The meteorites Graves Nunataks (GRA) 06128 and 06129 are igneous meteorites dominated by oligoclase feldspar and have basaltic trachyandesite-like whole rock compositions. Formation of the GRA ...06128/9 meteorites as primary melts on an oxidized planetesimal has been previously proposed (Day et al. 2009a, 2012a; Gardner-Vandy et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2014). We show experimentally that anhydrous partial melting of an oxidized R chondrite at IW to IW+1 between 1120–1140°C produces melts of GRA 06128/9-like compositions: intermediate SiO2 and FeO concentrations that are enriched in volatile sodium. From a process perspective, GRA 06128/9-like magmas are complementary to partial melt residues such as olivine-rich brachinite and FeO-rich brachinite-like meteorites. Magmas of GRA 06128/9’s composition can be generated under equilibrium conditions, as demonstrated by MELTS modeling, but only at temperatures ∼1140°C. At lower degrees of partial melting liquids formed under equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions follow distinct compositional pathways to reach GRA 06128/9-like melts. For lower degrees of melting, the non-equilibrium trend more closely resembles GRA 06128/9’s composition. Phase abundance modeling indicates that GRA 06128/9-composition magmas form by 14–22% silicate melting of an oxidized R-chondrite. We conclude that GRA 06128/9-composition magmas can be generated at ∼1140°C from partial melting of an oxidized chondritic precursor under both non-equilibrium and equilibrium conditions.

The Dominion Range 2010 howardite pairing group contains an evolved lithic clast of dacite composition. The dacite contains an assemblage of plagioclase, quartz, and augite, with minor pigeonite, ...troilite, ilmenite, FeNi metal, K‐feldspar, and phosphates. Primary augite occurs as >1 mm oikocrysts enclosing plagioclase. Quartz is abundant, comprising approximately 30% of the clast. Textural and geochemical characteristics support the hypothesis that the dacite is a primary igneous lithology, and represents a partial melt of the eucritic crust. Numerical modeling (MELTS) suggests 10–20% partial melting of a Juvinas source could have produced the dacite lithology; quantitative trace element modeling further supports crustal partial melting as the magma source for the dacite. The dacite likely formed as evolved‐melt pockets, and thus represents a volumetrically minor lithology in the Vestan crust, although its formation provides direct support for a genetic relationship between Stannern and residual trend eucrites, and is the first identification of residual eucrite complementary melts. We propose the dacite clast is the first characterized sample of tertiary crust on Vesta.

We conducted a petrologic study of apatite within one LL chondrite, six R chondrites, and six CK chondrites. These data were combined with previously published apatite data from a broader range of ...chondrite meteorites to determine that chondrites host either chlorapatite or hydroxylapatite with ≤33 mol% F in the apatite X-site (unless affected by partial melting by impacts, which can cause F-enrichment of residual apatite). These data indicate that either fluorapatite was not a primary condensate from the solar nebula or that it did not survive lower temperature nebular processes and/or parent body processes. Bulk-rock Cl and F data from chondrites were used to determine that the solar system has a Cl/F ratio of 10.5 ± 1.0 (3σ). The Cl/F ratios of apatite from chondrites are broadly reflective of the solar system Cl/F value, indicating that apatite in chondrites is fluorine poor because the solar system has about an order of magnitude more Cl than F. The Cl/F ratio of the solar system was combined with known apatite-melt partitioning relationships for F and Cl to predict the range of apatite compositions that would form from a melt with a chondritic Cl/F ratio. This range of apatite compositions allowed for the development of a crude model to use apatite X-site compositions from achondrites (and chondrite melt rocks) to determine whether they derive from a volatile-depleted and/or differentiated source, albeit with important caveats that are detailed in the manuscript. This study further highlights the utility of apatite as a mineralogical tool to understand the origin of volatiles (including H2O) and the diversity of their associated geological processes throughout the history of our solar system, including at its nascent stage.
We describe petrographic, electron microprobe, and laser ablation ICP‐MS analyses of Mg‐rich harzburgite clasts in the Dominion Range 2010 howardites, and conclude that they are xenolithic samples of ...the vestan mantle. Key chemical and petrologic characteristics of these rocks provide tests for differentiation models. Our results indicate the mantle of Vesta formed through variable degrees of partial melting, which left behind a harzburgite and possibly dunite residuum. The Mg‐rich clasts are composed of orthopyroxene and olivine, with minor clinopyroxene, FeNi metal, and distinctive pyroxene–chromite symplectites. We use mineral chemistry to demonstrate the absence of a genetic link between diogenites and the Mg‐rich harzburgites. We propose a secondary origin for the formation of symplectites: interaction of silicate and metallic melts during primordial differentiation and core formation. The occurrence of FeNi metal containing ~1.5 wt% Cr within the assemblage indicates a very reducing environment during mantle differentiation (≪IW). Our study suggests that Vesta did not experience complete melting early in its history, and instead supports the formation of a shallow magma ocean.

