Hydrazine has been applied diffusely in most of the chemical industry; however, it is a hazardous environmental pollutant and highly toxic to organisms. Selective, rapid, and sensitive detection of ...hydrazine thus becomes absolutely necessary in both biological and environmental sciences. Accordingly, fluorescence probes for hydrazine have been paid great attention in recent years. Disclosed here is the near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probe with a turn-on fluorescent probe CyJ based on the structure–emission property relationships of the NIR dyes containing an acetyl group as the recognizing moiety. This new probe not only can be readily prepared, but also shows excellent sensing properties. First and most important of all, CyJ is highly selective for N2H4 over various anions, cations, and other amino compounds and has a low limit of detection (LOD) of hydrazine (5.4 ppb as fluorescence sensor and 6.1 ppb as UV sensor). Besides, CyJ exhibited a dramatic increase in fluorescence at λmax = 706 nm in the presence of N2H4, and it offers a rapid, colorimetric and vapor sensing detection process for N2H4 in both aqueous solution and diluted human serum. Furthermore, CyJ has good cell-membrane permeability and low cytotoxicity. In addition, we have successfully applied the CyJ to visualize N2H4 in live mouse and, for the first time, in tissues such as the liver, lung, kidney, heart, and spleen.

The near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence sensor for rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of cystenine (Cys) is of great importance in both biological and environmental sciences. Herein, we report a ...specific probe with turn-on fluorescence property, visible color change with naked-eye, and large wavelength shift on UV spectra for highly selective detection of Cys over homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH) in both HEPES buffer (10 mM, pH 7.4) and diluted human serum. The probe based on the conjugate addition–cyclization reaction has a low limit of detection to Cys (0.16 μM as NIR fluorescence sensor and 0.13 μM as UV sensor). Kinetic study indicated that the probe has a very rapid response to Cys, owing to the much higher pseudo-first-order reaction constant with Cys (299 M–1 s–1) than with Hcy (1.29 M–1 s–1) or GSH (0.53 M–1 s–1). Upon addition of Cys to a solution of the probe, the color changed from purple to cyan, with the maximum wavelength shifting from 582 to 674 nm in the UV spectrum and a fluorescence emission at 697 nm appearing. It has been successfully applied for determination of Cys in diluted serum and bioimaging of Cys in living cells with low cell toxicity.

Numerous studies have found that shame increases individuals' anger at others. However, according to recent theories about the social function of shame and anger at others, it is possible that shame ...controls individuals' anger at others in specific conditions. We replicated previous findings that shame increased individuals' anger at others' unfairness, when others were not aware of the individual's experience of shameful events. We also found for the first time that shame controlled or even decreased individuals' anger at others' unfairness, when others were aware of the individual's experience of shameful events. The results were consistent when shame was induced by either a recall paradigm or an imagination paradigm, and in either the ultimatum game or the dictator game. This suggests that shame strategically controls individuals' anger at others to demonstrate that they are willing to benefit others, when facing the risk of social exclusion. Our findings highlight the interpersonal function of shame and deepen the understanding of the relationship between shame and anger at others.

Based on the fact that the granted amount of patents in Chinese universities have increased significantly, we took the invention patents applied by universities in Sichuan Province from 2001 to 2015 ...as a sample and adopted Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards model. We found significant differences in the survival time of invention patents in the three types of universities Based on this, we conducted an empirical study and comparative analysis on the factors influencing the survival time of the three types of universities. It was found that the number of citations and the number of patent families have different effects on the survival time of invention patents in the three types of universities; the examination time and the number of inventors have negative effects on the survival time of invention patents in the three types of universities; the number of claims, the number of IPCs and the number of forward citations have positive effects on the survival time of invention patents in the three types of universities. This paper can provide some reference for universities to cultivate high-value patents.
The accurate forecast of algal blooms can provide helpful information for water resource management. However, the complex relationship between environmental variables and blooms makes the forecast ...challenging. In this study, we build a pipeline incorporating four commonly used machine learning models, Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest Regression (RFR), Wavelet Analysis (WA)-Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and WA-Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), to predict chlorophyll-a in coastal waters. Two areas with distinct environmental features, the Neuse River Estuary, NC, USA—where machine learning models are applied for short-term algal bloom forecast at single stations for the first time—and the Scripps Pier, CA, USA, are selected. Applying the pipeline, we can easily switch from the NRE forecast to the Scripps Pier forecast with minimum model tuning. The pipeline successfully predicts the occurrence of algal blooms in both regions, with more robustness using WA-LSTM and WA-BPNN than SVR and RFR. The pipeline allows us to find the best results by trying different numbers of neuron hidden layers. The pipeline is easily adaptable to other coastal areas. Experience with the two study regions demonstrated that enrichment of the dataset by including dominant physical processes is necessary to improve chlorophyll prediction when applying it to other aquatic systems.
The present study examined optimism, as measured by the Life Orientation Test-Revised, and coping behaviors, as measured by the COPE scale, as predictors of hedonic well-being (viz., life ...satisfaction, positive affect, and subjective happiness) in a sample of 462 Asian Indians (237 women and 225 men). We hypothesized that optimism would remain an important predictor of well-being even after accounting for coping behaviors. As the frontier of scientific and technological innovation, universities will produce a large number of patents based on their talent, technology and resource advantages. How to evaluate the value of ...university patents in a more scientific and efficient manner is of great significance in improving the scientific research and innovation capability of universities and promoting the transfer and transformation of university patents. Firstly, combined with the characteristics of universities and the definition of “high-value patents”, we constructed a scientific evaluation index system of university patent value. Secondly, machine learning algorithms were used to build patent value evaluation models. Finally, we conducted an empirical study with invention patent data from 134 universities in Sichuan Province, and then tested six evaluation models for their performances. The XGB model and GBDT model are found to have better accuracy and reliability. In addition, the number of IPC classifications, patent family citations and independent claims are of higher importance in patent value evaluation, university characteristics are less important to the value of university patents.
The goal of this study was to determine if social problem-solving processes, as measured by the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised (D'Zurilla, Nezu, & Maydeu-Olivares, 2002), might account for ...the positive association between loneliness and negative affectively symptoms, namely, anxious and depressive symptoms in a sample of 165 college students. Controlling for gender, we tested a multiple mediation model in which social problem-solving processes were hypothesized to account for the loneliness-negative affective symptoms link. Results of these mediation analyses indicated that negative problem orientation fully mediated the positive association found between loneliness and anxious symptoms. Alternatively, negative problem orientation only partially mediated the positive association found between loneliness and depressive symptoms. These findings indicate that beyond loneliness, it would be useful to consider the role of social problem-solving processes, especially negative problem orientation, in predicting negative affective symptoms. Accordingly, our findings point to the usefulness of interventions that not only target reducing loneliness, but also reducing negative problem orientation in adults, in efforts to thwart the development of negative affective symptoms.

In the present study, we examined whether social problem-solving processes would add predictive utility over loneliness in accounting for unique variance in ill-being (viz., depressive symptoms & suicide behavior) and well-being (viz., life satisfaction & positive affect) in a sample of 230 females. Results of hierarchical regression analyses indicated that social problem-solving processes added significant predictive utility in accounting for unique variance in depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, and positive affect. Moreover, negative problem orientation emerged as a significant unique predictor of both ill-being and well-being. In contrast, positive problem orientation emerged as a significant unique predictor of well-being and only one index of ill-being. Some implications of the present findings are discussed.
