Context. The modeling of planetary interiors requires accurate equations of state (EOSs) for the basic constituents with proven validity in the difficult pressure–temperature regime extending up to ...50 000 K and hundreds of megabars. While EOSs based on first-principles simulations are now available for the two most abundant elements, hydrogen and helium, the situation is less satisfactory for water where no wide-range EOS is available despite its requirement for interior modeling of planets ranging from super-Earths to planets several times the size of Jupiter. Aims. As a first step toward a multi-phase EOS for dense water, we develop a temperature-dependent EOS for dense water covering the liquid and plasma regimes and extending to the super-ionic and gas regimes. This equation of state covers the complete range of conditions encountered in planetary modeling. Methods. We use first-principles quantum molecular dynamics simulations and the Thomas-Fermi extension to reach the highest pressures encountered in giant planets several times the size of Jupiter. Using these results, as well as the data available at lower pressures, we obtain a parametrization of the Helmholtz free energy adjusted over this extended temperature and pressure domain. The parametrization ignores the entropy and density jumps at phase boundaries but we show that it is sufficiently accurate to model interior properties of most planets and exoplanets. Results. We produce an EOS given in analytical form that is readily usable in planetary modeling codes and dynamical simulations (a fortran implementation is provided). The EOS produced is valid for the entire density range relevant to planetary modeling, for densities where quantum effects for the ions can be neglected, and for temperatures below 50 000K. We use this EOS to calculate the mass-radius relationship of exoplanets up to 5000 MEarth, explore temperature effects in the wet Earth-like, ocean planets and pure water planets, and quantify the influence of the water EOS for the core on the gravitational moments of Jupiter.

Context.
Juno can currently measure Jupiter’s gravitational moments to unprecedented accuracy, and models for the interior structure of the planet are thus being put to the test. While equations of ...state (EOSs) based on first principles or ab initio simulations are available and used for the two most abundant elements constituting the envelope, hydrogen and helium, significant discrepancies remain regarding the predictions of the inner structure of Jupiter. The differences are severe enough to clutter the analysis of Juno’s data and even cast doubts on the usefulness of these computationally expensive EOSs for the modeling of the interior of Jupiter and exoplanets at large.
Aims.
Using our newly developed EOSs for hydrogen and helium, we asses the ab initio EOSs currently available and establish their efficiency at predicting the interior structure of Jupiter in a two-layer model. We paid particular attention to the calculation of the total entropy for hydrogen. It is required to calculate the convective H–He envelope but is a derived quantity from ab initio simulations.
Methods.
The ab initio EOSs used in this work are based on a parameterization of the ab initio simulation points using a functional form of the Helmholtz free energy. The current paper carries on from our previous, recently published work. Compared to previous ab initio EOSs available, the approach used here provides an independent means of calculating the entropy that was recently pointed out as deficient in some ab initio results.
Results.
By adjusting our free energy parameterization to reproduce previous ab initio EOS behavior, we identify the source of the disagreement previously reported for the interior structure of Jupiter. We further point to areas where care should be taken when building EOSs for the modeling of giant planets. This concerns the interpolation between the ab initio results and the physical models used to cover the low-density range, as well as the interpolation of the ab initio simulation results at high densities. This sensitivity falls well within the uncertainties of the ab initio simulations. This suggests that hydrogen EOSs should be carefully benchmarked using a simple planetary model before being used in the more advanced planetary models needed to interpret the Juno data. We finally provide an updated version of our recently published ab initio hydrogen EOS.

Bagasse is an abundant by-product from sugarcane production that can be used for conversion into biofuels. Nonetheless, the recalcitrant structures of lignocellulosic fibers required a pretreatment ...prior conversion into biofuels. In this study, four mechanical deconstruction methods were compared in terms of energy demand and energy efficiency at lab scale: BM (ball mill), VBM (vibratory ball mill), CM (centrifugal mill) and JM (jet mill). Results indicate that VBM was more effective compared to BM, JM and CM in enzymatic accessibility and sugars solubilization: VBM-3h > BM-72 h > JM-5000 rpm > CM-0.12 mm. However, preliminary energetic assessment showed that at lab scale, the CM (centrifugal mill) as mechanical fractionation process appears to be the most efficient in terms of energy-efficiency (kg glucose/kWh) compared to BM, VBM and JM. A comparison with literature pretreatments data highlighted that fine and/or ultrafine milling process (BM, VBM, CM) are simpler saccharification technologies, which not required any chemical or water inputs, thus minimizing waste generation and treatment.
•VBM (vibro ball milling) was the most effective in decreasing of cellulose crystallinity.•BM (ball milling) was the most effective in increasing surface area.•The highest energy efficiency was obtained with CM (centrifugal milling).

