Helicobacter pylori is a gastrointestinal pathogen known to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, most analyses about the effect of H. pylori infection have been done in patients ...with a history of CVD but not in healthy subjects. We evaluated the association between H. pylori infection and subclinical atherosclerosis by using cardiac multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in healthy subjects without previous CVD. From December 2007 to February 2014, 463 subjects who underwent the rapid urease test (CLO test), pulse-wave velocity (PWV) measurement, and MDCT for a self-referred health check-up were enrolled to this study. Helicobacter pylori infection was defined on the basis of CLO test positivity on endoscopic gastric biopsy. Significant coronary artery stenosis was defined as ≥50% stenosis in any of the major epicardial coronary vessel on MDCT. The CLO-positive subjects had a lower high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) level compared to the CLO-negative subjects. The incidence of significant coronary stenosis was higher in the CLO-positive group (7.6% vs. 2.9%, P = 0.01). Furthermore, the number of subjects with coronary artery calcium score >0 and log{(number of segments with plaque)+1} were also significantly higher in the CLO-positive group. However, there was no statistical difference in the number of subjects with coronary artery calcium score >100, the prevalence of any plaque nor the plaque characteristics (calcified, mixed, or soft). Pulse-wave velocity (PWV) was neither associated with CLO test positivity. The CLO-positive group was 3-fold more likely to have significant coronary artery stenosis even after adjusting for confounding factors (adjusted odds ratio 2.813, 95% confidence interval 1.051-7.528, P = 0.04). In a healthy population, current H. pylori infection was associated with subclinical but significant coronary artery stenosis. The causal relationship between H. pylori infection and subclinical atherosclerosis in a "healthy" population remains to be investigated in the future.

Background: As South Korea enters an aged society, the government has emphasized the need for a soft landing of the older adults into the community after the acute and recovery periods under a ...national policy of “community care.” However, the institutionalization of community rehabilitation services to implement this is insufficient. Japan had already entered an aged society when the Long-Term Care Insurance System was introduced in 2000. Thus, the case of Japan’s institutionalization of the system is expected to have implications for us in supplementing a suitable system for the aged society.Objects: This study compared the institutionalization process of the Long-Term Care Insur-ance System in South Korea and Japan and the services currently being implemented in each country.Methods: To examine the institutionalization process and services of the system, related legal rules and regulations, government reports, and articles were reviewed. To examine the operation status of the system, statistical data provided by each country’s government were analyzed.Results: Japan recognized the importance of community rehabilitation even before the en-actment of Long-Term Care Insurance. Thus, community rehabilitation services, such as home-visit rehabilitation and health facilities, were already stipulated in the law. Under such institu-tional legacy, Long-Term Care Insurance was able to establish a service system, which balanced welfare and health-related services, including various types of services with enhanced reha-bilitation functions. In South Korea, rehabilitation policies were not much considered in the process of institutionalizing the system; thus, it was composed mainly of services focusing on care and recuperation. Conclusion: In order to realize community care, rehabilitation services need to be developed in Long-Term Care Insurance System in various forms such as home-visit services, daily services, short stay, and facility services.
The biogeographical range shift of insect pests is primarily governed by temperature. However, the range shift of seasonal long-distance migratory insects may be very different from that of sedentary ...insects. Nilaparvata lugens (BPH), a serious rice pest, can only overwinter in tropical-to-subtropical regions, and some populations migrate seasonally to temperate zones with the aid of low-level jet stream air currents. This study utilized the CLIMEX model to project the overwintering area under the climate change scenarios of RCP2.6 and RCP8.5, both in 2030s and 2080s. The overwintering boundary is predicted to expand poleward and new overwintering areas are predicted in the mid-latitude regions of central-to-eastern China and mid-to-southern Australia. With climate change, the habitable areas remained similar, but suitability decreased substantially, especially in the near-equatorial regions, owing to increasing heat stress. The range shift is similar between RCP2.6-2030s, RCP2.6-2080s, and RCP8.5-2030s, but extreme changes are projected under RCP8.5-2080s with marginal areas increasing from 27.2 to 38.8% and very favorable areas dropping from 27.5 to 3.6% compared to the current climate. These findings indicate that climate change will drive range shifts in BPH and alter regional risks differently. Therefore, international monitoring programs are needed to effectively manage these emerging challenges.

