In thermodynamics, the one-electron reduction of O2 by the conduction band electrons of Bi2WO6 or WO3 is not allowed. However, many studies have reported that Bi2WO6 is photocatalytically active for ...organic degradation in aerated aqueous suspension. In this work, the photocatalytic activities of Bi2WO6 and WO3 under visible light have been compared by using phenol degradation as a model reaction. In aerated aqueous solution, Bi2WO6 and WO3 were indeed active and inactive, respectively, as reported. However, by using Pt as a catalyst for O2 reduction, or by using H2O2 as an electron scavenger, Bi2WO6 became much less active than WO3. Similar results were also obtained in the production of H2O2 under visible light, and in the generation of •OH radicals under UV light, measured by a spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Moreover, in the presence of catalase to completely remove H2O2, the EPR signal due to •OH radical was reduced, but not disappeared. These observations indicate that the irradiated Bi2WO6 is not only active for water oxidation to •OH but also active for the two-electron reduction of O2 to H2O2, the latter of which hardly occurs with the irradiated WO3.

The existing optical strain sensors based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) have limitations, such as a complex structure, a limited strain range (±200 με) and poor linearity performance (R-squared value ...< 0.9920); these limitations affect their potential practical applications. Here, four FBG strain sensors equipped with planar UV-curable resin are investigated. The proposed FBG strain sensors have a simple structure, a large strain range (±1800 με) and excellent linearity performance (R-squared value ≥ 0.9998); they further produce the following performances: (1) good optical properties, including an undistorted Bragg peak shape, narrow bandwidth (-3 dB bandwidth ≤ 0.65 nm) and a high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR, the absolute value of SMSR ≥ 15 dB); (2) good temperature sensing properties with high temperature sensitivities (≥47.7 pm/°C) and a good linearity performance (R-squared value ≥ 0.9990); and (3) excellent strain sensing properties with no hysteresis behavior (hysteresis error ≤ 0.058%) and excellent repeatability (repeatability error ≤ 0.045%). Based on their excellent properties, the proposed FBG strain sensors are expected to be applied as high-performance strain sensing devices.

The concordance of RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) with microarrays for genome-wide analysis of differential gene expression has not been rigorously assessed using a range of chemical treatment conditions. ...Here we use a comprehensive study design to generate Illumina RNA-seq and Affymetrix microarray data from the same liver samples of rats exposed in triplicate to varying degrees of perturbation by 27 chemicals representing multiple modes of action (MOAs). The cross-platform concordance in terms of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) or enriched pathways is linearly correlated with treatment effect size (R(2)0.8). Furthermore, the concordance is also affected by transcript abundance and biological complexity of the MOA. RNA-seq outperforms microarray (93% versus 75%) in DEG verification as assessed by quantitative PCR, with the gain mainly due to its improved accuracy for low-abundance transcripts. Nonetheless, classifiers to predict MOAs perform similarly when developed using data from either platform. Therefore, the endpoint studied and its biological complexity, transcript abundance and the genomic application are important factors in transcriptomic research and for clinical and regulatory decision making.
Numerous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have arrived at conflicting conclusions on expressive writing (EW) as an intervention for breast cancer (BC) patients, but there has been no meta-analysis ...of these studies to assess the effectiveness of EW in BC population.
PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and CINAHL and the www.clinicaltrial.gov database on ongoing clinical trials were searched to identify all the RCTs investigating efficacy of EW on the physical and psychological health in BC patients. The risk of bias of the original studies was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Our primary outcomes for physical and psychological health were respectively negative somatic symptoms and negative mood which were stratified by emotional, benefit-finding and multiple prompts in sub-group analyses. The data were analyzed using Review Manager 5.2 and Stata version 12.0 statistical software.
Of the 5,232 titles screened, we identified 11 RCTs with a total of 1,178 participants. The pooled results showed a significant effect of EW using either an emotional prompt or a benefit-finding prompt on reducing negative somatic symptoms in BC patients in the ≤3-month follow-up group Mean Difference (MD), -13.03, 95% CI, -19.23 to -6.83, P<0.0001; MD, -9.18, 95% CI, -15.57 to -2.79, P = 0.005. There was no significant effect of EW on physical health in the >3-month follow-up group. There were no significant differences regarding psychological health indexes between EW intervention and control groups at any of the follow-up time-points (P>0.05).
This systematic review and meta-analysis reveals that EW intervention may have a significantly positive impact on the physical health but not the psychological health in BC patients, but this benefit may not last long. However, further high-quality studies with more homogeneity are needed to confirm the current findings.

