Microplastics have received growing attention as carriers of organic pollutants in the water environment. To better understand the contribution of hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen-bonding ...interaction, π-π interaction and electrostatic interaction on the adsorption of hydrophilic compounds on microplastics and their adsorption behavior in natural waters, polyethylene terephthalate (PET, <150 μm) was used as an adsorbent and 4-chlorophenol (MCP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) were used as adsorbates. The results of batch adsorption experiments showed that chlorophenols (CPs) reached adsorption sites of PET through film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. pH greatly affected the adsorption capacity. Hydrophobic interaction was the main adsorption mechanism of undissociated CPs on PET. Hydrogen-bonding interaction was also an adsorption mechanism between undissociated CPs and PET, and the contribution of hydrogen-bonding interaction to adsorption decreased with the increase of chlorine content. Meanwhile, the increase of chlorine content was favorable to the hydrophobic interaction between undissociated CPs and PET. However, higher chlorine content CPs with lower pKa values tended to dissociate at neutral pH condition and resulted in stronger electrostatic repulsion with PET. The increase of solution ionic strength and fulvic acid content negatively affected the adsorption of DCP and TCP on PET, but did not show significant impacts on MCP adsorption. Similarly, the adsorption capacity obtained using Taihu lake water and Bohai seawater as matrices was much lower than that using laboratory water for both DCP and TCP, while the adsorption coefficient (Kd) of MCP remained at approximately 10.6 L/kg to 11.4 L/kg in the three different solution matrices. The Kd values exhibited using natural water matrices consistently followed the order of DCP > MCP > TCP. This study provides insights into the fate of CPs in the presence of microplastics and suggests that the potential risks posed by CPs and microplastics to aqueous ecosystems merit further investigation.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread widely. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic changes in peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets in adult patients with COVID-19.
The electronic medical records were reviewed. Data including demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, comorbidities, laboratory data, and radiological examinations of 435 hospitalized COVID-19 patients with a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 viral infection were extracted and analyzed retrospectively. Lymphocyte subset counts at each week after the onset of the illness were compared with those of the other weeks of illness and with those of control individuals.
The various lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD19+, and CD16/56+) were below the normal ranges at 1 week after the onset of illness, reaching a nadir during the second week. They increased gradually during the third week and returned to normal levels in the fifth week, but were still lower than those of the healthy controls. The CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ counts were significantly lower in patients with severe disease compared to those with non-severe disease, and in patients who died compared to those who recovered.
This research indicates that the levels of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+) are associated with disease progression and severity, and with the prognosis in patients with COVID-19. Dynamic monitoring of human immune function is one of the indicators for evaluating the severity of disease and the prognosis of COVID-19 patients, and is useful for formulating appropriate treatment strategies.

All-inorganic halide perovskites have become one of the most prospective materials for lightening and display technology due to their color-tunable and narrow-band emission. Herein, we have systematically studied the effects of organic amines with different hydrocarbon chain length on the optical properties and morphology as well as the crystal structure of colloidal CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs), which were synthesized in the presence of oleic acid (OA) and organic amines by using a simple hot-injection approach. The hydrocarbon chain length has shown an independent correlation to the morphology and crystal structure of the as-obtained CsPbBr3 NCs at 160°C, but their optical properties can be affected to some extent. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the CsPbBr3 NCs synthesized in the presence of organic amines with long carbon chain length are generally in the range of 55–80% for different reaction time, but the PLQYs of less than 20% are obtained for the products synthesized in the presence of octylamine (OTAm) with short carbon chain length. The effects of the reaction temperature on the optical properties, size and crystal structure of the CsPbBr3 NCs synthesized in the presence of cetylamine (CTAm) are studied. Interestingly, some nanoplates also appear in these CsPbBr3 NCs obtained at relatively low temperatures (120 and 140°C), which have a strong tendency to self-assemble into face-to-face nanostructures. Such a similar self-assembly behavior is also observed in the product synthesized in the presence of oleylamine (OLAm), but only flat nanoplates are observed in the products in the presence of OTAm at 120°C. The results indicate that the lower reaction temperature and hydrocarbon chain length of the organic ligands play a significant role in the self-assembly of CsPbBr3 NCs. This work opens up an alternative approach to controllable-synthesis of perovskite NCs through varying the carbon chain length of organic surfactants, and enlightens the fabrication of different nanostructures via self-assembly methods for further optoelectronic applications.

Immunotherapy has moved to the forefront of modern oncologic treatment in the past few decades. Various forms of immunotherapy currently are emerging, including oncolytic viruses. In this therapy, ...viruses are engineered to selectively propagate in tumor cells and reduce toxicity for non-neoplastic tissues. Adenovirus is one of the most frequently employed oncolytic viruses because of its capacity in tumor cell lysis and immune response stimulation. Upregulation of immunostimulatory signals induced by oncolytic adenoviruses (OAds) might significantly remove local immune suppression and amplify antitumor immune responses. Existing genetic engineering technology allows us to design OAds with increasingly better tumor tropism, selectivity, and antitumor efficacy. Several promising strategies to modify the genome of OAds have been applied: capsid modifications, small deletions in the pivotal viral genes, insertion of tumor-specific promoters, and addition of immunostimulatory transgenes. OAds armed with tumor-associated antigen (TAA) transgenes as cancer vaccines provide additional therapeutic strategies to trigger tumor-specific immunity. Furthermore, the combination of OAds and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) increases clinical benefit as evidence shown in completed and ongoing clinical trials, especially in the combination of OAds with antiprogrammed death 1/programed death ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) therapy. Despite remarkable antitumor potency, oncolytic adenovirus immunotherapy is confronted with tough challenges such as antiviral immune response and obstruction of tumor microenvironment (TME). In this review, we focus on genomic modification strategies of oncolytic adenoviruses and applications of OAds in cancer immunotherapy.

