Due to their antimicrobial properties, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in a wide range of consumer products that includes topical wound dressings, coatings for biomedical devices, and ...food-packaging to extend the shelf-life. Despite their beneficial antimicrobial effects, developmental exposure to such AgNPs may lead to gut dysbiosis and long-term health consequences in exposed offspring. AgNPs can cross the placenta and blood-brain-barrier to translocate in the brain of offspring. The underlying hypothesis tested in the current study was that developmental exposure of male and female mice to AgNPs disrupts the microbiome-gut-brain axis. To examine for such effects, C57BL6 female mice were exposed orally to AgNPs at a dose of 3 mg/kg BW or vehicle control 2 weeks prior to breeding and throughout gestation. Male and female offspring were tested in various mazes that measure different behavioral domains, and the gut microbial profiles were surveyed from 30 through 120 days of age. Our study results suggest that developmental exposure results in increased likelihood of engaging in repetitive behaviors and reductions in resident microglial cells. Echo-MRI results indicate increased body fat in offspring exposed to AgNPs exhibit. Coprobacillus spp., Mucispirillum spp., and Bifidobacterium spp. were reduced, while Prevotella spp., Bacillus spp., Planococcaceae, Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., and Ruminococcus spp. were increased in those developmentally exposed to NPs. These bacterial changes were linked to behavioral and metabolic alterations. In conclusion, developmental exposure of AgNPs results in long term gut dysbiosis, body fat increase and neurobehavioral alterations in offspring.

We perform a model-independent and comprehensive test on the cosmic distance duality relation (CDDR) by combining the latest observations of strong gravitational lensing (SGL) including a total of ...161 well-measured systems from several surveys and observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), i.e., the joint light-curve analysis of SNe Ia and the Pantheon SNe Ia. We parameterize the CDDR in the form of , and also consider general lens mass models including the dependence on the lens redshift and surface mass density. First, we update tests using the new SGL and the two SNe Ia data sets for the singular isothermal sphere model. The constraint results suggest a moderate tension with the CDDR using the Pantheon SN Ia with a slightly negative 0. We find that 0 deviates significantly from the CDDR at more than the 3 level if the lens mass model depends on redshift. Supplementary tests show that the error from aperture correction and the parameterization method of the CDDR can hardly justify the deviation. Several of the models investigated show some evidence for deviations from the CDDR. However, there is a significant scatter in the inferred level of the CDDR violation, depending on the model describing the population of strong lenses. This variance is too large for us to conclude yet that the CDDR is violated and needs further investigation and future measurements to be verified.
The alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) involves the coupling of adsorbed hydrogen (Had) and hydroxyl (OHad) species and is thus orders of magnitude slower than that in acid media. According ...to the Sabatier principle, developing electrocatalysts with appropriate binding energy for both intermediates is vital to accelerating the HOR though it is still challenging. Herein, we propose an unconventional bilateral compressive strained Ni–Ir interface (Ni–Ir(BCS)) as efficient synergistic HOR sites. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that the bilateral compressive strain effect leads to the appropriate adsorption for both Had and OHad, enabling their coupling thermodynamically spontaneous and kinetically preferential. Such Ni–Ir(BCS) is experimentally achieved by embedding sub-nanometer Ir clusters in graphene-loaded high-density Ni nanocrystals (Ni–Ir(BCS)/G). As predicted, it exhibits a HOR mass activity of 7.95 and 2.88 times those of commercial Ir/C and Pt/C together with much enhanced CO tolerance, respectively, ranking among the most active state-of-the-art HOR catalysts. These results provide new insights into the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts involving coordinated adsorption and activation of multiple reactants.

As the most serious complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA), periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) often leads to disastrous consequences. An accurate preoperative diagnosis plays a significant ...role in saving prostheses and optimizing treatment outcomes. Through this retrospective case-control study, we aimed to investigate the potential of superoxide dismutase (SOD) as a novel serum biomarker in the diagnosis of PJI.
We conducted a retrospective review of all patients who underwent TKA and received adequate follow-ups in our hospital from June 2015 to December 2021. A total of 50 patients were enrolled in the PJI group based on the 2018 International Consensus Meeting (ICM) criteria. Besides that, we enrolled 100 patients who underwent TKA in the same period and had a good postoperative course in the control group. Patient characteristics, comorbidities, laboratory results (serum, synovial, and microbial), and intraoperative findings (purulence and histopathology) were documented and compared by univariate analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to determine the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic performance.
The median serum SOD level in the PJI and control group was 135.95 ± 24.47 U/ml (IQR, 111.85-158.30 U/ml) and 173.83 ± 13.9 U/ml (IQR,162.83-183.5 U/ml) (p < 0.05), respectively. With the calculated cutoff of SOD at 149.5U/L, the area under the ROC curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV), were 0.919, 0.72, 0.97, 0.923, and 0.874, respectively. In subgroup analysis, the specificity of SOD in diagnosing culture-negative PJI remained extremely high (0.98). Combined diagnosis of serum SOD and C-reactive protein (CRP) made AUC increase to 0.972.
Serum SOD showed great potential in the diagnosis of PJI.

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction driven by renewable energy has become a promising approach to rebalance the carbon cycle. Atomically dispersed transition metals anchored on N-doped carbon supports ...(M-N-C) have been considered as the most attractive catalysts to catalyze CO2 to CO. However, the sluggish kinetics of M-N-C limits the large-scale application of this type of catalyst. Here, it is found that the introduction of single atomic Mn–N auxiliary sites could effectively buffer the locally generated OH− on the catalytic interface of the single-atomic Ni–N–C sites, thus accelerating proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) steps to enhance the CO2 electroreduction to CO. The constructed diatomic Ni/Mn–N–C catalysts show a CO faradaic efficiency of 96.6% and partial CO current density of 13.3 mA cm−2 at −0.76 V vs. RHE, outperforming that of monometallic single-atomic Ni–N–C or Mn–N–C counterparts. The results suggest that constructing synergistic catalytic sites to regulate the surface local microenvironment might be an attractive strategy for boosting CO2 electroreduction to value-added products.

Introduction
At present, a variety of molecular detection methods are obtained to diagnose thalassemia accurately. Although exome sequencing or specific panels have been widely used in clinical ...diagnosis of genetic diseases, the positive rate is about 25%‐30%. Because the detection range is limited to exons and splice sites, and the read length is usually 100‐150 bp, there are limitations in the detection of globin gene clusters with pseudogenes.
Methods
In this study, seven thalassemia patients were selected to perform whole‐genome sequencing (WGS) with long read at 400 bp to make accurate detection for thalassemia deletions. And we used PCR and Sanger sequencing to confirm the gene deletions in the patients.
Results
WGS analysis detected a rare 172 kb deletion on the α‐globin gene cluster at chr16: 57 009‐330 001, 19 kb deletion at chr16: 215 396‐234 699, 11 kb deletion at chr16:220 861‐231 981; and 27 kb deletion on the β‐globin gene deletion at chr11: 5 222 878‐5 250 288, 21.4 kb deletion at chr11: 5 236 361‐5 257 771, 78.9 kb deletion at chr11: 5 191 121‐5 270 050. All the seven patients carried heterozygous deletions, including three in α‐gene cluster, three in β‐gene cluster, and one in both globin clusters.
Conclusion
Our results indicate that long‐read WGS will be beneficial to the diagnosis of genetic diseases with pseudogenes or highly duplicated sequences and will enable clinical geneticists to inform high‐risk couples and provide prenatal diagnosis.