Nitritation‐anammox treatment can be a potentially energy‐ and resource‐efficient technology for treating mainstream wastewater. However, the issue of nitrate residue from anammox treatment remains ...to be addressed. Herein, external recirculation of the anammox effluent to a hybrid anaerobic reactor (HAR), which was also to provide a continuous flow with low COD/N for the nitritation‐anammox reactor, was employed to decrease the residue compounds. The recirculation ratio of 50% was observed to be the optimal to achieve the best overall performance with potential savings in energy demand. Specifically, in the operation scenario of R = 50%, the highest COD removal of ~90% by the HAR was achieved. Meanwhile, the lowest COD/NH4+‐N ratio of ~2.0 in the HAR effluent ensured the lowest observed NO3−‐N/NH4+‐N ratio of ~14% in the nitritation‐anammox reactor. These results have demonstrated the feasibility of applying external recirculation for nitrate residue removal via denitrification in the anaerobic pretreatment stage.

The adulteration of herbal products is a threat to consumer safety. Here we surveyed the species composition of commercial Rhodiola products using DNA barcoding as a supervisory method. A Rhodiola ...dietary supplement DNA barcode database was successfully constructed using 82 voucher samples from 10 Rhodiola species. Based on the DNA barcoding standard operating procedure (SOP), we used this database to identify 100 Rhodiolae Crenulatae Radix et Rhizoma decoction piece samples that were purchased from drug stores and hospitals. The results showed that only 36 decoction piece sequences (40%) were authentic R. crenulata, which is recorded in Chinese Pharmacopeia, whereas the other samples were all adulterants and may indicate a potential safety issue. Among the adulterants, 35 sequences (38.9%) were authenticated as R. serrata, nine sequences (10%) were authenticated as R. rosea, which is documented in the United States Pharmacopeia, and the remaining samples were authenticated as other three Rhodiola species. This result indicates decoction pieces that are available in the market have complex origins and DNA barcoding is a convenient tool for market supervision.

Patients with cancer often have compromised immune system which can lead to worse COVID-19 outcomes. The purpose of this study is to assess the association between COVID-19 outcomes and existing ...cancer-specific characteristics.
Patients aged 18 or older with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 between June 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, were identified (n = 314 004) from the Optum® de-identified COVID-19 Electronic Health Record (EHR) derived from more than 700 hospitals and 7000 clinics in the United States. To allow sufficient observational time, patients with less than one year of medical history in the EHR dataset before their COVID-19 tests were excluded (n = 42 365). Assessed COVID-19 outcomes including all-cause 30-day mortality, hospitalization, ICU admission, and ventilator use, which were compared using relative risks (RRs) according to cancer status and treatments.
Among 271 639 patients with COVID-19, 18 460 had at least one cancer diagnosis: 8034 with a history of cancer and 10 426 with newly diagnosed cancer within one year of COVID-19 infection. Patients with a cancer diagnosis were older and more likely to be male, white, Medicare beneficiaries, and have higher prevalences of chronic conditions. Cancer patients had higher risks for 30-day mortality (RR 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.14, P = 0.028) and hospitalization (RR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01-1.07, P = 0.006) but without significant differences in ICU admission and ventilator use compared to non-cancer patients. Recent cancer diagnoses were associated with higher risks for worse COVID-19 outcomes (RR for mortality 1.17, 95% CI 1.08-1.25, P<0.001 and RR for hospitalization 1.10, 95% CI 1.06-1.14, P<0.001), particularly among recent metastatic (stage IV), hematological, liver and lung cancers compared with the non-cancer group. Among COVID-19 patients with recent cancer diagnosis, mortality was associated with chemotherapy or radiation treatments within 3 months before COVID-19. Age, black patients, Medicare recipients, South geographic region, cardiovascular, diabetes, liver, and renal diseases were also associated with increased mortality.
Individuals with cancer had higher risks for 30-day mortality and hospitalization after SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to patients without cancer. More specifically, patients with a cancer diagnosis within 1 year and those receiving active treatment were more vulnerable to worse COVID-19 outcomes.

