Despite her fame and cultural prominence as a Spanish dancer, Antonia Mercé La Argentina did not appear in major film projects, like many of her peers. In this article, we examine the recent ...discovery of footage of Mercé and contextualize these preserved fragments within the development of Western cinema and the presence of the Spanish imaginary in the film industry of the time. These visual sources reveal how Mercé negotiated between art and technology, stage and screen, economy and aesthetics in establishing her cultural position and resisting particular constructions of Spanishness.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV are major causes of worldwide disease. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a combined screening programme, which included a risk‐assessment questionnaire and rapid ...tests for point‐of‐care diagnosis, on screening and new diagnosis rates. This prospective, cluster randomized study was carried out in primary care. The intervention arm included a 4‐hour educational programme, the use of a risk‐assessment questionnaire and rapid tests. In the control centres, only the educational intervention was provided. The main variables compared were the screening coverage and the number and rate of new HCV and HIV diagnoses. Of a total of 7991 participants, 4670 (58.5%) and 2894 (36.2%) presented a risk questionnaire for HIV or HCV, respectively. The younger participants, men and those from Latin America and Eastern Europe, showed the greatest risk of presenting with a positive questionnaire. The overall screening coverage was higher within the intervention arm (OR 17.7; 95% CI 16.2‐19.5; P < .001). Only two HIV‐positives were identified compared to one in control centres. The rate of HCV diagnoses was higher among intervention centres, with 37 versus seven positive tests (OR 5.2; 95% CI 2.3‐11.6; P < .001). Of them, 10 were new diagnoses and 27 had been previously diagnosed, although not linked to care. In conclusion, a simple operational programme can lead to an increase in HCV and HIV screening rates, compared to an exclusively educational programme. The selection of at‐risk patients with a self‐questionnaire and the use of rapid tests significantly increased the diagnostic rate of HCV infection.

CRISPR/Cas9 technology offers novel approaches for the development of new therapies for many unmet clinical needs, including a significant number of inherited monogenic diseases. However, in vivo ...correction of disease-causing genes is still inefficient, especially for those diseases without selective advantage for corrected cells. We reasoned that substrate reduction therapies (SRT) targeting non-essential enzymes could provide an attractive alternative. Here we evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of an in vivo CRISPR/Cas9-mediated SRT to treat primary hyperoxaluria type I (PH1), a rare inborn dysfunction in glyoxylate metabolism that results in excessive hepatic oxalate production causing end-stage renal disease. A single systemic administration of an AAV8-CRISPR/Cas9 vector targeting glycolate oxidase, prevents oxalate overproduction and kidney damage, with no signs of toxicity in Agxt1
mice. Our results reveal that CRISPR/Cas9-mediated SRT represents a promising therapeutic option for PH1 that can be potentially applied to other metabolic diseases caused by the accumulation of toxic metabolites.
Both recessive and dominant genetic forms of Parkinson's disease have been described. The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of several genes to the pathophysiology of early onset ...Parkinson's disease in a cohort from central Spain.
We analyzed a cohort of 117 unrelated patients with early onset Parkinson's disease using a pipeline, based on a combination of a next-generation sequencing panel of 17 genes previously related with Parkinson's disease and other Parkinsonisms and CNV screening.
Twenty-six patients (22.22%) carried likely pathogenic variants in PARK2, LRRK2, PINK1, or GBA. The gene most frequently mutated was PARK2, and p.Asn52Metfs*29 was the most common variation in this gene. Pathogenic variants were not observed in genes SNCA, FBXO7, PARK7, HTRA2, DNAJC6, PLA2G6, and UCHL1. Co-occurrence of pathogenic variants involving two genes was observed in ATP13A2 and PARK2 genes, as well as LRRK2 and GIGYF2 genes.
Our results contribute to the understanding of the genetic architecture associated with early onset Parkinson's disease, showing both PARK2 and LRRK2 play an important role in Spanish Parkinson's disease patients. Rare variants in ATP13A2 and GIGYF2 may contribute to PD risk. However, a large proportion of genetic components remains unknown. This study might contribute to genetic diagnosis and counseling for families with early onset Parkinson's disease.

Sutures have been the standard flap closure method of choice following mandibular third molar surgery but can lead to some complications. Swelling, pain, trismus, healing, and PROMs were recorded post-operatively. These variables were analyzed by means of the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test, using SPSS statistical software version 28.0.0 (IBM® SPSS®, Chicago, IL, USA).