Severe asthma is a compelling challenge in clinical practice. Adolescence represents a relevant aspect of this issue. We report a series of adolescents with severe asthma and evaluated before and ...after a one-year standardized guideline-oriented treatment. We explored the relevance of symptom perception, including nasal and bronchial complaints, assessed by visual analog scale (VAS) and the perception of asthma control measured by the asthma control test (ACT). The current study demonstrated that adolescents perceived a significant improvement in their symptoms (p < 0.0001) and asthma control (p < 0.001) after adequate treatment. In conclusion, the management of severe asthma in adolescents should be carefully addressed to also consider the patient’s perception.
The aim of this study was the application of an innovative dry chemo-mechanical pretreatment using different mechanical stresses to produce bioethanol from sugarcane bagasse (SB). The effect of ...different milling methods on physicochemical composition, enzymatic hydrolysis, bioethanol production and energy efficiency was also evaluated. SB was pretreated with NaOH and H3PO4 at high materials concentration (5 kg/L). Results indicate that vibratory milling (VBM) was more effective in the reduction of particles size and cellulose crystallinity compared to centrifugal (CM) and ball (BM) milling. NaOH pretreatment coupling to BM and VBM was preferred to enhance glucose yields and bioethanol production, while CM consumed less energy compared to BM and VBM. Moreover, the highest energy efficiency (η=0.116 kg glucose/kWh) was obtained with NaOH-CM. Therefore, the combination of dry NaOH and CM appears the most suitable and interesting pretreatment for the production of bioethanol from SB.

Nocturnal hypoxemia adversely affects outcomes in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Although an early detection of this abnormality may be desirable, still its predictability remains uncertain. The ...Lung Clearance Index (LCI) is a measure of lung ventilation distribution obtained from a multiple-breath washout technique (MBW), recently implemented in patients with CF. This study aimed to establish whether the LCI predicts nocturnal hypoxemia in patients with stable CF, with mild to moderate disease, and normal diurnal gas exchange.
31 stable patients (15 males, mean age 17.4 ± 5.2 years) with mild to moderate CF, normoxic when awake, were enrolled. In all patients we performed nocturnal cardio-respiratory polygraphy, lung function measurement, and MBW test to derive LCI values.
LCI was abnormal in most of the patients and inversely correlated with mean nocturnal SpO2 (r = −0.880 p < 0.01). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, performed to assess whether LCI predicted nocturnal hypoxemia, revealed a high predictive accuracy of LCI for nocturnal desaturation (AUC = 0.96; Youden index = 0.79). Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) was predictive only in patients with more severe airway obstruction, with a moderate degree of accuracy (AUC 0.71).
The LCI showed a high effectiveness in predicting nocturnal hypoxemia in stable patients with CF, particularly when compared with a traditional parameter of lung function such as FEV1.

Sensitization to latex proteins is crucial because it highlights the cross reactivity to inhalants (pollen) and food (fruit). It is very essential in an accurate and specific clinical setting.

Histamine has to bind to specific receptors to exert its physiological and pathophysiological functions. Endogenous histamine is the main mediator of the immediate allergic response, which moreover, performs other multiple functions, including regulation of gastric secretion, neurotransmission in the central nervous system, and immunomodulatory activity. The involvement of histamine in various disorders and the importance of receptors in the clinical features have relevant implications in clinical practice. Anti-H1 antihistamines contrast the histamine-dependent effects, mainly concerning nasal symptoms and cutaneous itching and wheal. Antihistamines are among the most prescribed drugs in pediatric care. This review updates the practical use of antihistamines in children and adolescents.
Hexavalent vaccines, protecting against six diseases (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis DTaP, poliovirus, hepatitis B virus HBV, and Haemophilus influenzae type b Hib, are routinely the standard of care ...in Europe. The use of combined vaccines allows the reduction of number of injections and side effects, the reduction of costs, and the increase in adherence of the family to the vaccination schedule both in terms of the number of doses and timing. The safety profile, efficacy and effectiveness of hexavalent vaccines have been extensively documented in infants and children born at term, and data are accumulating in preterm infants. Hexavalent vaccines are particularly important for preterm infants, who are at increased risk for severe forms of vaccine preventable diseases. However, immunization delay has been commonly reported in this age group. All the three hexavalent vaccines currently marketed in Italy can be used in preterm infants, and recent data confirm that hexavalent vaccines have a similar or lower incidence of adverse events in preterm compared to full-term infants; this is likely due to a weaker immune system response and reduced ability to induce an inflammatory response in preterm infants. Apnoea episodes are the adverse events that can occur in the most severe preterm infants and / or with history of respiratory distress. The risk of apnoea after vaccination seems to be related to a lower gestational age and a lower birth weight, supporting the hypothesis that it represents an unspecific response of the preterm infant to different procedures. High seroprotection rates have been reported in preterm infants vaccinated with hexavalent vaccine. However, a lower gestational age seems to be associated with lower antibody titres against some vaccine antigens (e.g. HBV, Hib, poliovirus serotype 1, and pertussis), regardless of the type of hexavalent vaccine used. Waiting for large effectiveness studies, hexavalent vaccines should be administered in preterm infants according to the same schedule recommended for infants born at term, considering their chronological age and providing an adequate monitoring for cardio-respiratory events in the 48-72 h after vaccination, especially for infants at risk of recurrence of apnoea.
