Abstract Objective: To investigate the involvement of angiogenesis markers in very early arthritis patients and their relevance to predict further joint destruction. Methods: Levels of Vascular ...Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), and soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) were measured by ELISA in serum samples from 310 patients having polyarthritis, evolving for less than 6 months (VErA cohort). Each angiogenesis marker was measured at baseline and one year later. X-rays of hands and feet were carried out at inclusion and after 1 year and read using the van der Heidje-modified Sharp method. Results: At baseline and after 1 year, VEGF levels were correlated with clinical and biological parameters of inflammation. We also observed a positive correlation between sFlt-1 levels and biological inflammation (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR): r = 0.17, p = 0.006; C Reactive Protein: r = 0.14, p = 0.02). Angiopoietin-1 levels were correlated with ESR ( r = 0.12, p = 0.04). Interestingly, only VEGF levels measured at baseline were correlated with Disease Activity Score measured 1 year later. Relationship between angiogenesis markers and radiographic progression was also evaluated. VEGF and Ang-1 levels measured at inclusion were related with Sharp score after one year (VEGF: r = 0.21, p < 0.001; Ang-1: r = 0.24, p < 0.001; Spearman's test). Moreover, VEGF levels were higher in patients with radiographic progression ( p = 0.002). Conclusion: Serum concentrations of VEGF, sFlt-1 and angiopoietin-1 were correlated to parameters of inflammation and to bone destruction in early arthritis. These results contribute to demonstrate that angiogenesis reflects disease severity and angiogenesis markers might become a new useful tool to evaluate disease activity and to estimate outcome for patients with inflammatory arthritis.

For several transition disks (TDs), dark regions interpreted as shadows have been observed in scattered light imaging and are hypothesized to originate from misalignments between distinct disk ...regions. We aim to investigate the presence of misalignments in TDs. We study the inner disk geometries of 20 well-known transition disks with VLTI/GRAVITY observations and use complementary \(^{12}\)CO and \(^{13}\)CO molecular line data from ALMA to derive the orientation of the outer disk regions. We fit simple models to the GRAVITY data to derive the inner disks inclination and position angles. The outer disk geometries were derived from Keplerian fits to the ALMA velocity maps and compared to the inner disk constraints. We also predicted the locations of shadows for significantly misaligned systems. Our analysis reveals six disks to exhibit significant misalignments between their inner and outer disks. The predicted shadow positions agree well with the scattered light images of HD100453 and HD142527, and we find supporting evidence for a shadow in the disk around CQ Tau. In the other three targets for which we infer significantly misaligned disks, V1247 Ori, V1366 Ori, and RY Lup, we do not see any evident sign of shadows in the scattered light images. The scattered light shadows observed in DoAr44, HD135344B, and HD139614 are consistent with our observations, yet the underlying morphology is likely too complex to be described by our models and the accuracy achieved by our observations. Whereas we can derive precise constraints on the potential shadow positions for well-resolved inner disks around HAeBe stars, the statistical uncertainties for the marginally resolved inner disks around the TTS of our sample make it difficult to extract conclusive constraints for the presence of shadows in these systems.
Vortices are one of the most promising mechanisms to locally concentrate millimeter dust grains and allow the formation of planetesimals through gravitational collapse. The outer disk around the ...binary system HD 142527 is known for its large horseshoe structure with azimuthal contrasts of 3-5 in the gas surface density and of about 50 in the dust. Using 13CO and C18O J = 3-2 transition lines, we detect kinematic deviations to the Keplerian rotation, which are consistent with the presence of a large vortex around the dust crescent, as well as a few spirals in the outer regions of the disk. Comparisons with a vortex model suggest velocity deviations up to 350 m/s after deprojection compared to the background Keplerian rotation, as well as an extension of about 40 au radially on both sides of the vortex and 200 degrees azimuthally, yielding an azimuthal-to-radial aspect ratio of 5. Another alternative for explaining the vortex-like signal implies artificial velocity deviations generated by beam smearing in association with variations of the gas velocity due to gas pressure gradients at the inner and outer edges of the circumbinary disk. The two scenarios are currently difficult to differentiate and, for this purpose, would probably require the use of multiple lines at a higher spatial resolution. The beam smearing effect, due to the finite spatial resolution of the observations and gradients in the line emission, should be common in observations of protoplanetary disks and may lead to misinterpretations of the gas velocity, in particular around ring-like structures.
