Complex industrial processes may be formulated with hybrid correlations, indicating that linear and nonlinear relationships simultaneously exist among process variables, which brings great challenges ...for process monitoring. However, previous work did not consider the hybrid correlations and treated all the variables as a single subject in which single linear or nonlinear analysis method was employed based on prior process knowledge or some evaluation results, which may degrade the model accuracy and monitoring performance. Therefore, for complex processes with hybrid correlations, this paper proposes a linearity evaluation and variable subset partition based hierarchical modeling and monitoring method. First, linear variable subsets are separated from nonlinear subsets through an iterative variable correlation evaluation procedure. Second, hierarchical models are developed to capture linear patterns and nonlinear patterns in different levels. Third, a hierarchical monitoring strategy is proposed to monitor linear feature and nonlinear feature separately. By separating and modeling different types of variable correlations, the proposed method can explore more accurate process characteristics and thus improve the fault detection ability. Numerical examples and industrial applications are presented to illustrate its efficiency.

China has experienced a dramatic change in atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions over the past four decades. However, it remains unclear how nitrogen (N) deposition has responded to increases and/or decreases in Nr emissions. This study quantitatively assesses temporal and spatial variations in measurements of bulk and calculated dry N deposition in China from 1980 to 2018. A long-term database (1980–2018) shows that bulk N deposition peaked in around 2000, and had declined by 45% by 2016–2018. Recent bulk and dry N deposition (based on monitoring from 2011 to 2018) decreased from 2011 to 2018, with current average values of 19.4 ± 0.8 and 20.6 ± 0.4 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Oxidized N deposition, especially dry deposition, decreased after 2010 due to NOx emission controls. In contrast, reduced N deposition was approximately constant, with reductions in bulk NH4+-N deposition offset by a continuous increase in dry NH3 deposition. Elevated NH3 concentrations were found at nationwide monitoring sites even at urban sites, suggesting a strong influence of both agricultural and non-agricultural sources. Current emission controls are reducing Nr emissions and deposition but further mitigation measures are needed, especially of NH3, built on broader regional emission control strategies.

The intracellular delivery of biofunctional enzymes or therapeutic proteins through systemic administration is of great importance in therapeutic intervention of various diseases. However, current ...strategies face substantial challenges owing to various biological barriers, including susceptibility to protein degradation and denaturation, poor cellular uptake, and low transduction efficiency into the cytosol. Here, we developed a biomimetic nanoparticle platform for systemic and intracellular delivery of proteins. Through a biocompatible strategy, guest proteins are caged in the matrix of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with high efficiency (up to ∼94%) and high loading content up to ∼50 times those achieved by surface conjunction, and the nanoparticles were further decorated with the extracellular vesicle (EV) membrane with an efficiency as high as ∼97%. In vitro and in vivo study manifests that the EV-like nanoparticles can not only protect proteins against protease digestion and evade the immune system clearance but also selectively target homotypic tumor sites and promote tumor cell uptake and autonomous release of the guest protein after internalization. Assisted by biomimetic nanoparticles, intracellular delivery of the bioactive therapeutic protein gelonin significantly inhibits the tumor growth in vivo and increased 14-fold the therapeutic efficacy. Together, our work not only proposes a new concept to construct a biomimetic nanoplatform but also provides a new solution for systemic and intracellular delivery of protein.

