4.17 versus ‐4.78 (Scm−2(s)α), p = 0.000). Using single frequency EIS (5000 Hz), a capacitance‐based scanning impedance microscopy method identifies dissolved regions within seconds. Finally, Bode phase plots of the 205 control and dissolved nEIS spectra are input into a deep neural network. After training with n = 180 spectra, the model predicts the surface state for n = 25 previously unseen nEIS spectra with 96% accuracy.

Third, a neural network trained with nEIS spectra from dissolved and control regions predicts the correct surface state with 96% accuracy.

Abstract Background Despite considerable evolution in the quality of laboratory-based testing for detection of HCV, the availability of rapid, point-of-care tests may increase diagnoses by increasing ...opportunities for testing outside of traditional laboratory settings. Objectives We evaluated the performance of a new, rapid HCV test that can be used with venous blood, finger stick blood, serum, plasma, or oral fluid and compared it to FDA-approved laboratory methods. Study design HCV positive subjects as well as subjects at low risk for HCV were tested with the rapid test using all 5 specimen types and results compared to FDA-approved laboratory methods. In addition, performance was assessed in commercially available seroconversion panels. Results Sensitivity and specificity of the rapid test was equivalent to laboratory EIA and performance was comparable across all 5 specimen types. Conclusions The OraQuick® HCV Rapid Antibody Test appears suitable as an aid in the diagnosis of HCV infection.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in the clinic to improve patient care. While the successes illustrate AI's impact, few studies have led to improved clinical outcomes. In this review, we focus on ...how AI models implemented in nonorthopedic fields of corrosion science may apply to the study of orthopedic alloys. We first define and introduce fundamental AI concepts and models, as well as physiologically relevant corrosion damage modes. We then systematically review the corrosion/AI literature. Finally, we identify several AI models that may be implemented to study fretting, crevice, and pitting corrosion of titanium and cobalt chrome alloys.
The ability to confine and control light in three dimensions would have important implications for quantum optics and quantum-optical devices: the modification of black-body radiation, the ...localization of light to a fraction of a cubic wavelength, and thus the realization of single-mode light-emitting diodes, are but a few examples. Photonic crystals - the optical analogues of electronic crystal - provide a means for achieving these goals. Combinations of metallic and dielectric materials can be used to obtain the required three-dimensional periodic variations in dielectric constant, but dissipation due to free carrier absorption will limit application of such structures at the technologically useful infrared wavelengths. On the other hand, three-dimensional photonic crystals fabricated in low-loss gallium arsenide show only a weak 'stop band' (that is, range of frequencies at which propagation of light is forbidden) at the wavelengths of interest. Here we report the construction of a three-dimensional infrared photonic crystal on a silicon wafer using relatively standard microelectronics fabrication technology. Our crystal shows a large stop band (10-14.5 μm), strong attenuation of light within this band (∼12 dB per unit cell) and a spectral response uniform to better than 1 per cent over the area of the 6-inch wafer.

The introduction of numerous formulations of Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), which is widely used as a bearing material in orthopedic implants, necessitated screening of bearing ...couples to identify promising iterations for expensive joint simulations. Pin-on-disk (POD) testers capable of multidirectional sliding can correctly rank formulations of UHMWPE with respect to their predictive in vivo wear behavior. However, there are still uncertainties regarding POD test parameters for facilitating clinically relevant wear mechanisms of UHMWPE. Studies on the development of POD testing were briefly summarized. We systematically reviewed wear rate data of UHMWPE generated by POD testers. To determine if POD testing was capable of correctly ranking bearings and if test parameters outlined in ASTM F732 enabled differentiation between wear behavior of various formulations, mean wear rates of non-irradiated, conventional (25–50kGy) and highly crosslinked (≥90kGy) UHMWPE were grouped and compared. The mean wear rates of non-irradiated, conventional and highly crosslinked UHMWPEs were 7.03, 5.39 and 0.67mm3/MC. Based on studies that complied with the guidelines of ASTM F732, the mean wear rates of non-irradiated, conventional and highly crosslinked UHMWPEs were 0.32, 0.21 and 0.04mm3/km, respectively. In both sets of results, the mean wear rate of highly crosslinked UHMPWE was smaller than both conventional and non-irradiated UHMWPEs (p<0.05). Thus, POD testers can compare highly crosslinked and conventional UHMWPEs despite different test parameters. Narrowing the allowable range for standardized test parameters could improve sensitivity of multi-axial testers in correctly ranking materials.

Fully matured dental enamel is an architecturally and mechanically complex hydroxyapatite-based bioceramic devoid of most of the organic material that was essential in its making. Enamel formation is ...a staged process principally involving secretory and maturation stages, each associated with major changes in gene expression and cellular function. Cellular activities that define the maturation stage of amelogenesis include ion (e.g., calcium and phosphate) transport and storage, control of intracellular and extracellular pH (e.g., bicarbonate and hydrogen ion movements), and endocytosis. Recent studies on rodent amelogenesis have identified a multitude of gene products that appear to be linked to these cellular activities. This review describes the main cellular activities of these genes during the maturation stage of amelogenesis.

We report 3 mm continuum, CH3CN(5-4) and 13CS(2-1) line observations with CARMA (Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy), in conjunction with 6 and 1.3 cm continuum VLA data, and 12 ...and 25 m broadband data from the Subaru Telescope toward the massive proto-star IRAS 18566+0408. The VLA data resolve the ionized jet into four components aligned in the E-W direction. Radio components A, C, and D have flat centimeter SEDs indicative of optically thin emission from ionized gas, and component B has a spectral index = 1.0, and a decreasing size with frequency ∝ − 0.5 . Emission from the CARMA 3 mm continuum and from the 13CS(2-1) and CH3CN(5-4) spectral lines is compact (i.e., < 6700 au ) and peaks near the position of the VLA centimeter source, component B. Analysis of these lines indicates hot and dense molecular gas, which is typical for HMCs. Our Subaru telescope observations detect a single compact source, coincident with radio component B, demonstrating that most of the energy in IRAS 18566+0408 originates from a region of size < 2400 au . We also present UKIRT near-infrared archival data for IRAS 18566+0408, which show extended K-band emission along the jet direction. We detect an E-W velocity shift of about 10 km s−1 over the HMC in the CH3CN lines possibly tracing the interface of the ionized jet with the surrounding core gas. Our data demonstrate the presence of an ionized jet at the base of the molecular outflow and support the hypothesis that massive protostars with O-type luminosity form with a mechanism similar to lower mass stars.
