Dry deposition is an important loss process for atmospheric particles and can be a significant part of total deposition estimates calculated for critical loads analyses. However, algorithms used in ...large-scale air quality and atmospheric chemistry models to predict particle deposition velocity as a function of particle size are highly uncertain. Many of these algorithms, although derived from a common heritage, predict vastly different particle deposition velocities for a given particle diameter even under identical environmental conditions for major land use classes. Even more problematic, for vegetated landscapes (forests, in particular) the algorithms do not agree very well with available measurements. In this work, we perform a sensitivity study to estimate how significant the uncertainties in particle deposition algorithms may be in an air quality model's predictions of ground-level fine particle concentrations, particle deposition and overall total deposition of nitrogen and sulfur. Our results suggest that fine particle concentration predictions at the surface may vary by 5-15% depending on the choice of particle deposition velocity algorithm, while particle dry deposition is affected to a much greater extent with differences among algorithms >200%. Moreover, if accumulation mode particle dry deposition measurements over forests are correct, then dry particle deposition and total elemental deposition to these landscapes may be much larger than is typically simulated by current air quality and atmospheric chemistry models, calling into question commonly available estimates of total deposition and their use in critical loads analyses. Since accurate predictions of atmospheric particle concentrations and deposition are critically important for future air quality, weather and climate models and management of pollutant deposition to sensitive ecosystems, an investment in new dry deposition measurements in conjunction with integrated modelling efforts seems not only justified but vitally necessary to advance and improve the treatment of particle dry deposition processes in atmospheric models.
Urbanized coral reefs experience anthropogenic disturbances caused by coastal development, pollution, and nutrient runoff, resulting in turbid, marginal conditions in which only certain species can ...persist. Mortality effects are exacerbated by increasingly regular thermal stress events, leading to shifts towards novel communities dominated by habitat generalists and species with low structural complexity.
There is limited data on the turnover processes that occur due to this convergence of anthropogenic stressors, and how novel urban ecosystems are structured both at the community and functional levels. As such, it is unclear how they will respond to future disturbance events.
Here, we examine the patterns of coral reef community change and determine whether ecosystem functions provided by specialist species are lost post‐disturbance. We present a comparison of community and functional trait‐based changes for scleractinian coral genera and reef fish species assemblages subject to coastal development, coastal modification, and mass bleaching between two time periods, 1975–1976 and 2018, in Nakagusuku Bay, Okinawa, Japan.
We observed an increase in fish habitat generalists, a dominance shift from branching to massive/sub‐massive corals and increasing site‐based coral genera richness between years. Fish and coral communities significantly reassembled, but functional trait‐based multivariate space remained constant, indicating a turnover of species with similar traits. A compression of coral habitat occurred, with shallow (<5 m) and deep (>8 m) coral genera shifting towards the mid‐depths (5–8 m).
We show that although reef species assemblages altered post disturbance, new communities retained similar ecosystem functions. This result could be linked to the stressors experienced by urban reefs, which reflect those that will occur at an increasing frequency globally in the near future. Yet, even after shifts to disturbed communities, these fully functioning reef systems may maintain high conservation value.
Our study compared coral and fish communities between 1975 and 2018, in Nakagusuku Bay, Okinawa, Japan. Over 43 years of urbanization and thermal stress, coral and fish assemblages changed significantly, but functional trait space was conserved, with both taxa experiencing even turnovers across space. We observed a shift in dominant coral morphology from branching to massive, and a “depth compression” of corals, with the average depths of deep and shallow coral genera compressing towards the mid‐depths.

Intramembranous bone regeneration plays an important role in fixation of intramedullary implants used in joint replacement and dental implants used in tooth replacement. Despite widespread ...recognition of the importance of intramembranous bone regeneration in these clinical procedures, the underlying mechanisms have not been well explored. A previous study that examined transcriptomic profiles of regenerating bone from the marrow space showed that increased periostin gene expression preceded increases in several osteogenic genes. We therefore sought to determine the role of cells transiently expressing periostin in intramedullary intramembranous bone regeneration. We used a genetic mouse model that allows tamoxifen-inducible fluorescent labeling of periostin expressing cells. These mice underwent ablation of the bone marrow cavity through surgical disruption, a well-established intramembranous bone regeneration model. We found that in intact bones, fluorescently labeled cells were largely restricted to the periosteal surface of cortical bone and were absent in bone marrow. However, following surgical disruption of the bone marrow cavity, cells transiently expressing periostin were found within the regenerating tissue of the bone marrow compartment even though the cortical bone remained intact. The source of these cells is likely heterogenous, including cells occupying the periosteal surface as well as pericytes and endothelial cells within the marrow cavity. We also found that diphtheria toxin-mediated depletion of cells transiently expressing periostin at the time of surgery impaired intramembranous bone regeneration in mice. These data suggest a critical role of periostin expressing cells in intramedullary intramembranous bone regeneration and may lead to novel therapeutic interventions to accelerate or enhance implant fixation.