The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global public health emergency.
204 elderly patients (≥60 years old) diagnosed with COVID-19 in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from January 31st to February 20th, 2020 were included in this study. Clinical endpoint was in-hospital death.
Of the 204 patients, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were the most common coexisting conditions. 76 patients died in the hospital. Multivariate analysis showed that dyspnea (hazards ratio (HR) 2.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.414–3.517; p < 0.001), older age (HR 1.1, 95% CI 1.070–1.123; p < 0.001), neutrophilia (HR 4.4, 95% CI 1.310–15.061; p = 0.017) and elevated ultrasensitive cardiac troponin I (HR 3.9, 95% CI 1.471–10.433; p = 0.006) were independently associated with death.
Although so far the overall mortality of COVID-19 is relatively low, the mortality of elderly patients is much higher. Early diagnosis and supportive care are of great importance for the elderly patients of COVID-19.

Multinary copper-based chalcogenide nanocrystals (NCs) as light-driven photocatalysts have attracted extensive research interest due to their great potential for generating sustainable energy without ...causing environmental concerns. However, systematic studies on the growth mechanism and related photocatalytic activities involving different valent metal ions (either M2+ or N3+) as foreign cations and monoclinic Cu1.94S NCs as the ‘parent lattice’ have rarely been carried out. In this work, we report an effective seed-mediated method for the synthesis of heterostructured Cu1.94S–MS NCs (M = Zn, Cd and Mn) and alloyed CuNS2 NCs (N = In and Ga). A typical cation exchange process took place prior to the growth of heterostructured NCs, while further inter-cation diffusion occurred only for the alloyed NCs. When compared with Cu1.94S NCs, all the heterostructured Cu1.94S–MS NCs and CuGaS2 NCs showed enhanced photocatalytic activities toward hydrogen production by water splitting, owing to their tailored optical band gaps and energy level alignments. Although optically favored, CuInS2 ANCs were not comparable to others due to their low conduction band minimum for the reduction of H2O to H2.
Urban outdoor space is an important activity place for residents, and its thermal environment directly affects residents’ quality of life and physical and mental health. Due to global climate change ...and the acceleration of urbanization, the outdoor thermal comfort of urban residents has seriously declined, causing more and more scholars to pay attention to this problem and to carry out research. This paper summarizes the development history and evaluation principles of outdoor thermal comfort evaluation indices and sorts out the methods for achieving outdoor thermal comfort. This paper reviews the effects of urban climate, local microclimate, physiological, psychological, social, and cultural factors on outdoor thermal comfort. In addition, strategies for improving thermal comfort in urban outdoor spaces are discussed from the aspects of urban geometry, vegetation, surface materials, and water bodies. Finally, the existing problems and development directions of current urban outdoor space thermal comfort studies are pointed out. This review paper can provide a reference for the scientific planning and construction of urban outdoor spaces to improve people’s thermal comfort.
Platelets are small anucleate cells that circulate in the blood and form thrombi. Tumor-educated platelets are the platelets derived from cancer patients. Although many have reported that ...tumor-educated platelets are associated with cancer-associated thrombosis, their function in this process is poorly understood. Here we first collect the clinical data from 100 different cancer patients, showing that cancer patients are in a hypercoagulable state. Our experiment shows that tumor-educated platelets from melanoma-burdened mouse models can migrate faster and longer, forming more clots (thrombus). However, the plasma from tumor mice can inhibit platelet migration. The RNA sequence profile of tumor-educated platelets shows that many genes associated with cell migration and cell skeleton expressed significantly higher. Our research offers a new insight into the tumor-educated platelets to better understand the thrombus formation.
Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) maintain lifetime whole blood hematopoiesis through self-renewal and differentiation. To sustain HSC stemness, most HSCs reside in a quiescence state, which is ...affected by diverse cellular stress and intracellular signal transduction. How HSCs accommodate those challenges to preserve lifetime capacity remains elusive. Here we show that Pax transactivation domain-interacting protein (PTIP) is required for preserving hematopoietic stem cell quiescence via regulating lysosomal activity. Using a genetic knockout mouse model to specifically delete Ptip in HSCs, we find that loss of Ptip promotes HSCs exiting quiescence, and results in functional exhaustion of HSCs. Mechanistically, Ptip loss increases lysosomal degradative activity of HSCs. Restraining lysosomal activity restores the quiescence and repopulation potency of Ptip-/- HSCs. Additionally, PTIP interacts with SMAD2/3 and mediates TGFβ signaling-induced HSC quiescence. Overall, our work uncovers a key role of PTIP in sustaining HSC quiescence via regulating lysosomal activity.
