In the present work, a numerical finite element framework is introduced to model and solve the response of nonlinear soft dielectrics, including the effects of Maxwell stress and flexoelectricity at ...finite strains. Weak forms, finite element discretizations and consistent linearizations, able to handle strain gradient in the context of flexoelectricity are introduced. Numerical algorithms for the treatment of a soft dielectric in a surrounding medium are presented, more specifically to handle the effects of discontinuities of the Maxwell stress at the interfaces. Finally, several benchmarks are proposed to assess the present formulations and numerical schemes, through applications of special cases of interest: induced piezoelectricity in non-piezoelectric materials due to coupling of Maxwell stress and electrets, flexoelectricity, or stretching of electroactive soft dielectrics subjected to an external electric field.

To evaluate the effect of the different doses of antithymocyte globulin (ATG) on the incidence of acute GVHD among patients receiving hematopoietic SCT without ex vivo T-cell-depletion from ...haploidentical donors, 224 patients with standard-risk hematological malignancy were randomized in this study. One hundred and twelve patients received 6 mg/kg ATG, whereas the remaining patients received 10 mg/kg ATG. This study was registered at http://www.chictr.org as No. ChiCTR-TRC-11001761. The incidence of grade III-IV acute GVHD was higher in the ATG-6 group (16.1%, 95% confidence interval (CI), 9.1-23.1%) than in the ATG-10 group (4.5%, CI, 0.7-8.3%, P=0.005, 95% CI for the difference, -19.4% to -3.8%). EBV reactivation occurred more frequently in the ATG-10 group (25.3%, 17.1-33.5%) than in the ATG-6 group (9.6% (4.0-15.2%), P=0.001). The 1-year disease-free survival rates were 84.3% (77.3-91.3%) and 86.0% (79.2-92.8%) for the ATG-6 group and ATG-10 groups, respectively (P=0.88). In conclusion, although 6 mg/kg ATG applied in haploidentical transplantation decreased the risk of EBV reactivation compared with 10 mg/kg ATG, this treatment exposes patients to a higher risk for severe acute GVHD.

Prior data indicate similar outcomes after transplants from human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-haplotype-matched relatives, HLA-identical siblings and HLA-matched unrelated donors. We used our prospective ...data set to answer a clinically important question: who is the best donor for a person with acute leukaemia transplanted in first complete remission. Patients were randomly divided into training (n=611) and validation (n=588) sets. A total of 1199 consecutive subjects received a transplant from an HLA-haplotype-matched relative using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and anti-thymocyte globulin (n=685) or an HLA-identical sibling (n=514); 3-year leukaemia-free survivals (LFSs) were 75 and 74% (P=0.95), respectively. The multivariate model identified three major risk factors for transplant-related mortality (TRM): older donor/recipient age, female-to-male transplants and donor-recipient ABO major-mismatch transplants. A risk score was developed based on these three features. TRMs were 8%, 15% and 31% for subjects with scores of 0-1, 2 and 3, respectively, (P<0.001). Three-year LFSs were 78%, 74% and 58%, respectively, (P=0.003). The risk score was validated in an independent cohort. In conclusion, our data confirm donor source is not significantly correlated with transplant outcomes. Selection of the best donor needs to consider donor-recipient age, matching for gender and ABO incompatibility among persons with acute leukaemia receiving related transplants under our transplant modality.

2D electrode materials are often deployed on conductive supports for electrochemistry and there is a great need to understand fundamental electrochemical processes in this electrode configuration. ...Here, an integrated experimental-theoretical approach is used to resolve the key electronic interactions in outer-sphere electron transfer (OS-ET), a cornerstone elementary electrochemical reaction, at graphene as-grown on a copper electrode. Using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy, and co-located structural microscopy, the classical hexaamineruthenium (III/II) couple shows the ET kinetics trend: monolayer > bilayer > multilayer graphene. This trend is rationalized quantitatively through the development of rate theory, using the Schmickler-Newns-Anderson model Hamiltonian for ET, with the explicit incorporation of electrostatic interactions in the double layer, and parameterized using constant potential density functional theory calculations. The ET mechanism is predominantly adiabatic; the addition of subsequent graphene layers increases the contact potential, producing an increase in the effective barrier to ET at the electrode/electrolyte interface.

