Autonomy is required for manned spacecraft missions distant enough that light-time communication delays make ground-based mission control infeasible. Presently, ground controllers develop a complete ...schedule of power modes for all spacecraft components based on a large number of factors. The proposed architecture is an early attempt to formalize and automate this process using on-vehicle computation resources. In order to demonstrate this architecture, an autonomous electrical power system controller and vehicle Mission Manager are constructed. These two components are designed to work together in order to plan upcoming load use as well as respond to unanticipated deviations from the plan. The communication protocol was developed using "paper" simulations prior to formally encoding the messages and developing software to implement the required functionality. These software routines exchange data via TCP/IP sockets with the Mission Manager operating at NASA Ames Research Center and the autonomous power controller running at NASA Glenn Research Center. The interconnected systems are tested and shown to be effective at planning the operation of a simulated quasi-steady state spacecraft power system and responding to unexpected disturbances.
Many of the terms used in medical decision making are foreign to clinicians. This problem creates a barrier that can prevent physicians from acquiring these new clinical tools. This glossary contains ...definitions of the most common terms as well as examples of their usage by using Down syndrome as the illustrative condition.
Clinical teaching does not fit neatly into traditional teaching-learning models. The interaction between a resident and an attending physician is of particular interest because it has several ...functions including education, supervision, socialization, and quality control. The purpose of this study was to observe, classify, and record verbal teaching and learning behaviors in the resident-attending physician interaction. During a 12-month period, 125 observations of resident-attending physician interactions were recorded; the average length of the interactions was 4.27 minutes. The six most frequent resident verbal behaviors compared by postgraduate year level did not vary significantly. Only one of the six most frequent attending physician verbal behaviors varied significantly. In the average interaction of about 4 minutes, three fourths of the interaction was on patient care issues, leaving little time for teaching. There are many unanswered questions about the resident-attending physician interaction and its contribution to the training of a physician.

The effect of treatment with astemizole for three weeks on weight was assessed in 44 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis who participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled ...clinical trial. Astemizole 10-mg tablets and identical placebo tablets were used. Compared with baseline, weight increased significantly in astemizole-treated patients (1.07 +/- 1.39 kg; p = 0.0004); however, the mean change in weight in astemizole-treated patients was not statistically significantly different than that seen in placebo-treated patients (0.85 +/- 1.68 kg). No relationship was found between changes in weight and age, sex, initial weight, percentage of obesity, and plasma astemizole concentrations.
We present the first scattered light detections of the HD 106906 debris disk using Gemini/GPI in the infrared and HST/ACS in the optical. HD 106906 is a 13 Myr old F5V star in the Sco-Cen ...association, with a previously detected planet-mass candidate HD 106906b projected 650 AU from the host star. Our observations reveal a near edge-on debris disk that has a central cleared region with radius \(\sim\)50 AU, and an outer extent \(>\)500 AU. The HST data show the outer regions are highly asymmetric, resembling the ''needle'' morphology seen for the HD 15115 debris disk. The planet candidate is oriented \(\sim\)21\(\deg\) away from the position angle of the primary's debris disk, strongly suggesting non-coplanarity with the system. We hypothesize that HD 106906b could be dynamically involved in the perturbation of the primary's disk, and investigate whether or not there is evidence for a circumplanetary dust disk or cloud that is either primordial or captured from the primary. We show that both the existing optical properties and near-infrared colors of HD 106906b are weakly consistent with this possibility, motivating future work to test for the observational signatures of dust surrounding the planet.
The Northern Appalachian/Acadian ecoregion in northeastern United States and southeastern Canada is projected to experience dramatically increased temperatures by the end of the twenty-first century, ...potentially driving numerous changes in species distributions throughout the region. For species to respond to such changes, landscape-scale conservation planning must result in increased levels of connectivity both within the ecoregion and with neighboring areas. Numerous initiatives have sought to promote ecological health and connectivity throughout all or a part of this ecoregion, particularly Two Countries, One Forest, a binational umbrella organization. Work in the region suggests the need for increased attention to be given to planning for linkages across landscape scales to allow for both short- and long-term movement of species, and for coupling connectivity with efforts to enhance ecosystem resilience throughout the reserve system and the surrounding matrix.
We present observations of the debris disk around gamma Doradus, an F1V star, from the Herschel Key Programme DEBRIS (Disc Emission via Bias-free Reconnaissance in the Infrared/Submillimetre). The ...disk is well-resolved at 70, 100 and 160 micron, resolved along its major axis at 250 micron, detected but not resolved at 350 micron, and confused with a background source at 500 micron. It is one of our best resolved targets and we find it to have a radially broad dust distribution. The modelling of the resolved images cannot distinguish between two configurations: an arrangement of a warm inner ring at several AU (best-fit 4 AU) and a cool outer belt extending from ~55 to 400 AU or an arrangement of two cool, narrow rings at ~70 AU and ~190 AU. This suggests that any configuration between these two is also possible. Both models have a total fractional luminosity of ~10^{-5} and are consistent with the disk being aligned with the stellar equator. The inner edge of either possible configuration suggests that the most likely region to find planets in this system would be within ~55 AU of the star. A transient event is not needed to explain the warm dust's fractional luminosity.