Aim
To investigate sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i)‐induced changes in ketogenic enzymes and transporters in normal and diabetic mice models.
Materials and methods
Normal mice were ...randomly assigned to receive either vehicle or SGLT2i (25 mg/kg/d by oral gavage) for 7 days. Diabetic mice were treated with vehicle, insulin (4.5 units/kg/d by subcutaneous injection) or SGLT2i (25 mg/kg/d by intra‐peritoneal injection) for 5 weeks. Serum and tissues of ketogenic organs were analysed.
Results
In both normal and diabetic mice, SGLT2i increased beta‐hydroxybutyrate (BHB) content in liver, kidney and colon tissue, as well as in serum and urine. In these organs, SGLT2i upregulated mRNA expression of ketogenic enzymes, 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl‐coenzyme A synthase 2 and 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl‐coenzyme A lyase. Similar patterns were observed in the kidney, ileum and colon for mRNA and protein expression of sodium‐dependent monocarboxylate transporters (SMCTs), which mediate the cellular uptake of BHB and butyrate, an important substrate for intestinal ketogenesis. In diabetic mice under euglycaemic conditions, SGLT2i increased major ketogenic enzymes and SMCTs, while insulin suppressed ketogenesis.
Conclusions
SGLT2i increased systemic and tissue BHB levels by upregulating ketogenic enzymes and transporters in the liver, kidney and intestine, suggesting the integrated physiological consequences for ketone body metabolism of SGLT2i administration.

The world is facing a serious biodiversity-loss crisis and stream ecosystems are among the most vulnerable. Human-induced disturbances are accelerating the loss of stream biodiversity; however, their ...ecological impacts are poorly understood. Here, we comprehensively investigated the impact of biodiversity loss on stream food webs using massive food web data (> 1 300 webs). We analyzed the structural changes of food webs upon accumulation of biodiversity loss and specifically compared the severity of losses between fish or benthic macroinvertebrates. In particular, we focused on currently threatened and near-threatened species, to reflect realistic extinction. We simulated their sequential and accumulative extinctions and analyzed the changes in food web structural indices using a linear mixed effect model. Stream food webs tended to be robust against the loss of threatened species; however, the accumulated extinction, including both threatened and near-threatened species, caused substantial changes in food web structures. Notably, significant decreases in the number of links, link density, and generality were observed, indicating the vulnerability of the system. The loss of fish caused larger changes in the food web structure compared to that of benthic macroinvertebrates, indicating the relative importance of fish species in sustaining food web structures. Food web alteration may lead to substantial changes in ecosystem functioning. Our study suggests preemptive action to protect near-threatened species as well as threatened ones for conserving stream ecosystems and their services. Furthermore, we suggest that the food web framework is useful for diagnosing ecosystem-level impacts of species loss in biodiversity conservation.

Abstract
The α-glucosidase inhibitor (α-GI) delays the intestinal absorption of glucose, which reduces postprandial hepatic glucose intake. This mechanism is considered to be effective in treating ...non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here, we investigated the effect of voglibose, an α-glucosidase inhibitor, on high-fat, high-fructose (HFHFr) diet-induced NAFLD models. Seven-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were randomly placed in a chow diet group or an HFHFr diet group. After 10 weeks, mice in the HFHFr group were randomly assigned to one of three groups: HFHFr diet with vehicle, HFHFr with voglibose, or HFHFr with pioglitazone. Each diet and treatment was continued for 10 weeks. The HFHFr diet induced severe NAFLD in terms of steatosis, hepatitis, and fibrosis. Administration of voglibose improved all aspects of NAFLD, comparable to those of pioglitazone, a positive control. In voglibose-treated mice, gene expressions of hepatic lipogenesis markers were significantly downregulated. In the in vitro experiment, reducing the influx of glucose into hepatocytes significantly reduced steatosis and de novo lipogenesis even in the presence of sufficient fructose and fat, demonstrating that the mechanism of voglibose could be effective in treating HFHFr diet-induced NAFLD. These results indicate that voglibose improves HFHFr diet-induced NAFLD by suppressing hepatic de novo lipogenesis.

