There is still no systematized evidence in the literature regarding the combination of curcumin to improve the effects of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on complex oral biofilms. Therefore, the objective of this review was to systematically assess the antimicrobial effect of curcumin-mediated aPDT on the vitality of biofilms of microorganisms Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans.
The addressed focused question was: “What are the effects of curcumin-mediated antimicrobial therapy on the biofilm viability of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans in vitro models?” A literature search was conducted in the electronic databases Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Bireme up to April 2019. In vitro studies evaluating the effect of curcumin-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy on S. mutans and C. albicans biofilms were included.
From 95 citations, 11 full-text articles were screened and 6 studies were included in this review. Because of the heterogeneity observed in the studies selected, meta-analysis was not possible.
The in vitro studies indicate the potential use of curcumin-mediated aPDT to inactivate microorganisms; Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. This survey should be viewed as a starting point for further examinations using standardized parameters to enhance outcomes.

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) show deficit in thermal balance during physical exercise.

Sixteen-week-old male Wistar rats and SHR were allocated into four groups: control Wistar rats (C-WIS), trained Wistar (T-WIS), control SHR (C-SHR) and trained SHR (T-SHR). Treadmill exercise training was performed for 12 weeks. Blood pressure, resting heart rate and total exercise time was measured before and after the physical exercise program. After the exercise program, a temperature sensor was implanted in the abdominal cavity, and the animals subjected to an acute exercise protocol, during which internal body temperature, tail skin temperature and oxygen consumption until fatigue were continuously recorded. Mechanical efficiency (ME), work, heat dissipation threshold and sensitivity were calculated. Statistical significance was set at 5%.
Physical training and hypertension had no effect on thermal balance during physical exercise. Compared with C-WIS, the T-WIS group showed higher heat production, which was counterbalanced by higher heat dissipation. Hypertensive rats showed lower ME than normotensive rats, which was not reversed by the physical training.
Low-intensity physical training did not affect thermal balance in SHR subjected to acute exercise.

Interference from herbicide-resistant weeds is one of the biggest impediments in soybean crops. The aim was to evaluate the spatial dynamics and weed control under glyphosate and glufosinate ...combinations before soybean seeding. The experiment was conducted in a striped arrangement with thirteen treatments and seven replicates. The treatments consisted in no-treatment, glyphosate, glyphosate + fomesafen, glyphosate + saflufenacil, glyphosate + diclosulam, glyphosate + imazetapir, glyphosate + flumioxazine, glyphosate + carfentrazone-ethyl, glyphosate + imazetapyr + flumioxazine, glyphosate + glufosinate, glyphosate + flumioxazine + carfentrazone, glufosinate + saflufenacil, glufosinate + flumioxazine. The weed spatial dynamic was analyzed for geostatistics methods, while weed control by conventional and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) methods. We identified twenty weed species, representing eighteen different genera and fourteen botanical families. It's worth noting that eudicotyledonous species were the dominant group, primarily characterized by an annual life cycle and sexual reproduction. The utilization of precision agricultural methods proved highly effective in conducting weed surveys before soybean seeding. Using glyphosate alone is not recommended in fields with a history of reactive management with this herbicide. Alternatively, combining glyphosate and glufosinate with Protox-inhibitors showed outstanding control efficacy against glyphosate-resistant or glyphosate-tolerant weeds, Cenchrus eChinatus, Spermacoce verticillata and Turnera subulata.
Few studies have reported long-term outcomes of globus pallidus internus (GPi) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD). The authors aimed to investigate long-term outcomes of ...bilateral GPi DBS for 5 years and beyond for PD patients.
The authors retrospectively analyzed the clinical outcomes in 65 PD patients treated with bilateral GPi DBS at a single center. The outcome measures of motor symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) included the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39). Scores at baseline were compared with those at 1, 3, 5, and 6-8 years after implantation using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests with α correction.
GPi DBS significantly improved the off-medication UPDRS III total scores, UPDRS IV, and dyskinesia score at 1 year when compared with baseline (all p < 0.001). The off- and on-medication tremor scores, UPDRS IV, and dyskinesia scores showed moderate and sustained improvement (the ranges of the mean percentage improvement at each time point were 61%-75%, 30%-80%, 29%-40%, and 40%-65%, respectively) despite lacking statistical significance at long-term follow-up with diminishing sample sizes. The off-medication UPDRS III total scores did not show significant improvement at 5 years or later, primarily because of worsening in rigidity, akinesia, speech, gait, and postural stability scores. The on-medication UPDRS III total scores also worsened over time, with a significant worsening at 6-8 years when compared with baseline (p = 0.008). The HRQoL analyses based on the PDQ-39 revealed significant improvement in the activities of daily living and discomfort domains at 1 year (p = 0.003 and 0.006, respectively); however, all the domains showed gradual worsening at the later time points without reaching statistical significance. At 3 years, the communication domain showed significant worsening compared with baseline scores (p = 0.002).
GPi DBS in PD patients in this single-center cohort was associated with sustained long-term benefits in the off- and on-medication tremor score and motor complications. HRQoL and the cardinal motor symptoms other than tremor may worsen gradually in the long term. When counseling patients, it is important to recognize that benefits in tremor and dyskinesia are expected to be most persistent following bilateral GPi DBS implantation.
The electro‐optical characteristics of deep ultraviolet light‐emitting diodes (DUV LEDs) emitting at 265 nm and grown on AlN/sapphire templates with different threading dislocation densities, i.e., ...high‐temperature annealed (HTA) AlN, epitaxially laterally overgrown (ELO) AlN, and HTA‐ELO AlN are analyzed. The external quantum efficiency of each individual device is separated into maximum radiative recombination efficiency, carrier injection efficiency, and light extraction efficiency. This is achieved by combining an ABC‐model‐based fit of the current‐dependent external quantum efficiency together with calibrated Monte Carlo ray‐tracing simulations. A maximum radiative recombination efficiency between 50% and 60% is estimated for DUV LEDs grown on ELO and HTA‐ELO AlN/sapphire, whereas the values for devices grown on HTA AlN/sapphire are around 45%. The extracted radiative recombination efficiency does not scale with the measured threading dislocation density (TDD), even when accounting for the inhomogeneous TDD in the AlN base layers. This discrepancy is attributed to the formation of dislocation half‐loops introduced by additional compressive strain caused by the HTA process and may result in the formation of additional nonradiative recombination centers in the AlGaN multi‐quantum well region. In addition, the carrier injection efficiency values ranging from 45% to 55% are determined for devices grown on all three templates.
Herein, 265 nm deep ultraviolet light‐emitting diodes (DUV LEDs) grown on three different AlN/sapphire templates are investigated. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) of each individual device is separated into maximum radiative recombination (RRE), carrier injection (CIE), and light extraction efficiency. The results show that for DUV LEDs, CIE is ≈50% and limits EQE to a similar extent as RRE.
