This paper provides an overview of narrative based inquiry with attention to tensions that arise among the universal and contextual experiences of personal narratives throughout the research ...endeavor. Drawing from our own research experiences, we describe a range of methodological decisions intending to demonstrate the evolution of reflexivity over time and the re-storying process that shapes our ongoing qualitative researcher identity development. We will conclude with a discussion of how these experiences offer opportunities for enhancing our understanding of constructive meaning-making processes and in turn remind us of the importance of developing skills as reflexive practitioners.

Using an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design, we investigated the relationship between cultural humility (CH) and cultural competence (CC), two concepts that have been widely ...discussed in the multicultural counseling literature. We first adopted a thematic analysis to explore how 14 experienced counselor educators perceived the CH–CC relationship and identified three preliminary themes. Then, we utilized quantitative analyses to test the hypotheses derived from the qualitative themes, based on a sample of 434 adults who received mental health services. Both qualitative and quantitative results supported that CH and CC (a) share conceptual alignment; (b) emphasize on different aspects of counselor characteristics and behaviors in cultural contexts; and (c) both play an integral, yet slightly varied, role during the counseling process. We discuss implications regarding embracing CH and CC in the counseling practice, counselor educator, and future research on multicultural counseling.

A growing body of empirical literature has substantiated that cultural humility (CH) contributes meaningfully to a variety of therapeutic processes and outcomes. However, no study has concretely ...described how CH is linguistically and discursively enacted within therapeutic exchanges. Using interactional sociolinguistic discourse analysis, we explored the sociolinguistic strategies along with three dimensions of CH: (a) cultural teachability, (b) lack of cultural arrogance, and (c) relational orientation. Participants included six pairs of cross‐racial counseling dyads. Our analyses of the session and follow‐up interview transcripts yielded a range of sociolinguistic strategies (i.e., positioning, use of reinforcement, repetition, and use of pronouns) corresponding to the CH dimensions. We discuss clinical, research, and training implications.

Examination of the efficacy of clinical supervision has accrued limited evidence, partially due to lack of a clarity or consensus on what constitutes supervision outcomes. This not only leads to ...inconsistency across studies evaluating supervision outcomes but also falls short of providing guidance for clinical supervisors to systematically evaluate the efficacy of their work. We present a practitioner-oriented, evidence-informed, and pan-theoretical framework that connects a broad range of outcomes to the supervision process, including proximal, intermediate, and distal outcomes. We discuss how several practitioner-friendly instruments related to these outcomes can be incorporated into supervision practice and contribute to a more holistic assessment of supervision outcomes. We also discussed supervisory strategies, such as strategically attending to and balancing multiple levels of outcomes and incorporating a theoretical lens to our framework.

Researchers developed and initially validated a client-report measure of counselors' cultural humility, entitled the Cultural Humility and Enactment Scale (CHES). The sample includes 434 adults ...recruited from web-based surveys. Exploratory factor analyses were performed to examine the initial factor structure of the CHES. Bivariate correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine the convergent and discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity of the CHES. The results supported a 3-factor structure of the CHES, with excellent internal consistency reliability for both the full scale and factor scores. Evidence was found for the construct and predictive validity of the CHES scores.

Using a narratological framework, we examined how gender roles and stereotypes affect experiences of transgender and gender‐nonconforming college students. Six participants were interviewed about ...navigating their gender identity throughout college and adulthood. Four themes emerged: gendered attributes, within‐group differences, identity development, and experiences in counseling. Themes are discussed in light of humanistic literature, and implications are discussed.

There is an increasing body of evidence demonstrating the psychological and social challenges that afflict school-age children in sub-Saharan Africa. In spite of widespread calls to provide ...counselling and guidance services in schools, efforts at expanding these services remain fragmented and under-resourced. Grounded in both empirical and theoretical literature, this article calls for integration of counselling and guidance through a whole-school approach. Utilizing critical aspects of child and adolescent developmental theory, we summarize the current state of counselling and guidance in the region, evaluate attempts at integration, and propose adoption of a comprehensive guidance and counselling model into school curricula.

School guidance and counseling services in Uganda are limited, but are gradually gaining traction despite resource constraints. We conducted qualitative interviews with 22 counselors, school ...administrators, and government officials involved in secondary school counseling in the Kampala district to assess future needs. Interview data focused on three central domains: existing guidance and counseling efforts, barriers to providing effective services, and the future outlook of the profession. As school counseling gains support, counselors require new resources and training to support effective and sustainable practice. Future efforts must appeal to school and government leaders with a return on investment demonstrated through academic and broader student success.