. The two up quarks and the single down quark that comprise the proton in the simplest picture account only for a few per cent of the proton mass, the bulk of which is in the form of quark kinetic and potential energy and gluon energy from the strong force
. An essential feature of this force, as described by quantum chromodynamics, is its ability to create matter-antimatter quark pairs inside the proton that exist only for a very short time. Their fleeting existence makes the antimatter quarks within protons difficult to study, but their existence is discernible in reactions in which a matter-antimatter quark pair annihilates. In this picture of quark-antiquark creation by the strong force, the probability distributions as a function of momentum for the presence of up and down antimatter quarks should be nearly identical, given that their masses are very similar and small compared to the mass of the proton
. Here we provide evidence from muon pair production measurements that these distributions are considerably different, with more abundant down antimatter quarks than up antimatter quarks over a wide range of momenta. These results are expected to revive interest in several proposed mechanisms for the origin of this antimatter asymmetry in the proton that had been disfavoured by previous results
, and point to future measurements that can distinguish between these mechanisms.

In this multicentre study, we examined 60 cases of Type II enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) from the Asia-Pacific region by histological review, immunohistochemistry and molecular ...techniques. Patients were mostly adult males (median age: 58 years, male:female 2.6:1), presenting with abdominal pain (60%), intestinal perforation (40%) and weight loss (28%). None had a history of coeliac disease and the median survival was only 7 months. Histologically, these tumours could be divided into (i) central tumour zone comprising a monotonous population of neoplastic lymphocytes, (ii) peripheral zone featuring stunted villi and morphologically atypical lymphocytes showing epitheliotropism, and (iii) distant mucosa with normal villous architecture and cytologically normal intra-epithelial lymphocytes (IELs). Characterized by extensive nuclear expression of Megakaryocyte-associated tyrosine kinase (MATK) (87%) and usually a CD8(+)CD56(+) (88%) cytotoxic phenotype, there was frequent aberrant expression of CD20 (24%). T-cell receptor (TCR) expression was silent or not evaluable in 40% but of the remainder, there was predominant expression of TCRαβ over TCRγδ (1.6:1). In keeping with the normal ratio of IEL subsets, CD8(+) cases showed predominant CD8αα homodimer expression (77%), regardless of TCR lineage. These tumours constitute a distinct entity from classical EATL, and the pathology may reflect tumour progression from IEL precursors, remnants of which are often seen in the distant mucosa.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a clinical diagnosis characterized by left ventricular or biventricular dilation and impaired contraction that is not explained by abnormal loading conditions (for ...example, hypertension and valvular heart disease) or coronary artery disease. Mutations in several genes can cause DCM, including genes encoding structural components of the sarcomere and desmosome. Nongenetic forms of DCM can result from different aetiologies, including inflammation of the myocardium due to an infection (mostly viral); exposure to drugs, toxins or allergens; and systemic endocrine or autoimmune diseases. The heterogeneous aetiology and clinical presentation of DCM make a correct and timely diagnosis challenging. Echocardiography and other imaging techniques are required to assess ventricular dysfunction and adverse myocardial remodelling, and immunological and histological analyses of an endomyocardial biopsy sample are indicated when inflammation or infection is suspected. As DCM eventually leads to impaired contractility, standard approaches to prevent or treat heart failure are the first-line treatment for patients with DCM. Cardiac resynchronization therapy and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators may be required to prevent life-threatening arrhythmias. In addition, identifying the probable cause of DCM helps tailor specific therapies to improve prognosis. An improved aetiology-driven personalized approach to clinical care will benefit patients with DCM, as will new diagnostic tools, such as serum biomarkers, that enable early diagnosis and treatment.

Adopting the method of weighted residuals, the new models are obtained by minimizing the residuals of the horizontal momentum equations with either the Galerkin method or the subdomain method. These models’ linear and nonlinear water wave properties are investigated. The new models are implemented numerically. A hierarchy of numerical models with different degree of polynomial approximation is developed and checked against several benchmarked experiments and a new set of experiments of self-focusing wave groups. For both the Galerkin and subdomain models, excellent agreements are observed for both the free surface elevations and the velocity profiles. The new models are superior to the existing Boussinesq-type models for their applicability to a wide range of physical scenarios, including the interactions between a wave package of multiple frequency components and a linearly sheared current. The new Galerkin models have similar characteristics and accuracy as the Green–Naghdi models, but the new models are more efficient computationally. Finally, for the same degree of polynomial approximation the subdomain models perform better than the Galerkin models and require less computational time.
