The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in an unprecedented public health crisis. Because of the novelty ...of the virus, there are currently no SARS-CoV-2-specific treatments or vaccines available. Therefore, rapid development of effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 are urgently needed. Here, we developed a pilot-scale production of PiCoVacc, a purified inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus vaccine candidate, which induced SARS-CoV-2-specific neutralizing antibodies in mice, rats, and nonhuman primates. These antibodies neutralized 10 representative SARS-CoV-2 strains, suggesting a possible broader neutralizing ability against other strains. Three immunizations using two different doses, 3 or 6 micrograms per dose, provided partial or complete protection in macaques against SARS-CoV-2 challenge, respectively, without observable antibody-dependent enhancement of infection. These data support the clinical development and testing of PiCoVacc for use in humans.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) represents a diverse range of conditions characterized by high incidence and mortality rates, and it is mainly associated with immune-mediated mechanisms and mitochondrial ...metabolism dysfunction. Cuproptosis, a recently identified form of programmed cell death dependent on copper, is closely linked to mitochondrial respiration and contributes to various diseases. Our study aimed to investigate the involvement of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) in AKI.
Identification of CRGs was conducted using differential expression analysis, and subsequent Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were conducted using human sequencing profiles. Utilizing CIBERSORT algorithm, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, nomogram development, and decision curve analysis (DCA), the association among immune scores, CRGs, and the diagnostic value of these genes was explored.
Notably, six CRGs (FDX1, DLD, DLAT, DBT, PDHA1, and ATP7A) were identified as significant differentiators between AKI and non-AKI groups. The ROC curve, based on these six genes, demonstrated an AUC value of 0.917, which was further validated using an additional dataset with an AUC value of 0.902. Nomogram and DCA further confirmed the accuracy of the model in predicting the risk of AKI.
This study elucidated the role of cuproptosis in AKI and revealed the association between CRGs and infiltrated immune cells through comprehensive bioinformatic techniques. The six-gene cuproptosis-related signature exhibited remarkable predictive efficiency for AKI.

Phlorotannins are a group of complex polymers of phloroglucinol (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene), which are unique compounds from marine brown algae. In our present study, a procedure for extraction and ...enrichment of phlorotannins from
with highly antioxidant potentials was established. After comparison of different extraction methods, the optimal extraction conditions were established as follows. The freeze-dried seaweed powder was extracted with 30% ethanol-water solvent with a solid/liquid ratio of 1:5 at temperature of 25 °C for 30 min. After extraction, the phlorotannins were fractioned by different solvents, among which the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited both the highest total phlorotannin content (88.48 ± 0.30 mg PGE/100 mg extract) and the highest antioxidant activities. The extracts obtained from these locations were further purified and characterized using a modified UHPLC-QQQ-MS method. Compounds with 42 different molecular weights were detected and tentatively identified, among which the fuhalol-type phlorotannins were the dominant compounds, followed by phlorethols and fucophlorethols with diverse degree of polymerization. Eckol-type phlorotannins including some newly discovered carmalol derivatives were detected in
species for the first time. Our study not only described the complex phlorotannins composition in
, but also highlighted the challenges involved in structural elucidation of these compounds.
Electrospinning and annealing methods are applied to prepare cobalt nanoparticles decorated in N-doped carbon nanofibers (Co/N-C NFs) with solid and macroporous structures. In detail, the ...nanocomposites are synthesized by carbonization of as-electrospun polyacrylonitrile/cobalt acetylacetonate nanofibers in an argon atmosphere. The solid Co/N-C NFs have lengths up to dozens of microns with an average diameter of ca. 500 nm and possess abundant cobalt nanoparticles on both the surface and within the fibers, and the cobalt nanoparticle size is about 20 nm. The macroporous Co/N-C NFs possess a hierarchical pore structure, and there are macropores (500 nm) and mesopores (2–50 nm) existing in this material. The saturation magnetization (M s) and coercivity (H c) of the solid Co/N-C NFs are 28.4 emu g–1 and 661 Oe, respectively, and those of the macroporous Co/N-C NFs are 23.3 emu g–1 and 580 Oe, respectively. The solid Co/N-C NFs exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave absorbability, and a minimum reflection loss (RL) value of −25.7 dB is achieved with a matching thickness of 2 mm for solid Co/N-C NFs when the filler loading is 5 wt %, and the effective bandwidth (RL ≤ −10 dB) is 4.3 GHz. Moreover, the effective microwave absorption can be achieved in the whole range of 1–18 GHz by adjusting the thickness of the sample layer and content of the dopant sample.