Soil bulk electrical conductivity (BEC) was evaluated alongside soil volumetric water content (VWC) and soil temperature measurements using the HydraProbe (model HydraProbe, Stevens Water Monitoring ...Systems, Inc.) (hereafter called HP) with accuracy range of BEC ≤ 0.3 S m−1, and the time domain reflectometry (TDR)‐315L Probe (model TDR‐315L, Acclima, Inc.) (hereafter called AP) suitable for BEC up to 0.6 S m−1, at 23 stations of the U.S. Climate Reference Network. Previous evaluations revealed inconsistent performance of both sensors in some clay soils using manufacturer‐recommended calibrations in converting dielectric permittivity measurements to VWC. Here, we found that hourly values of BEC reached 0.6 S m−1 in high clay content soils and exceeded 2 S m−1 in high saline soils, and these high values of BEC were associated with poor performance and failures of both HP and AP sensors. Large values of BEC occurred in predominantly saturated soils where VWC values reached about 0.5 m3 m−3 for saline soils and about 0.7 m3 m−3 for clay soils, while low magnitudes of BEC were associated with low soil water content and seldomly saturated soils. Low hourly BEC values of less than 0.1 S m−1 were observed in wide variety of soil types, where sensor performance was typically excellent. The most influential factor on BEC was high soil water content conditions. Although dielectric permittivity measurements in estimating the soil water content were sensitive to BEC as some high clay content and high salinity soils increased BEC, the impact of large BEC on dielectric permittivity measurements was smaller in the well‐drained top soil layers than in deep soil layers that remained near saturation. Soil temperature had only a small impact on BEC. With high clay content and high salinity, the specific area of clay minerals was also associated with the magnitude of BEC.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was investigated as a flame retardant (FR) additive for melt-compounded formulations with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and compared to LDPE compounded with melamine ...polyphosphate (MPP), one of the industry standard intumescent FR additives for plastics. DNA showed a much greater compatibility with the LDPE matrix than MPP. At high loading levels, DNA showed minimal increases in compounding torque, while MPP increased torque by over 20%. Qualitative evaluation using SEM and EDS showed that DNA/LDPE blends had significantly improved cross-sectional morphology, with fewer microaggregates and improved particle dispersion than MPP/LDPE. Horizontal burn testing showed that DNA markedly reduced flame burn distances in LDPE above loading levels of 5% w/w. Biochemical characterization of heat-treated DNA revealed that DNA undergoes denaturation, fragmentation, and oxidation during compounding, but these processes did not appear to have an effect on its FR properties. This study expands the field of DNA-based FR beyond specialty substrates, and establishes DNA as a viable green FR additive for commodity polymer applications.

The circadian clock system regulates multiple metabolic processes, including bone metabolism. Previous studies have demonstrated that both central and peripheral circadian signaling regulate skeletal ...growth and homeostasis in mice. Disruption in central circadian rhythms has been associated with a decline in bone mineral density in humans and the global and osteoblast-specific disruption of clock genes in bone tissue leads to lower bone mass in mice. Gut physiology is highly sensitive to circadian disruption. Since the gut is also known to affect bone remodeling, we sought to test the hypothesis that circadian signaling disruption in colon epithelial cells affects bone. We therefore assessed structural, functional, and cellular properties of bone in 8 week old Ts4-Cre and Ts4-Cre;Bmal1fl/fl (cBmalKO) mice, where the clock gene Bmal1 is deleted in colon epithelial cells. Axial and appendicular trabecular bone volume was significantly lower in cBmalKO compared to Ts4-Cre 8-week old mice in a sex-dependent fashion, with male but not female mice showing the phenotype. Similarly, the whole bone mechanical properties were deteriorated in cBmalKO male mice. The tissue level mechanisms involved suppressed bone formation with normal resorption, as evidenced by serum markers and dynamic histomorphometry. Our studies demonstrate that colon epithelial cell-specific deletion of Bmal1 leads to failure to acquire trabecular and cortical bone in male mice.

Addition of up to 15.0 g/d salt to the diet of chimpanzees caused large rises in blood pressure, which reversed when the added salt was removed. Effects of more modest alterations to sodium intakes ...in chimpanzees, akin to current efforts to lower sodium intakes in the human population, are unknown.