A number of meteorites contain evidence that rocky bodies formed and differentiated early in our solar system's history, and similar bodies likely contributed material to form the planets. These ...differentiated rocky bodies are expected to have mantles dominated by Mg-rich olivine, but direct evidence for such mantles beyond our own planet has been elusive. Here, we identify olivine fragments (Mg# = 80–92) in howardite meteorites. These Mg-rich olivine fragments do not correspond to an established lithology in the howardite–eucrite–diogenite (HED) meteorites, which are thought to be from the asteroid 4 Vesta; their occurrence in howardite breccias, combined with diagnostic oxygen three-isotope signatures and minor element chemistry, indicates they are vestan. The major element chemistry of these Mg-rich olivines suggests that they formed as mantle residues, in crustal layered intrusions, or in Mg-rich basalts. The trace element chemistry of these Mg-rich olivines supports an origin as mantle samples, but other formation scenarios could be possible. Interpreted as mantle samples, the range of Mg-rich olivine compositions indicates that Vesta's structure differs from that predicted by conventional models: Vesta has a chemically heterogeneous mantle that feeds serial magmatism. The range of olivine major element chemistries is consistent with models of an incompletely melted mantle such as in the model proposed by Wilson and Keil (2013) rather than a whole-mantle magma ocean for Vesta. Trace element chemistries of Mg-rich pyroxenes (Mg# = 85–92) provide support that some of these pyroxenes may represent initial fractional crystallization of mantle partial melts.

Quantifying the amounts of various igneous lithologies in Vesta’s crust allows the estimation of petrologic ratios that describe the asteroid’s global differentiation and subsequent magmatic history. ...The eucrite:diogenite (Euc:Diog) ratio measures the relative proportions of mafic and ultramafic components. The intrusive:extrusive (I:E) ratio assesses the effectiveness of magma ascent and eruption. We estimate these ratios by counting numbers and masses of eucrites, cumulate eucrites, and diogenites in the world’s meteorite collections, and by calculating their proportions as components of crustal polymict breccias (howardites) using chemical mixing diagrams and petrologic mapping of multiple thin sections. The latter two methods yield a Euc:Diog ratio of ∼2:1, although meteorite numbers and masses give slightly higher ratios. Surface lithologic maps compiled from spectra of Dawn spacecraft instruments (VIR and GRaND) yield Euc:Diog ratios that bracket estimates of Euc:Diog from the meteorites. The I:E ratios from HEDs lie between 0.5–2.1:1, due to uncertainties in identifying cumulate eucrite. Gravity mapping of Vesta by the Dawn spacecraft supports the existence of diogenite plutons in the crust. Quantifying the proportion of high-density diogenitic crust in the gravity map yields I:E ratios of 0.8-1:2:1, values which are bracketed by calculations based on HEDs. The I:E ratio for Vesta is lower than for Earth and Mars, consistent with physical modeling of asteroid-size bodies. Nevertheless, it indicates a significant role for pluton emplacement during the formation of Vesta’s crust. These results are inconsistent with simple differentiation models that produce the crust by crystallization of a global magma ocean, unless residual melts are extracted into crustal magma chambers.