Based on urban economics, behavioural economics and western economics theory, we analysed the effects of air pollution on the real estate market through VAR model and IRF using the AQI and the ...residential commercial housing market data from January 1, 2015 to June 30, 2020. We found that there is intrinsic link between changes in air pollution levels and changes in real estate market. When air pollution levels increase, it will have a sustained inhibitory effect on housing price and housing turnover. The effect on housing price will last about 5 months and the effect on housing turnover will last about 2 months. After having a comparative analysis of the IRF of the average price in six jurisdictions in Shanghai we found that inhibitory effect which air pollution impact on real estate market has different forms of expression. Residents in areas with relatively poor air quality are more willing to pay for clean air and housing transactions in areas with relatively good air quality are more sensitive to air pollution.
The spatial diffusion of epidemic disease follows distance decay law in geography and social physics, but the mathematical models of distance decay depend on concrete spatio-temporal conditions. This ...paper is devoted to modeling spatial diffusion patterns of COVID-19 stemming from Wuhan city to Hubei province, China. The modeling approach is to integrate analytical method and experimental method. The local gravity model is derived from allometric scaling and global gravity model, and then the parameters of the local gravity model are estimated by observational data and least squares calculation. The main results are as below. The local gravity model based on power law decay can effectively describe the diffusion patterns and process of COVID-19 in Hubei Province, and the goodness of fit of the gravity model based on negative exponential decay to the observational data is not satisfactory. Further, the goodness of fit of the model to data entirely became better and better over time, the size elasticity coefficient increases first and then decreases, and the distance attenuation exponent decreases first and then increases. Moreover, the significance of spatial autoregressive coefficient in the model is low, and the confidence level is less than 80%. The conclusions can be reached as follows. (1) The spatial diffusion of COVID-19 of Hubei bears long range effect, and the size of a city and the distance of the city to Wuhan affect the total number of confirmed cases. (2) Wuhan direct transmission is the main process in the spatial diffusion of COVID-19 in Hubei at the early stage, and the horizontal transmission between regions is not significant. (3) The effect of spatial lockdown and isolation measures taken by Chinese government against the transmission of COVID-19 is obvious. This study suggests that the role of urban gravity (size and distance) should be taken into account to prevent and control epidemic disease.

Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environment contaminant due to the development of electroplating and metallurgical industry. Cd can be enriched by organisms via food chain, causing the enlarged ...environmental problems and posing threats to the health of humans. Polydatin (PD), a natural stilbenoid compound derived from Polygonum cuspidatum, shows pronouncedly curative effect on oxidative damage. In this work, the protective effects of PD on oxidative damage induced by Cd in Musca domestica (housefly) larvae were evaluated. The larvae were exposed to Cd and/or PD, subsequently, the oxidative stress status, mitochondria activity, oxidative phosphorylation efficiency, and survival rate were assessed. Cd exposure generated significant increases of malondialdehyde (MDA), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-oxoG) in the housefly larvae, causing mitochondrial dysfunction and survival rate decline. Interestingly, pretreatment with PD exhibited obviously mitochondrial protective effects in the Cd-exposed larvae, as evidenced by reduced MDA, ROS and 8-oxoG levels, and increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), mitochondrial electron transfer chain, and mitochondrial membrane potential, as well as respiratory control ratio. These results suggested that PD could attenuate Cd-induced damage via maintaining redox balance, stimulating SOD activity, and regulating mitochondria activity in housefly larvae. As a natural polyphenolic chemical, PD can act as a potential candidate compounds to relieve Cd injury.

Based on 2010-2019 Chinese logistics listed companies as research samples, the paper used the binary Logit model measuring degree of financing constraints. The Kernel density function and Markov ...chain model are used to forecast China listed companies financing logistics dynamic constraints and business performance growth. Furthermore the stock of knowledge was chosen as a threshold variable to explore the impact of financing constraints on corporate performance growth of listed logistics enterprises. We find that the degree of financing constraints of logistics enterprises in our country has not been significantly eased. Corporate performance has not changed significantly and there are no obvious spatial gap and polarization with the passage of time. The impact of financing constraints on the corporate performance growth of logistics enterprises in China has a double threshold effect of knowledge stock, and has an inhibitory effect that first increases and then decreases. This is because in the short term, the investment of knowledge stock by enterprises can crowd out more corporate liquidity, and in the long run, it is related to the conversion rate of the knowledge stock itself. Because of the uneven regional distribution of resources and differences in the degree of economic development, there is a growing disincentive effect in central China as the stock of knowledge accumulates.

Pyrophosphate (PPi) is a byproduct of over 120 biosynthetic reactions, and an overabundance of PPi can inhibit industrial synthesis. Pyrophosphatases (PPases) can effectively hydrolyze pyrophosphate ...to remove the inhibitory effect of pyrophosphate. In the present work, a thermophilic alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase from Thermococcus onnurineus NA1 was studied. The optimum pH and temperature of Ton1914 were 9.0 and 80 °C, respectively, and the half-life was 52 h at 70 °C and 2.5 h at 90 °C. Ton1914 showed excellent thermal stability, and its relative enzyme activity, when incubated in Tris-HCl 9.0 containing 1.6 mM Mg2+ at 90 °C for 5 h, was still 100%, which was much higher than the control, whose relative activity was only 37%. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) results showed that the promotion of Ton1914 on long-chain DNA was more efficient than that on short-chain DNA when the same concentration of templates was supplemented. The yield of long-chain products was increased by 32–41%, while that of short-chain DNA was only improved by 9.5–15%. Ton1914 also increased the yields of UDP-glucose and UDP-galactose enzymatic synthesis from 40.1% to 84.8% and 20.9% to 35.4%, respectively. These findings suggested that Ton1914 has considerable potential for industrial applications.
