Our society's understanding of gender is deepening. Children born exposed to all kinds of information about gender variety come to school with more diversified gender identities and expressions. This ...study aims to promote understanding of the role that gender plays in the field of education and generate innovative inspirations for gender-neutral pedagogies in preschool. The current study scanned through previous research in the past 10 years and found that teachers' negative stereotypes about gender transferred to children can limit their potential growth in academic development and future career choices by impacting their self-esteem and enthusiasm in particular fields. Combining former research on school environment and children psychology, we also conclude that bullying, sometimes as a way to express gender identity, thrives in a school culture dominated by the gender-binary view because students become less open-minded towards various values or diversities in interpersonal relationships. Therefore, the present study listed 3 typical scenarios where teacher's gender attitudes can be highly influential to the students' learning quality and gave corresponding pedagogical suggestions on how to avoid stereotype ideas slipping into the classroom.

This article investigates Sino-medievalism through the case study of Beitang, a Gothic Catholic church in Beijing, China. I provide a complete history of Beitang from the early eighteenth century to ...the present with a specific focus on the period in the late nineteenth century. I also discover and define a new category of medievalism that I call Sino-medievalism. To explore what Sino-medievalism entails I examine the relationship between China and Europe, predominantly Britain and France, from 1860 to 1890. I also look at how this relationship was manifested through the Sino-Gothic style in which Beitang was designed and constructed.

As inorganic-organic hybrid materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit the combined advantages of inorganic semiconductor-type photocatalysts and organic/organometallic molecular photocatalysts in the field of solar energy conversion. The excited states, charge separations, and charge mobilities of MOFs remarkably influence the results of MOF-based photocatalytic systems, which reflect varying degrees of characteristics of inorganic semiconductors and organic/organometallic dyes. In this review, we aim to examine how the aforementioned photoelectronic performances affect each step of the photocatalytic processes based on the recent advances of energy catalysis and organic transformations by using MOFs, and attempt to find new clues for modulating the photoelectronic properties of MOF-based catalytic systems to achieve premium photocatalytic efficiencies and selectivities.

Feature extraction and matching are two crucial components in person Re-Identification (ReID). The large pose deformations and the complex view variations exhibited by the captured person images ...significantly increase the difficulty of learning and matching of the features from person images. To overcome these difficulties, in this work we propose a Pose-driven Deep Convolutional (PDC) model to learn improved feature extraction and matching models from end to end. Our deep architecture explicitly leverages the human part cues to alleviate the pose variations and learn robust feature representations from both the global image and different local parts. To match the features from global human body and local body parts, a pose driven feature weighting sub-network is further designed to learn adaptive feature fusions. Extensive experimental analyses and results on three popular datasets demonstrate significant performance improvements of our model over all published state-of-the-art methods.
Shape-morphing uses a single actuation source for complex-task-oriented multiple patterns generation, showing a more promising way than reconfiguration, especially for microrobots, where multiple ...actuators are typically hardly available. Environmental stimuli can induce additional causes of shape transformation to compensate the insufficient space for actuators and sensors, which enriches the shape-morphing and thereby enhances the function and intelligence as well. Here, making use of the ionic sensitivity of alginate hydrogel microstructures, we present a shape-morphing strategy for microrobotic end-effectors made from them to adapt to different physiochemical environments. Pre-programmed hydrogel crosslinks were embedded in different patterns within the alginate microstructures in an electric field using different electrode configurations. These microstructures were designed for accomplishing tasks such as targeting, releasing and sampling under the control of a magnetic field and environmental ionic stimuli. In addition to structural flexibility and environmental ion sensitivity, these end-effectors are also characterized by their complete biodegradability and versatile actuation modes. The latter includes global locomotion of the whole end-effector by self-trapping magnetic microspheres as a hitch-hiker and the local opening and closing of the jaws using encapsulated nanoparticles based on local ionic density or pH values. The versatility was demonstrated experimentally in both in vitro environments and ex vivo in a gastrointestinal tract. Global locomotion was programmable and the local opening and closing was achieved by changing the ionic density or pH values. This 'structural intelligence' will enable strategies for shape-morphing and functionalization, which have attracted growing interest for applications in minimally invasive medicine, soft robotics, and smart materials.

Event cameras, offering extremely high temporal resolution and high dynamic range, have brought a new perspective to addressing common object detection challenges (e.g., motion blur and low light). ...However, how to learn a better spatio-temporal representation and exploit rich temporal cues from asynchronous events for object detection still remains an open issue. To address this problem, we propose a novel asynchronous spatio-temporal memory network (ASTMNet) that directly consumes asynchronous events instead of event images prior to processing, which can well detect objects in a continuous manner. Technically, ASTMNet learns an asynchronous attention embedding from the continuous event stream by adopting an adaptive temporal sampling strategy and a temporal attention convolutional module. Besides, a spatio-temporal memory module is designed to exploit rich temporal cues via a lightweight yet efficient inter-weaved recurrent-convolutional architecture. Empirically, it shows that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods using the feed-forward frame-based detectors on three datasets by a large margin (i.e., 7.6% in the KITTI Simulated Dataset, 10.8% in the Gen1 Automotive Dataset, and 10.5% in the 1Mpx Detection Dataset). The results demonstrate that event cameras can perform robust object detection even in cases where conventional cameras fail, e.g., fast motion and challenging light conditions.
Cells use membrane proteins as gatekeepers to transport ions and molecules, catalyze reactions, relay signals, and interact with other cells. DNA nanostructures with lipidic anchors are promising as ...membrane protein mimics because of their high tunability. However, the design features specifying DNA nanostructures’ functions in lipid membranes are yet to be fully understood. Here, we show that altering patterns of cholesterol units on a cubic DNA scaffold dramatically changes its interaction mode with lipid membranes. This results in simple design rules that allow a single DNA nanostructure to reproduce multiple membrane protein functions: peripheral anchoring, nanopore behavior, and conformational switching to reveal membrane-binding units. Strikingly, the DNA–cholesterol cubes constitute the first open-walled DNA nanopores, as only a quarter of their wall is made of DNA. This functional diversity can increase our fundamental understanding of membrane phenomena and result in sensing, drug delivery, and cell manipulation tools.
