In antiviral RNA interference (RNAi), the DICER enzyme processes virus-derived double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) into small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that guide ARGONAUTE proteins to silence complementary ...viral RNA. As a counterdefense, viruses deploy viral suppressors of RNAi (VSRs). Well-established in plants and invertebrates, the existence of antiviral RNAi remains unknown in mammals. Here, we show that undifferentiated mouse cells infected with encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) or Nodamura virus (NoV) accumulate ~22-nucleotide RNAs with all the signature features of siRNAs. These derive from viral dsRNA replication intermediates, incorporate into AGO2, are eliminated in Dicer knockout cells, and decrease in abundance upon cell differentiation. Furthermore, genetically ablating a NoV-encoded VSR that antagonizes DICER during authentic infections reduces NoV accumulation, which is rescued in RNAi-deficient mouse cells. We conclude that antiviral RNAi operates in mammalian cells.

A method is presented to produce river cross section profiles from a time series of Sentinel-1 images paired with water level data. Four programs are presented that generate river width data and ...cross section profiles from SAR or optical images. The programs generate a river bank and island width database with minimum manual intervention. Water level data from in situ stations are interpolated to match the width data and create elevation points from which the cross section profiles are produced. The method is fully described and tested on the São Francisco River in Brazil. The width data are plotted against discharge data to compare their progression. Over 1700 cross sections were produced and classified by their shape. Potential and limitations are presented.

were obtained, showing high antibacterial activity. In both of the examined bacteria, the AgNPs were able to raise intracellular ROS levels. In
E. coli,
the AgNPs can harm the bacterial membrane as well. Overall, it can be concluded that it was possible to obtain AgNPs with colloidal stability and antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Our findings point to at least two separate mechanisms that can cause cell death, one of which involves bacterial membrane damage and the other of which involves intracellular ROS induction.

WMH, associated with cognitive decline and cardiovascular risk factors, may represent only the extreme end of a more widespread continuous WM injury process that progresses during aging and is poorly ...understood. We investigated the ability of FLAIR and DTI to characterize the longitudinal course of WMH development.
One hundred nineteen participants (mean age, 74.5 ± 7.4), including cognitively healthy elders and subjects diagnosed with Alzheimer disease and mild cognitive impairment, received a comprehensive clinical evaluation and brain MR imaging, including FLAIR and DTI on 2 dates. The risk for each baseline normal-appearing WM voxel to convert into WMH was modeled as a function of baseline FA (model M1) and both baseline FA and standardized FLAIR (M2). Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and AUC for predicting conversion to WMH were compared between models.
Independent of clinical diagnosis, lower baseline FA (P < .001, both models) and higher baseline FLAIR intensity (P < .001, M2) were independently associated with increased risk for conversion from normal WM to WMH. M1 exhibited higher sensitivity but lower specificity, accuracy, and AUC compared with M2.
These findings provide further evidence that WMH result from a continuous process of WM degeneration with time. Stepwise decreases in WM integrity as measured by both DTI and FLAIR were independently associated with stepwise increases in WMH risk, emphasizing that these modalities may provide complementary information for understanding the time course of aging-associated WM degeneration.
Integral field spectroscopy of the inner region of the Galactic Center, over a field of roughly $40\arcsec\times40\arcsec$ was obtained at 2.06 μm ($\ion{He}{i}$) and 2.16 μm (Brγ) using BEAR, an ...imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer, at spectral resolutions respectively of 52.9 km s-1 and 21.3 km s-1, and a spatial resolution of $\simeq$$0.5\arcsec$. The analysis of the data was focused on the kinematics of the gas flows, traditionally called the “Minispiral”, concentrated in the neighborhood of the central black hole, Sgr A*. From the decomposition into several velocity components (up to four) of the line profile extracted at each point of the field, velocity features were identified. Nine distinguishable structures are described: the standard Northern Arm, Eastern Arm, Bar, Western Arc, and five additional, coherently-moving patches of gas. From this analysis, the Northern Arm appears not limited, as usually thought, to the bright, narrow North-South lane seen on intensity images, but it consists instead of a weak, continuous, triangular-shaped surface, drawn out into a narrow stream in the vicinity of Sgr A* where it shows a strong velocity gradient, and a bright western rim. The Eastern Arm is split into three components (a Ribbon and a Tip, separated by a cavity, and an elongated feature parallel to the Ribbon: the Eastern Bridge). We also report extinction of some interstellar structures by other components, providing information on their relative position along the line of sight. A system of Keplerian orbits can be fitted to most of the Northern Arm, and the bright rim of this feature can be interpreted in terms of line-of-sight orbit crowding caused by the warping of the flowing surface at the western edge facing Sgr A*. These results lead to a new picture of the gas structures in Sgr A West, in which large-scale gas flows and isolated gas patches coexist in the gravitational field of the central Black Hole. The question of the origin of the ionized gas is addressed and a discussion of the lifetime of these features is presented.

We have previously shown that an excess of deoxycorticosterone acetate and high sodium chloride intake (DOCA/salt) in one-renin gene mice induces a high urinary Na/K ratio, hypokalemia, and cardiac ...and renal hypertrophy in the absence of hypertension. Dietary potassium supplementation prevents DOCA/salt-induced pathological processes. In the present study, we further study whether DOCA/salt-treated mice progressively develop chronic inflammation and fibrosis in the kidney and whether dietary potassium supplementation can reduce the DOCA/salt-induced renal pathological process. There is an increasing demand for earth construction in the world today but there is no consensus on the procedure to be used to measure the compressive strength of earth bricks. The study presented ...in this paper aims to propose a test procedure specific to earth bricks that would give the most realistic value of compressive strength while remaining as simple as possible. This study focused on four different bricks and consisted of measuring the compressive strength of these specimens by varying several parameters: specimen size, orientation, use of Teflon capping or not, and tests on dry sawn specimens, on half-bricks or on entire bricks. The results of the study show that the best compromise to achieve a simple and representative compressive strength test for earth bricks is to transform the bricks as little as possible before the test and thus to test entire bricks.

The study focuses on the thermal and hydric properties of extruded earth bricks. The thermal conductivity and water vapour permeability tests highlight anisotropic behaviour of the bricks depending on the extrusion direction during the production process. The results confirm that the extrusion process has a major influence on the orientation of clay layers and has an impact on the hygrothermal properties.
