Synthesis of nanoporous alumina monoliths with controlled morphology and density is a challenge. Here, we demonstrate mechanically robust alumina monoliths synthesized by conformal overcoating of ...graphitic nanoligaments of low-density carbon-nanotube-based aerogels (CNT-CAs) by using atomic layer deposition. Young’s modulus of resultant monoliths increases superlinearly with the monolith density with an exponent of ∼2.4, defined by the morphology and connectivity of the CNT-CA scaffold. As a result, for a given monolith density, alumina-carbon composites have moduli comparable to those of CNT-CAs and significantly superior to those of pure alumina aerogels reported previously.

We present constraints on weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP)-nucleus scattering from the 2013 data of the Large Underground Xenon dark matter experiment, including 1.4×10^{4} kg day of ...search exposure. This new analysis incorporates several advances: single-photon calibration at the scintillation wavelength, improved event-reconstruction algorithms, a revised background model including events originating on the detector walls in an enlarged fiducial volume, and new calibrations from decays of an injected tritium β source and from kinematically constrained nuclear recoils down to 1.1 keV. Sensitivity, especially to low-mass WIMPs, is enhanced compared to our previous results which modeled the signal only above a 3 keV minimum energy. Under standard dark matter halo assumptions and in the mass range above 4 GeV c^{-2}, these new results give the most stringent direct limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section. The 90% C.L. upper limit has a minimum of 0.6 zb at 33 GeV c^{-2} WIMP mass.

There have been active efforts in the U.S., Europe, and Japan on the design of a neutrino factory. This type of facility produces intense beams of neutrinos from the decay of muons in a high-energy ...storage ring. In the U.S., a second detailed feasibility study (FS2) for a neutrino factory was completed in 2001. Since that report was published, new ideas in bunching, cooling, and acceleration of muon beams have been developed. We have incorporated these ideas into a new facility design, which we designate as study 2B (ST2B), that should lead to significant cost savings over the FS2 design.

Fetal programming is established early in life, likely through epigenetic mechanisms that control gene expression. Micronutrients can act as epigenetic modifiers (EM) by modulating the genome through ...mechanisms that include DNA methylation and post-translational modification of chromatin. Among the EM, methionine, choline, folate, and vitamin B12 have been suggested as key players of DNA methylation. However, the effects of supplementing these four EM, involved in the methionine folate cycle on DNA methylation, are still under investigation. This manuscript provides the genome-wide DNA methylation dataset (GSE180362) of bovine embryonic fibroblast cells exposed to different supplementation levels of glucose and methionine, choline, folate, and vitamin B12 (collectively named as Epigenetic Modifiers - EM). The DNA methylation was measured using MSP-I digestion and Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing. Bioinformatics analyses included data quality control, read mapping, methylation calling, and differential methylation analyses. Supplementary file S1 and data analysis codes are within this article. To our knowledge, this is the first dataset investigating the effects of four EM in bovine embryonic fibroblast DNA methylation profiles. Furthermore, this data and its findings provide information on putative candidate genes responsive to DNA methylation due to EM supplementation.

A decade of continuous glatiramer acetate (GA) use by relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients was evaluated in this ongoing, prospective study, and the neurological status of ...‘Withdrawn’ patients was assessed at a 10-year long-term follow-up (LTFU) visit. Modified intention-to-treat (mITT, n=232) patients received ≥ 1 GA dose since 1991; ‘Ongoing’ patients (n=108) continued in November 2003. Of 124 patients, 50 Withdrawn patients returned for LTFU. Patients were evaluated every six months (EDSS). Mean GA exposure was 6.99, 10.1 and 4.26 years for mITT, Ongoing, and Withdrawn/LTFU patients, respectively. While on GA, mITT relapse rates declined from 1.18/year prestudy to ∼1 relapse/5 years; median time to ≥ 1 EDSS point increase was 8.8 years; mean EDSS change was 0.739±1.66 points; 58% had stable/improved EDSS scores; and 24, 11 and 3% reached EDSS 4, 6 and 8, respectively. For Ongoing patients, EDSS increased 0.509±1.65; 62% were stable/improved; and 24, 8 and 1% reached EDSS 4, 6 and 8, respectively. For Withdrawn patients at 10-year LTFU, EDSS increased 2.249±1.86; 28% were stable/improved; and 68, 50 and 10% reached EDSS 4, 6 and 8, respectively. While on GA nearly all patients (mean disease duration 15 years) remained ambulatory. At LTFU, Withdrawn patients had greater disability than Ongoing patients.

Evaluating ship layout for human factors (HF) issues using simulation software such as maritimeEXODUS can be a long and complex process. The analysis requires the identification of relevant ...evaluation scenarios; encompassing evacuation and normal operations; the development of appropriate measures which can be used to gauge the performance of crew and vessel and finally; the interpretation of considerable simulation data. Currently, the only agreed guidelines for evaluating HFs performance of ship design relate to evacuation and so conclusions drawn concerning the overall suitability of a ship design by one naval architect can be quite different from those of another. The complexity of the task grows as the size and complexity of the vessel increases and as the number and type of evaluation scenarios considered increases. Equally, it can be extremely difficult for fleet operators to set HFs design objectives for new vessel concepts. The challenge for naval architects is to develop a procedure that allows both accurate and rapid assessment of HFs issues associated with vessel layout and crew operating procedures. In this paper we present a systematic and transparent methodology for assessing the HF performance of ship design which is both discriminating and diagnostic. The methodology is demonstrated using two variants of a hypothetical naval ship.