Sodium intakes were altered among 17 chimpanzees in Franceville, Gabon, and 110 chimpanzees in Bastrop, Tex. In Gabon, chimpanzees had a biscuit diet of constant nutrient composition except that the sodium content was changed episodically over 3 years from 75 to 35 to 120 mmol/d. In Bastrop, animals were divided into 2 groups; 1 group continued on the standard diet of 250 mmol/d sodium for 2 years, and sodium intake was halved for the other group. Lower sodium intake was associated with lower systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures in Gabon (2-tailed P<0.001, unadjusted and adjusted for age, sex, and baseline weight) and Bastrop (P<0.01, unadjusted; P=0.08 to 0.10, adjusted), with no threshold down to 35 mmol/d sodium. For systolic pressure, estimates were -12.7 mm Hg (95% confidence interval, -16.9 to -8.5, adjusted) per 100 mmol/d lower sodium in Gabon and -10.9 mm Hg (95% confidence interval, -18.9 to -2.9, unadjusted) and -5.7 mm Hg (95% confidence interval, -12.2 to 0.7, adjusted) for sodium intake lower by 122 mmol/d in Bastrop. Baseline systolic pressures higher by 10 mm Hg were associated with larger falls in systolic pressure by 4.3/2.9 mm Hg in Gabon/Bastrop per 100 mmol/d lower sodium.
These findings from an essentially single-variable experiment in the species closest to Homo sapiens with high intakes of calcium and potassium support intensified public health efforts to lower sodium intake in the human population.
Tumor protein 53 (p53) is a critical regulator of cell cycle and apoptosis that is frequently disabled in human tumors. In many tumor types, p53 is deleted or mutated, but in others p53 is ...inactivated by overexpression or amplification of its negative regulator mouse double minute 2 (MDM2). A high-throughput screening effort identified 6,7-bis(4-bromophenyl)-7,12-dihydro-6H-chromeno4,3-d1,2,4triazolo1,5-apyrimidine as a potent inhibitor of the MDM2−p53 protein−protein interaction. This screening hit was found to be chemically unstable and difficult to handle due to poor DMSO solubility. Co-crystallization with the target protein helped to direct further optimization and provided a tractable lead series of novel MDM2−p53 inhibitors. In cellular assays, these compounds were shown to upregulate p53 protein levels and p53 signaling and to cause p53-dependent inhibition of proliferation and apoptosis.
The current aging population of captive chimpanzees is expected to develop age-related diseases and present new challenges to providing their veterinary care. Spontaneous heart disease and sudden ...cardiac death are the main causes of death in chimpanzees (especially of male animals),
but little is known about the relative frequency of other chronic diseases. Furthermore, female chimpanzees appear to outlive the males and scant literature addresses clinical conditions that affect female chimpanzees. Here we characterize the types and prevalence of chronic disease seen in
geriatric (older than 35 y) female chimpanzees in the colony at Alamogordo Primate Facility. Of the 16 female chimpanzees that fit the age category, 87.5% had some form of chronic age-related disease. Cardiovascular-related disease was the most common (81.25%) followed by metabolic syndrome
(43.75%) and renal disease (31.25%). These data show the incidence of disease in geriatric female chimpanzees and predict likely medical management chal- lenges associated with maintaining an aging chimpanzee population.
Background Management of glenohumeral arthrosis in young patients is a considerable challenge, with a growing need for non-arthroplasty alternatives. The objectives of this study were to develop an ...animal model to study glenoid cartilage repair and to compare surgical repair strategies to promote glenoid chondral healing. Methods Forty-five rabbits underwent unilateral removal of the entire glenoid articular surface and were divided into 3 groups—untreated defect (UD), microfracture (MFx), and MFx plus type I/III collagen scaffold (autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis AMIC)—for the evaluation of healing at 8 weeks (12 rabbits) and 32 weeks (33 rabbits) after injury. Contralateral shoulders served as unoperated controls. Tissue assessments included 11.7-T magnetic resonance imaging (long-term healing group only), equilibrium partitioning of an ionic contrast agent via micro–computed tomography (EPIC-μCT), and histologic investigation (grades on International Cartilage Repair Society II scoring system). Results At 8 weeks, x-ray attenuation, thickness, and volume did not differ by treatment group. At 32 weeks, the T2 index (ratio of T2 values of healing to intact glenoids) was significantly lower for the MFx group relative to the AMIC group ( P = .01) whereas the T1ρ index was significantly lower for AMIC relative to MFx ( P = .01). The micro–computed tomography–derived repair tissue volume was significantly higher for MFx than for UD. Histologic investigation generally suggested inferior healing in the AMIC and UD groups relative to the MFx group, which exhibited improvements in both integration of repair tissue with subchondral bone and tidemark formation over time. Discussion Improvements conferred by AMIC were limited to magnetic resonance imaging outcomes, whereas MFx appeared to promote increased fibrous tissue deposition via micro–computed tomography and more hyaline-like repair histologically. The findings from this novel model suggest that MFx promotes biologic resurfacing of full-thickness glenoid articular injury.