In this work, the cobalt ferrate nanoparticles were prepared by a sol-gel method for investigating their influence on hydrogen production from dark fermentation. A moderate amounts (0.1–0.4 g/L) of ...these nanoparticles effectively enhanced the fermentation process. The highest hydrogen yield of 205.24 mL/g glucose was achieved at a dosing level of 0.4 g/L, which was a 31.8% enhancement compared to the control, while excess (0.5 g/L) nanoparticles decreased the hydrogen production by 9.7% compared to the control group. The mechanism analysis exhibited that the nanoparticles could either attach to the microbial surface or enter the cell interior without destroying the cell integrity, which promoted the electron transfer to anaerobes and stimulated the activities of hydrogen-producing enzymes such as enzymes and coenzymes. The microbial community revealed that a moderate amount of cobalt ferrate nanoparticles increased the abundance of Clostridium sensu stricto 1 from 14.49% to 18.84%, which was dominant and favored the sustainable conversion of glucose wastewater into clean hydrogen.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory arthritis that is associated with psoriasis. Previous studies have found an association between smoking and psoriasis, but the association with PsA is ...unclear. The authors aimed to evaluate the association between smoking and the risk of incident PsA in a large cohort of women.
94 874 participants were included from the Nurses' Health Study II over a 14-year period (1991-2005). Information on smoking was collected biennially during follow-up. The incidence of clinician-diagnosed PsA was ascertained and confirmed by self-reported questionnaires.
During 1 303 970 person-years' follow-up, the authors identified 157 incident PsA cases. Among total participants, smoking was associated with an elevated risk of incident PsA. Compared with never smokers, the RR was 1.54 for past smokers (95% CI 1.06 to 2.24) and 3.13 for current smokers (95% CI 2.08 to 4.71). With increasing smoking duration or pack-years, the risk of PsA increased monotonically (p for trend <0.0001). The increase in risk was particularly significant for PsA cases with more severe phenotypes. Secondary analysis among participants developing psoriasis during the follow-up replicated the association, demonstrating an increased risk of PsA among psoriasis cases. The risk was significant for those with higher cumulative measures of smoking or PsA cases with more severe phenotypes.
In this study smoking was found to be associated with a risk of PsA and cumulative measures of smoking were also associated with a higher risk of PsA among women.
Nanomaterials have gained plenty of research interest because of their excellent performance, which is derived from their small size and special structure. In practical applications, to acquire ...nanomaterials with high performance, many methods have been used to modulate the structure and components of materials. To date, ion beam techniques have extensively been applied for modulating the performance of various nanomaterials. Energetic ion beams can modulate the surface morphology and chemical components of nanomaterials. In addition, ion beam techniques have also been used to fabricate nanomaterials, including 2D materials, nanoparticles, and nanowires. Compared with conventional methods, ion beam techniques, including ion implantation, ion irradiation, and focused ion beam, are all pure physical processes; these processes do not introduce any impurities into the target materials. In addition, ion beam techniques exhibit high controllability and repeatability. Here, recent progress in ion beam techniques for nanomaterial surface modification is systematically summarized and existing challenges and potential solutions are presented.

The dynamical structure of a catalyst determines the availability of active sites on its surface. However, how nanoparticle (NP) catalysts re-structure under reaction conditions and how these changes ...associate with catalytic activity remains poorly understood. Using operando transmission electron microscopy, we show that Pd NPs exhibit reversible structural and activity changes during heating and cooling in mixed gas environments containing O
and CO. Below 400 °C, the NPs form flat low index facets and are inactive towards CO oxidation. Above 400 °C, the NPs become rounder, and conversion of CO to CO
increases significantly. This behavior reverses when the temperature is later reduced. Pt and Rh NPs under similar conditions do not exhibit such reversible transformations. We propose that adsorbed CO molecules suppress the activity of Pd NPs at lower temperatures by stabilizing low index facets and reducing the number of active sites. This hypothesis is supported by thermodynamic calculations.
Biochar application as a soil amendment has been proposed as a strategy to improve soil fertility and increase crop yields. However, the effects of successive biochar applications on cotton yields ...and nutrient distribution in soil are not well documented. A three-year field study was conducted to investigate the effects of successive biochar applications at different rates on cotton yield and on the soil nutrient distribution in the 0-100 cm soil profile. Biochar was applied at 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1 (expressed as Control, BC5, BC10, and BC20, respectively) for each cotton season, with identical doses of chemical fertilizers. Biochar enhanced the cotton lint yield by 8.0-15.8%, 9.3-13.9%, and 9.2-21.9% in 2013, 2014, and 2015, respectively, and high levels of biochar application achieved high cotton yields each year. Leaching of soil nitrate was reduced, while the pH values, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen (N), and available K content of the 0-20 cm soil layer were increased in 2014 and 2015. However, the changes in the soil available P content were less substantial. This study suggests that successive biochar amendments have the potential to enhance cotton productivity and soil fertility while reducing nitrate leaching.

Clinical work and research on diabetic wound repair remain challenging globally. Although various conventional wound dressings have been continuously developed, the efficacy is unsatisfactory. The ...effect of drug delivery is limited by the depth of penetration. The sustained release of biomolecules from biological wound dressings is a promising treatment approach to wound healing. An assortment of cell-derived exosomes (exos) have been proved to be instrumental in tissue regeneration, and researchers are dedicated to developing biomolecules carriers with unique properties. Herein, we reported a methacrylate gelatin (GelMA) microneedles (MNs) patch to achieve transdermal and controlled release of exos and tazarotene. Our MNs patch comprising GelMA/PEGDA hydrogel has distinctive biological features that maintain the biological activity of exos and drugs in vitro. Additionally, its unique physical structure prevents it from being tightly attached to the skin of the wound, it promotes cell migration, angiogenesis by slowly releasing exos and tazarotene in the deep layer of the skin. The full-thickness cutaneous wound on a diabetic mouse model was carried out to demonstrate the therapeutic effects of GelMA/PEGDA@T + exos MNs patch. As a result, our GelMA/PEGDA@T + exos MNs patch presents a potentially valuable method for repairing diabetic wound in clinical applications.