The aim of this study was to determine whether the colonic motor profile of seven patients with constipation secondary to antidepressants differed from the motility of seven patients with idiopathic ...constipation and seven healthy volunteers. All constipated patients had very severe constipation. Colonic manometric recordings were performed for 24 h. The number of high amplitude propagating contractions (HAPC) was lower in the two groups of constipated patients than in controls. No HAPC were observed in 5/7 patients with constipation secondary to antidepressants and in 1/7 patients with idiopathic constipation. The overall area under the curve (AUC) in the left colon was lower in the two constipated patient groups than in controls. AUC increased after a 1000‐kcal standard meal given at noon in controls but not in the two groups of constipated patients. In conclusion, in patients with constipation secondary to antidepressants, the overall AUC was as poor as in patients with idiopathic constipation, and no colonic response to eating was observed. Moreover, the number of HAPC was more markedly decreased in patients with constipation secondary to antidepressants than in patients with idiopathic constipation.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) will have the necessary resolution to observe a planetary gap created by a Jupiter-mass planet in a protoplanetary disk. Because it will ...observe at submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths, grains in the size range 10 mu m to 1 cm are relevant for the thermal emission. The authors provide predictions for ALMA observations of planet gaps that account for the specific spatial distribution of dust that results from consistent gas+dust dynamics. In a previous work, they ran full 3D, two-fluid Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of a planet embedded in a gas+dust T Tauri disk for different planet masses and grain sizes. In this work, the resulting dust distributions are passed to the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code MCFOST to construct synthetic images in the ALMA wavebands. Their findings clearly demonstrate the importance of correctly incorporating the dust dynamics. They show that the gap carved by a 1 MJ planet orbiting at 40 AU is visible with a much higher contrast than the well-mixed assumption would predict.

Erythropoietin (EPO) is the main red cell growth factor and its release into the blood stream is stimulated by anemia and also by various kinds of hypoxia. We studied the blood EPO concentration in a ...population of 96 infants who died suddenly and compared their mean EPO levels to control infants. The normal values were low at birth and progressively increased during the first 2 years. In the sudden infant death (SID) group the EPO level was significantly higher (p = 0.001) for the entire population and particularly in the youngest group (0-2 months): 14.7 +/- 2.4 IU/l (mean +/- SEM) in SID group vs. 3.6 +/- 0.4 IU/l in control group (p < 0.001). Although we could not analyze the blood hemoglobin concentration after death, the anemia hypothesis was refuted by an assay of the percentage of fetal hemoglobin which was normal for age in the control and SID groups. Moreover, there was no significant difference in EPO levels between explained and unexplained deaths. We also observed an increase in the stress hormones, cortisol and beta-endorphin, in the entire SID group. These SID results suggest a profound and long-lasting hypoxia at least during terminal agony.
Biofilms colonizing pipe surfaces of drinking water distribution systems could provide habitat and shelter for pathogenic viruses present in the water phase. This study aims (i) to develop a method ...to detect viral particles present in a drinking water biofilm and (ii) to study viral interactions with drinking water biofilms. A pilot scale system was used to develop drinking water biofilms on 3 materials (7 cm(2) discs): PVC, cast iron and cement. Biofilms were inoculated with viral model including MS2, PhiX174 or adenovirus. Five techniques were tested to recover virus from biofilms. The most efficient uses beef extract and glycine at pH = 9. After sonication and centrifugation, the pH of the supernatant is neutralized prior to viral analysis. The calculated recovery rates varied from 29.3 to 74.6% depending on the virus (MS2 or PhiX174) and the material. Applying this protocol, the interactions of virus models (MS2 and adenovirus) with drinking water biofilms were compared. Our results show that adsorption of viruses to biofilms depends on their isoelectric points, the disc material and the hydrodynamic conditions. Applying hydrodynamic conditions similar to those existing in drinking water networks resulted in a viral adsorption corresponding to less than 1% of the initial viral load.
