Introduction
The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between trauma volume and alcohol prohibition during the COVID‐19 lockdown in South Africa.
Methods
This was a retrospective ...analysis of trauma volume from Worcester Regional Hospital in South Africa from 1 January to 28 December 2020. We compared total volume and incidence rates during five calendar periods; one when alcohol sales were allowed as per normal and four when alcohol sales were completely or partially banned. Poisson regression was used to model differences between alcohol ban and non‐ban periods.
Results
During the first period (pre‐COVID‐19, no ban), the trauma admission rate was 95 per 100 days, compared to 39 during the second period (complete ban 1), 74 during the third period (partial ban 1), 40 during the fourth period (complete ban 2) and 105 during the fifth period (partial ban 2). There was a 59–69% decrease in trauma volume between the no ban and complete ban 1 periods. When alcohol sales were partially reinstated, trauma volume significantly increased by 83–90% then dropped again by 39–46% with complete ban 2. By the second half of 2020, when alcohol sales were partially allowed again (partial ban 2), trauma volume increased by 163–250%, thus returning to pre‐COVID‐19 levels.
Discussion and Conclusions
Our study demonstrates a clear trend of decreased trauma volume during periods of complete alcohol prohibition compared to non‐ and partial alcohol bans. This finding suggests that temporary alcohol bans can be used to decrease health facility traffic during national emergencies.

We developed a metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) test using cell-free DNA from body fluids to identify pathogens. The performance of mNGS testing of 182 body fluids from 160 patients with ...acute illness was evaluated using two sequencing platforms in comparison to microbiological testing using culture, 16S bacterial PCR and/or 28S-internal transcribed ribosomal gene spacer (28S-ITS) fungal PCR. Test sensitivity and specificity of detection were 79 and 91% for bacteria and 91 and 89% for fungi, respectively, by Illumina sequencing; and 75 and 81% for bacteria and 91 and 100% for fungi, respectively, by nanopore sequencing. In a case series of 12 patients with culture/PCR-negative body fluids but for whom an infectious diagnosis was ultimately established, seven (58%) were mNGS positive. Real-time computational analysis enabled pathogen identification by nanopore sequencing in a median 50-min sequencing and 6-h sample-to-answer time. Rapid mNGS testing is a promising tool for diagnosis of unknown infections from body fluids.

Purpose
This paper aims to describe the challenges and potential benefits of moving a mentoring programme for young people in care and care leavers to an online mode of delivery in response to the ...South African Government’s efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus disease COVID-19.
Design/methodology/approach
A descriptive account incorporating reflections from staff responsible for the move to e-mentoring and from South African and UK researchers undertaking an exploratory study of mentoring vulnerable youth at the time when COVID-19 restrictions were imposed.
Findings
E-mentoring can provide an effective means to maintaining the essential elements of a well-established mentoring programme for young people in care and care leavers under government enforced “lock-down”. E-mentoring presents particular challenges and benefits in the South African context. Youth in care and care leavers have unequal access to a digital infrastructure, but this can be overcome by investment in resourcing, equipping and training carers, mentors and mentees. The geographical reach offered by online platforms gives young people access to a more diverse pool of mentors.
Originality/value
Both care leaving services and the use of e-mentoring to meet the needs of vulnerable young people are emerging areas of practice and research interest. This paper brings the two areas together in the context of South Africa under COVID-19 “lock-down” through describing the response of one mentoring programme and highlighting the benefits and challenges.
A 14-year-old boy presented with a history of non-tender, subcutaneous coalescing nodules located on the ventral-lateral aspects of the penis shaft for one year. Laboratory investigations for blood ...count and autoimmunity were within normal limits. Complete excision was performed, and on histology, the dermis showed necrobiotic material composed of altered collagen bundles, surrounded by a palisade of histiocytes and scattered lymphocytes, thus allowing a diagnosis of subcutaneous granuloma annulare. Only 18 published cases reported penile granuloma annulare. Medical management was advocated in 7/18 cases, either as a first-line or adjuvant therapy where surgery was not radical. Three patients received high-potency local steroids: two cases underwent adjuvant sessions of intralesional triamcinolone, and one patient received pentoxifylline orally. Surgery should be considered a second-line option since 5/8 of treated cases eventually recurred. The pentoxifylline-treated case witnessed a relapse after drug discontinuation, while topical steroids lead to complete recovery without relapses.

Background: Dissecting cellulitis (DC) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis that leads to cicatricial alopecia. Although DC and Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) have similar characteristics, their ...association remains poorly understood. Objectives: In this prospective observational study, we used trichoscopy to identify subclinical signs of DC in male patients aged 18 years or older, presenting with HS. The objective of this study was to use trichoscopy to identify subclinical signs of DC in patients with confirmed diagnosis of HS. Method: In this prospective, monocentric, observational study, we used trichoscopy to identify subclinical signs of DC in male patients aged 18 years or older, presenting with HS for their initial visit at our HS outpatient clinic from February 1, 2022, to January 31, 2023. Results: Of the 23 male patients with HS, 8 (35%) had subclinical trichoscopy findings consistent with DC. The most frequent location was the vertex (6/8), and the majority of patients had early/inflammatory trichoscopic signs of DC (5/8). Additionally, patients with trichoscopic findings consistent with DC had a higher Hurley stage and the International Hidradenitis Suppurativa Severity Score System (IHS4). Among the cases with trichoscopic findings compatible with DC, the majority (6/8) were classified as having a “follicular” HS according to the Canoui-Poitrine classification. Patients were treated according to European S1 guidelines on HS. Conclusions: This is the first study to evaluate subclinical DC findings in HS patients using trichoscopy. Although the trichoscopic findings of DC are heterogeneous, the use of this non-invasive technique, in conjunction with clinical evaluation, can improve diagnostic accuracy and lead to earlier diagnosis. These findings suggest a potential association between HS and DC, indicating the need for further studies to evaluate this relationship.
