Previous studies demonstrated a promising prognosis in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who underwent surgery, yet a consensus of which population would benefit most from surgery is ...still unreached.
A total of 496 advanced HCC patients who initially underwent liver resection were consecutively collected. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was performed to select significant pre-operative factors for recurrence-free survival (RFS). A prognostic score constructed from these factors was used to divide patients into different risk groups. Survivals were compared between groups with log-rank test. The area under curves (AUC) of the time-dependent receiver operating characteristics was used to evaluate the predictive accuracy of prognostic score.
For the entire cohort, the median overall survival (OS) was 23.0 months and the median RFS was 12.1 months. Patients were divided into two risk groups according to the prognostic score constructed with ALBI score, tumor size, tumor-invaded liver segments, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, alpha fetoprotein, and portal vein tumor thrombus stage. The median RFS of the low-risk group was significantly longer than that of the high-risk group in both the training (10.1 vs 2.9 months,
<0.001) and the validation groups (13.7 vs 4.6 months,
=0.002). The AUCs of the prognostic score in predicting survival were 0.70 to 0.71 in the training group and 0.71 to 0.72 in the validation group.
Surgery could provide promising survival for HCC patients at an advanced stage. Our developed pre-operative prognostic score is effective in identifying advanced-stage HCC patients with better survival benefit for surgery.
A comprehensive study on the microstructural evolution of a new type Al–Zn–Mg–Cu–Er–Zr alloy during homogenization was conducted by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission ...electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results show that serious segregation exists in as-cast alloy, and the primary phases are T(AlZnMgCu), S(Al2CuMg) and Al8Cu4Er, which preferentially locate in the grain boundary regions. The soluble T(AlZnMgCu) and S(Al2CuMg) phases dissolve into the matrix gradually during single-stage homogenized at 465 °C with prolonging holding time, but the residual Al8Cu4Er phase cannot dissolve completely. Compared with the single-stage homogenization, both a finer particle size and a higher volume fraction of L12-structured Al3(Er, Zr) dispersoids can be obtained in the two-stage homogenization process. A suitable homogenization scheme for the present alloy is (400 °C, 10 h)+(465 °C, 24 h), which is consistent with the results of homogenization kinetic analysis.

Sulfosalicylic acid intercalated Mg/Cu/Al-LDHs composite material was prepared by coprecipitation method. The as-prepared material was characterized by XRD, FT-IR and TG-DTA measurements. It was ...found that the object was intercalated into LDHs layers and the layer distance changed from 0.832 nm to 1.125 nm. Based on these data, a structure model about the LDHs layers was speculated. EDS analysis verified that the element ratio of intercalated LDHs was close to the theoretical value and the LDH excellent layer structure was maintained after intercalating assembly. Furthermore, the thermal stability of LDHs was improved due to the effects of electrostatic and hydrogen bond between the object and basal planes. Meanwhile, it was indicated by UV-DRS results that the intercalated LDHs composite show both shielding and absorbing effects to UV light.
We have examined the myogenic potential of human embryonic stem （hES） cells in a xeno-transplantation animal model. Here we show that precursors differentiated from hES cells can undergo myogenesis ...in an adult environment and give rise to a range of cell types in the myogenic lineage. This study provides direct evidences that hES cells can regenerate both muscle and satellite cells in vivo and are another promising cell type for treating muscle degenerative disorders in addition to other myogenic cell types.

Low cycle fatigue behavior of TWIP (twinning induced plasticity) steel was investigated in axial symmetric tension-compression cyclic loading pattern. Fracture surfaces and microstructures were ...examined by optical, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopes. It was found that the fatigue life at the strain amplitude of 0.4% is up to 15000 cycles, which is much longer than TRIP780 and HSLA800 steels. The strain hardening and softening features are significant until the strain amplitude comes to 1.25%. Persistent slip bands and tiny mechanical twinning layers were observed after fatigue deformation. Deformation mechanism of TWIP steel at low cycle fatigue process is not only twinning, but a complex of both twinning and persistent slip bands.

Background
Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is one of the common postoperative complications, which is more common in aged patients. POCD mainly manifests as cognitive function changes ...after surgery, such as memory decline and inattention. In some severe cases, patients may suffer from personality changes and (or) social behavior decline. The aim of the current study is to confirm the effect and elucidate the mechanism of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in postoperative central inflammatory mice.
Methods
Mice were randomly assigned to four groups: sham, sham+BMSCs, model, and BMSCs group. In the model group, mice were intraperitoneally injected 8 mg/kg per day lipopolysaccharide for 5 days. In sham+BMSCs and BMSCs group, BMSCs (1 × 10
7) in 100 µL saline were injected into sham mice and model mice, respectively.
Results
In the model group, transforming growth factor β (TGF‐β) protein expression was significantly increased, compared with that in the sham group. BMSCs were treated into postoperative central inflammatory mice, which resulted in a decreased of TGF‐β protein expression. TGF‐β and smad2 protein expression were suppressed, and apoptosis rate and inflammation were inhibited in coculture with BMSCs. The suppression of TGF‐β inhibited the effects of BMSCs on apoptosis rate and inflammation in postoperative central inflammatory through a smad2 signaling pathway. The promotion of TGF‐β reduced the effects of BMSCs on apoptosis rate and inflammation in postoperative central inflammatory through a smad2 signaling pathway.
Conclusion
The present study demonstrates that BMSCs regulates TGF‐β to adjust neuroinflammation in postoperative central inflammatory mice.

. Bats have been recognized as one of the most important reservoirs for emerging ...viruses and the transmission of a coronavirus that originated in bats to humans via intermediate hosts was responsible for the high-impact emerging zoonosis, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)
. Here we provide virological, epidemiological, evolutionary and experimental evidence that a novel HKU2-related bat coronavirus, swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), is the aetiological agent that was responsible for a large-scale outbreak of fatal disease in pigs in China that has caused the death of 24,693 piglets across four farms. Notably, the outbreak began in Guangdong province in the vicinity of the origin of the SARS pandemic. Furthermore, we identified SADS-related CoVs with 96-98% sequence identity in 9.8% (58 out of 591) of anal swabs collected from bats in Guangdong province during 2013-2016, predominantly in horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus spp.) that are known reservoirs of SARS-related CoVs. We found that there were striking similarities between the SADS and SARS outbreaks in geographical, temporal, ecological and aetiological settings. This study highlights the importance of identifying coronavirus diversity and distribution in bats to mitigate future outbreaks that could threaten livestock, public health and economic growth.

Over the past decades, the morbidity and mortality caused by pathogen invasion remain stubbornly high even though medical care has increasingly improved worldwide. Besides, impacted by the ...ever-growing multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, the crisis owing to the abuse and misuse of antibiotics has been further exacerbated. Among the wide range of antibacterial strategies, polymeric antibacterial materials with diversified synthetic strategies exhibit unique advantages (
e.g.
, their flexible structural design, processability and recyclability, tuneable platform construction, and safety) for extensive antibacterial fields as compared to low molecular weight organic or inorganic antibacterial materials. In this review, polymeric antibacterial materials are summarized in terms of four structure styles and the most representative material platforms to achieve specific antibacterial applications. The superiority and defects exhibited by various polymeric antibacterial materials are elucidated, and the design of various platforms to elevate their efficacy is also described. Moreover, the application scope of polymeric antibacterial materials is summarized with regard to tissue engineering, personal protection, and environmental security. In the last section, the subsequent challenges and direction of polymeric antibacterial materials are discussed. It is highly expected that this critical review will present an insight into the prospective development of antibacterial functional materials.