β-Galactoside α2,6-sialyltransferase (ST6Gal-I) has been shown to catalyze α2,6 sialylation of N-glycan, an action that is highly correlated with colon cancer progression and metastasis. We have ...recently demonstrated that ST6Gal-I-induced α2,6 sialylation is critical for adhesion and migration of colon cancer cells. Increase of α2,6 sialylation also contributes to radioresistance of colon cancer. A number of studies have focused on the involvement of sialylation in tumorigenesis, but the mechanism underlying ST6Gal-I-induced cancer progression and the identity of enzyme substrates has received scant research attention. To provide further support for the relevance of ST6Gal-I in the malignancy of colon cancer, we prepared and characterized a ST6Gal-I-knockdown SW480 colorectal carcinoma cell line. We found that inhibition of ST6Gal-I expression increased cell proliferation and tumor growth in vitro and in vivo. An examination of the effect of sialylation on epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activity and downstream signaling, which are highly correlated with cell proliferation, showed that the loss of ST6Gal-I augmented EGF-induced EGFR phosphorylation and activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in colon cancer cells. Moreover, ST6Gal-I induced sialylation of both wild type and mutant EGFR. These studies provide the first demonstration that ST6Gal-I induces EGFR sialylation in human colon cancer cell lines. Importantly, the anticancer effect of the EGFR kinase inhibitor, gefitinib, was increased in ST6Gal-I-deficient colon cancer cells. In contrast, overexpression of ST6Gal I decreased the cytotoxic effect of gefitinib. These results suggest that sialylation of the EGFR affects EGF-mediated cell growth and induces chemoresistance to gefitinib in colon cancer cells.

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the mediation effect of Contrastive Upward Comparison (CUC) on the relationship between introjected regulation and exhaustion (i.e., introjected ...regulation-CUC-exhaustion). It is also aimed to examine the moderation effect of distress overtolerance on this mediated relationship. In order to resolve the uncertainty about the causality of cross-sectional studies, this study worked on the relationship among the variables by setting an alternative model (i.e., CUC-introjected regulation - exhaustion). The participants were 167 (females, 70.7%) undergraduate and graduate students in South Korea. The results of this study indicated that introjected regulation showed indirect and significant effect on exhaustion via CUC. However, in the alternative model, the indirect effect of introjected regulation in the relationship between CUC and exhaustion was not significant. Furthermore, high distress overtolerance buffered the relationship between introjected regulation and CUC, while it strengthened the association of CUC and exhaustion. Lastly, the results of moderated mediation suggested that students with higher distress overtolerance, experienced more CUC, and emotional exhaustion. The implications and limitations were also discussed.

This paper focuses on the real-time obstacle avoidance and safe navigation of autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs). It introduces the Selective MPC-PF-PSO algorithm, which includes model predictive ...control (MPC), Artificial Potential Fields (APFs), and particle swarm optimization (PSO). This approach involves defining multiple sets of coefficients for adaptability to the surrounding environment. The simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm is appropriate for generating obstacle avoidance paths. The algorithm was implemented on the ROS platform using NVIDIA’s Jetson Xavier, and driving experiments were conducted with a steer-type AGV. Through measurements of computation time and real obstacle avoidance experiments, it was shown to be practical in the real world.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. Among available oral antidiabetic agents, only the thiazolidinediones (TZDs) primarily target insulin ...resistance. TZDs improve insulin sensitivity by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ. Rosiglitazone and pioglitazone have been used widely for T2DM treatment due to their potent glycemic efficacy and low risk of hypoglycemia. However, their use has decreased because of side effects and safety issues, such as cardiovascular concerns and bladder cancer. Lobeglitazone (Chong Kun Dang Pharmaceutical Corporation), a novel TZD, was developed to meet the demands for an effective and safe TZD. Lobeglitazone shows similar glycemic efficacy to pioglitazone, with a lower effective dose, and favorable safety results. It also showed pleiotropic effects in preclinical and clinical studies. In this article, we summarize the pharmacologic, pharmacokinetic, and clinical characteristics of lobeglitazone.