We report on the formation of a critical ferroelectric state induced by the He+ ion implantation in potassium tantalate niobate crystal. Obvious phase change has been observed in the ion irradiated ...region, which is mostly related to the stable polarized nanometric regions formed during the ion implantation process. Under the irradiation of 2 MeV He+ ions, two distinguishable layers corresponding to different energy transfer modes (elastic nuclear collision and inelastic electronic collision, respectively) between the incident He+ ions and the intrinsic lattices have been formed beneath the irradiated surface. Lattice dynamics before and after the ion implantation process are investigated by the confocal µ-Raman system. And the variations of typical Raman-active vibrational modes demonstrate the presence of lattice distortion in the irradiated region. X-ray diffraction experiments further suggest the mostly uniform lattice elongation in this region. Piezo-response force characteristic measurements reveal the existence of stable polarized nanometric regions with more intense polarization and verify that the crystal with such a phase status possesses extraordinary microscopic disorders, which is different from the traditional ferroelectric or paraelectric phase. Optical transmission experiments demonstrate that the irradiated region possesses relatively low propagation loss. The ion implantation method provides a new approach to form a temperature-stable critical ferroelectric state in relaxor ferroelectric materials. Analyses of the modification on the lattice dynamics of the irradiated region can help us build a clear awareness of the physical essence of this critical state and the relaxor ferroelectricity. Also, with good optical transmittance, the irradiated region is capable of promising optical functional devices.

This study was conducted to determine the role of neuregulin 1 (NRG1)-dependent human epidermal growth factor receptor 3 (HER3) activation in trastuzumab primary resistance, and to observe the ...inhibitory effect of HER3 monoclonal antibody on HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells. BT474 cells (trastuzumab sensitive) and MDA-MB-453 cells (trastuzumab resistant) were first stimulated with NRG1 and then treated with either trastuzumab, HER3 antibody, or a combination of both. The expression of phospho human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (p-HER2), phospho human epidermal growth factor receptor 3 (p-HER3), phospho protein kinase B (p-Akt) and phospho mitogen-activated protein kinase (p-MAPK) were detected by western blotting. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Cell viability was detected by MTT assay. Without NRG1 stimulation, trastuzumab treatment significantly down regulated the expression of p-HER2, increased early apoptosis, and decreased cell viability in BT474 cells. After NRG1 stimulation, the aforementioned effects weakened or disappeared in the trastuzumab treatment group, whereas in the HER3 antibody treatment group, there was significant downregulation in p-HER3 expression and increase in early apoptosis of BT474 cells. In MDA-MB-453 cells, the HER3 antibody significantly downregulated both p-HER2 and p-HER3 and promoted early apoptosis after NRG1 stimulation, however, trastuzumab hardly played a role. p-Akt and p-MAPK were also significantly downregulated by the HER3 antibody after NRG1 stimulation. The expressions of p-HER2, p-HER3, p-Akt and p-MAPK were all down-regulated after HER3 gene silencing, compared to the control. NRG1-dependent activation of HER3 induces primary resistance to trastuzumab in HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells. HER3 monoclonal antibody combined with trastuzumab may serve as a treatment choice for patients with primary resistance to trastuzumab.
Hepatotoxicity is frequently observed following acute cadmium (Cd) exposure in chicken. Oxidative stress and subsequent inflammation are regarded as the main reasons for cadmium-induced liver injury. ...NOD-like receptor (NLR) family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome-induced pyroptosis is involved in various inflammatory diseases, including liver injury. Poultry are more susceptible to harmful effects of heavy metals. However, the mechanism of cadmium-induced liver injury in chicken is still elusive. In this study, the effect of cadmium on chicken liver cells and the underlying mechanisms were investigated. The results showed mitochondria was damaged and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) were generated in chicken liver cell line LMH after cadmium exposure. Furthermore, cadmium-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and the cell membrane rupture indicated LMH cells pyroptosis. The ROS scavengers, acetylcysteine (NAC) and Mito-TEMPO prevented pyroptosis in LMH cells, suggesting that ROS were responsible for the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome induced by cadmium. Additionally, anti-oxidative transcription factor Nrf2 was inhibited after cadmium exposure, explaining the excessive ROS generation. In summary, our study showed that cadmium leads to ROS generation by inducing mitochondrial damage and inhibiting Nrf2 activity, which promotes NLRP3 inflammasome activation and eventually induces pyroptosis in LMH cells.
