Periodontal disease is an immune-inflammatory disease characterized by connective tissue breakdown, loss of attachment, and alveolar bone resorption. Under normal physiological conditions, a dynamic ...equilibrium is maintained between the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defense capacity. Oxidative stress occurs when this equilibrium shifts in favor of ROS. Oxidative stress is thought to play a causative role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.
The present study was designed to estimate and compare the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) levels in the serum of periodontitis, gingivitis, and healthy individuals before and after nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
The present study was conducted in the Department of Periodontics, A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte, Mangalore. The study was designed as a single blinded interventional study comprising 75 subjects, inclusive of both sexes and divided into three groups of 25 patients each. Patients were categorized into chronic periodontitis, gingivitis, and healthy. The severity of inflammation was assessed using gingival index and pocket probing depth. Biochemical analysis was done to estimate the SOD and GSH levels before and after nonsurgical periodontal therapy. RESULTS obtained were then statistically analyzed using ANOVA test and paired t-test.
The results showed a higher level of serum SOD and GSH in the healthy group compared to the other groups. The difference was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.0001). The post-treatment levels of SOD were statistically higher than the pre-treatment levels in periodontitis and gingivitis group.
The protein profiles of different Iranian clinical isolats of dermatophytes (Microsporum and Trichophyton) were compared bv SDS polyacrilamide ge! electrophoresis. Although some of the protein ...patterns were common in both genuses, there were some genus specific protein profiles. Abo within the species variety of distinct protein were profiles obtained. Protein patterns can therefore distinguish between different genuses, species and strains.

A comprehensive study was undertaken to investigate spatial and temporal distribution of the quality of groundwater used for drinking throughout the state of Bahrain, and to study the applicability ...of the WHO drinking water guidelines to an arid region. A total of 234 water wells representing all areas in Bahrain has been analyzed with respect to total dissolved solids (TDS), with 90 of these samples were analyzed for pH, hardness, alkalinity, major cations (Na, Ca, Mg, K) and anions (Cl, HCO
3
, SO
4
). TDS measured in Bahrain varied widely, ranging from 2120 to 16640 mg/l. Major ions concentrations followed more or less the same TDS trends. TDS and major ionic components of groundwater received from Saudi Arabia by lateral under-flow has the best inorganic quality, and as it flows into Bahrain islands it undergoes modification by mixing with higher salinity waters in Bahrain. These sources of contamination are: (1) sea water encroachment in eastern Bahrain; (2) brackish to saline water up-flow from the underlying formations in north-central and western Bahrain; and (3) sabkha water migration in south-western Bahrain. In most cases, groundwater produced in Bahrain exceeded the WHO public drinking water guidelines and GCC standards by at least two folds. It is recommended that national drinking water standards that takes into account economic, technical, social, cultural, and political conditions are developed for Bahrain. Groundwater background concentrations received by under-flow from Saudi Arabia aquifers are suggested to be used in setting the maximum allowable limits. In order to ensure the application and further update of the nationally set standards, the development of both hydrochemical data base system and effective monitoring system are recommended.