Regolithic howardites are analogs for the surface materials of asteroid 4 Vesta, recently mapped by the Dawn spacecraft. Rigorously evaluating pairing of howardites recovered in 1995 in the Grosvenor ...Mountains (GRO 95), Antarctica, enables an examination of a larger, more representative regolith sample. Previous work on two of the howardites studied here concluded that GRO 95602 and GRO 95535 are solar wind‐rich surface regolith samples and that they are not paired with each other, leading to uncertainty regarding pairing relationships between the other GRO 95 howardites. Based on petrology, cosmic‐ray exposure history, and terrestrial age, four GRO 95 howardites are paired. The paired howardites (GRO 95534, 95535, 95574, 95581) were from a meteoroid with radius of 10–15 cm, a preatmospheric size comparable to that of Kapoeta, the largest known regolithic howardite. The paired GRO 95 howardites contain clasts of at least 18 separate HED lithologies, providing evidence they were assembled from diverse source materials. The total eucrite:diogenite mixing ratio (ratio of all eucrite lithologies to all diogenite lithologies) in the paired GRO 95 howardites is ~2:1. Petrographically determined basaltic eucrite:cumulate eucrite ratios in regolithic howardites, studied here and previously, vary more widely than total eucrite:diogenite ratios. Relative to eucritic pyroxene, plagioclase is depleted in these howardites, which provides evidence that plagioclase is preferentially comminuted in the vestan regolith. The extent of plagioclase depletion could be an indicator of regolith maturity.

Ancient, SiO2‐rich achondrites have previously been proposed to have formed by disequilibrium partial melting of chondrites. Here, we test the alternative hypothesis that these achondrites formed by ...fractional crystallization of impact melts of Rumuruti (R) chondrites. We identified two new melt clasts in R chondrites, one in Pecora Escarpment (PCA) 91241 and one in LaPaz Icefield (LAP) 031275. We analyzed major, minor, and trace element concentrations, as well as oxygen isotopes, of these two clasts and a third one that had been previously recognized (Bischoff et al. 2011) as an impact melt in Dar al Gani (DaG) 013. The melt clast in PCA 91241 is an R chondrite impact melt closely resembling the one previously recognized in DaG 013. The melt clast in LAP 031275 has an L chondrite provenance. We show that SiO2‐rich melts could form from the mesostases of R chondrite impact melts. However, their CI‐normalized rare earth element patterns are flat, whereas those of ancient SiO2‐rich achondrites (Day et al. 2012; Srinivasan et al. 2018) and those of disequilibrium partial melts of chondrites (Feldstein et al. 2001) have positive Eu anomalies from preferential melting of plagioclase. Thus, we conclude that ancient SiO2‐rich achondrites were probably formed by disequilibrium partial melting (due to an internal heat source on their parent bodies), rather than from impact melts.

Volatile-rich and typically oxidized carbonaceous chondrites, such as CV and CM chondrites, potentially respond to impacts differently than do other chondritic materials. Understanding impact melting ...of carbonaceous chondrites has been hampered by the dearth of recognized impact melt samples. In this study we identify five carbonaceous chondrite impact melt clasts in three host meteorites: a CV3red chondrite, a CV3oxA chondrite, and a regolithic howardite. The impact melt clasts in these meteorites respectively formed from CV3red chondrite, CV3oxA chondrite, and CM chondrite protoliths. We identified these impact melt clasts and interpreted their precursors based on their texture, mineral chemistry, silicate bulk elemental composition, and in the case of the CM chondrite impact melt clast, in situ measurement of oxygen three-isotope signatures in olivine. These impact melts typically contain euhedral–subhedral olivine microphenocrysts, sometimes with relict cores, in glassy groundmasses. Based on petrography and Raman spectroscopy, four of the impact melt clasts exhibit evidence for volatile loss: these melt clasts either contain vesicles or are depleted in H2O relative to their precursors. Volatile loss (i.e., H2O) may have reduced the redox state of the CM chondrite impact melt clast. The clasts that formed from the more oxidized precursors (CV3oxA and CM chondrites) exhibit phase and bulk silicate elemental compositions consistent with higher intrinsic oxygen fugacities relative to the clast that formed from a more reduced precursor (CV3red chondrite). The mineral chemistries and assemblages of the CV and CM chondrite impact melt clasts identified here provide a template for recognizing carbonaceous chondrite impact melts on the surfaces of asteroids.
