The analysis shows that militaristic metaphors were omnipresent in the Croatian public discourse at the beginning of the pandemic. Their dual role, explanatory and persuasive, was instrumental in convincing the public to understand the pandemic and accept the restrictive mandates put in place.
Metafore se često upotrebljavaju u suvremenim javnim diskursima o različitim temama, pa tako i u diskursu o pandemiji virusa COVID-19. Prema rezultatima dosadašnjih istraživanja (Bates 2020, Semino 2021, Wicke and Bolognesi 2020), u javnom diskursuo pandemiji koronavirusa najbrojnije su ratne metafore, koje su tema ovog rada. U radu su prikupljeni metaforički jezični izrazi iz izvorišne domene rata korišteni u dnevnim novinama za vrijeme prvog vala pandemije te je analiziran njihov retorički persuazivni potencijal u hrvatskom sociokulturnom kontekstu. Kvalitativna analiza korpusa temelji se na Charteris-Blackovom (2011) trodijelnom pristupu koji obuhvaća identifikaciju, interpretaciju i objašnjenje metafora. Cilj je utvrditi koji su se metaforički jezični izričaji iz domene rata koristili u hrvatskom javnom diskursu o pandemiji te objasniti zašto su se koristili i na koji način su oblikovali percepciju javnosti. Rezultati analize potvrdili su sveprisutnost ratnih metafora u hrvatskom javnom diskursu na početku pandemije koronavirusa. Njihova dvostruka uloga, kao sredstva za tumačenje i uvjeravanje, bila je ključna u oblikovanju mišljenja javnosti o pandemiji i prihvaćanju nametnutih restriktivnih mjera.

Posljednjih nekoliko godina fenomen migracija izaziva iznimnu medijsku pozornost u cijeloj Europi, a među mnogobrojnim pitanjima koje ta široka i višeslojna tema otvara, nameće se i pitanje uloge ...jezika u konstruiranju prikaza migranata i oblikovanju stavova o njima. U ovom radu proučavaju se diskursne strategije koje se upotrebljavaju kod imenovanja i opisivanja migranata kao pojedinaca i kao društvene skupine. Središnji dio rada posvećen je analizi upotrebe strategija nominacije i predikacije (Reisigl i Wodak 2001), a osnovni cilj je analizirati jezik kojim mediji imenuju migrante i opisuju njihove osobine. Kako bi se ostvario osnovni cilj rada, nužno je razmotriti i konstrukciju opreke Mi/Oni, usko vezane uz pozitivan prikaz Sebe i negativan prikaz Drugoga, a uz pretpostavku da se konstruiranjem negativne slike o Drugom pridonosi oblikovanju pozitivne slike o Sebi. Opozicija Mi/Oni ostvaruje se u odnosu dvaju glavnih društvenih aktera, tj. Europe/europskih zemalja i migranata, a stajališta o migrantima kao dionicima društvene zbilje ispituju se na uzorcima korpusa preuzetih iz britanskih i talijanskih dnevnih novina.
This paper contributes to the study of the semantic aspect of Italian loanwords in the Split dialectal lexis. Italian loanwords are those loanwords that have been borrowed in the dialect of the city ...of Split from the northern Italian dialects, namely the Venetian and Triestine dialects, and from the standard Italian language. The corpus, which is composed of 187 Italian loanwords referring to human qualities and characteristics, is excerpted from four dictionaries of the Split dialect. The meanings of dialectal replicas are compared to the meanings of their Italian models indicated in the Italian dialectal and monolingual dictionaries. The semantic adaptation of replicas is analysed using the method proposed by the Croatian linguist Rudolf Filipović in his theory of languages in contact. According to Filipović, during the process of semantic adaptation loanwords go through three types of changes with respect to semantic extension: a) zero semantic extension, b) restriction of meaning, c) expansion of meaning. The zero-semantic extension and the restriction of meaning are parts of the first stage of adaptation or primary adaptation, while the expansion of meaning is a part of the second stage of adaptation or secondary adaptation. From the semantic point of view, Italian loanwords referring to the intimate spheres of human activity are interesting because during the process of semantic adaptation they tend not only to restrict their meaning, but also to expand it. The results of this study have revealed a high level of semantic adaptation of Italian loanwords referring to human qualities and characteristics in the Split dialect. The majority of analysed replicas have gone through the restriction in the number of their meanings when compared to their Italian models, which confirms a general tendency of loanwords towards the restriction of meaning.
The phenomenon of migration has received much media attention in Europe in recent years. This rich and multifaceted topic raises numerous questions, one of the most important of which is the question ...of the role of language in representing migrants and shaping the attitudes toward them. This paper examines the discursive strategies employed by the media in naming and describing migrants, both as individuals and as a social group, focusing on the strategies of nomination and predication (Reisigl and Wodak 2001). In order to achieve the primary objective of the study, it is also necessary to consider the construction of an Us vs. Them binary, often established through the process of positive self-presentation and negative other-presentation. By constructing a negative image of the Other, the positive image of Self is formed. A We/They binary is realized through the relation Europe - migrants and the views on migrants as social actors are examined on the corpora made up of texts from British and Italian daily newspapers.
Se paragonati ai prestiti provenienti da altre lingue europee, gli slavismi non sono così numerosi nella lingua italiana e finora non stati studiati dettagliatamente. Il presente contributo si ...propone di raccogliere gli slavismi presenti nel vocabolario monolingue della lingua italiana, di classificarli in base al campo semantico, categoria grammaticale, lingua d’origine e datazione, nonché in base alla loro integrazione nella lingua italiana. Con il termine slavismo designiamo i prestiti integrati e non integrati che sono entrati nella lingua italiana da varie lingue slave quali il russo, croato, serbo, sloveno, ceco, polacco, bosniaco, slovacco, bulgaro e ucraino, come pure i loro derivati e i derivati formati dalle parole slave. Il corpus viene tratto dal vocabolario monolingue italiano Lo Zingarelli. Vocabolario della lingua italiana di Nicola Zingarelli (ZIN). Nel corpus predominano i nomi relativi al campo semantico della terminologia politica e militare, il che è in relazione con l’ alto numero degli slavismi provenienti dal russo. Si tratta di prestiti che entrarono nella lingua italiana nel corso dell’Ottocento e del Novecento, che nella maggior parte si sono adattati ortograficamente, fonologicamente e/o morfologicamente alla lingua ricevente. Abbiamo anche notato tanti casi di forme alterate di slavismi nei quali spesso una forma intergrata si alterna alle forme non integrate. I casi di derivati formati dagli slavismi sono rari, però sono interessanti in quanto confermano un alto grado d’integrazione e la produttività dei rispettivi prestiti.

This article studies the ways in which the absolute gerund is used in forming different types of implicit subordinate clauses in the work Storia dell’antica Grecia written in Italian by Vincenzo ...Drago (1770–1836). Drago was a Dalmatian author born in Kotor, a student in Padua and a supporter of Antonio Cesari’s purism. The absolute gerund is an implicit verb form with its own subject, typically used by Giovanni Boccaccio and by authors using archaic language and those imitating the language of the Tuscan Trecento. The 18th and 19th centuries saw gradual reduction in its usage, very well exemplified by Manzoni’s novel I promessi sposi (1840). Taking into consideration papers studying the ways in which this verb form was used by Boccaccio and Manzoni, our goal is to examine if the author, who tended to simplify multilateral complex sentences typical of Boccaccio, also tended to simplify this segment of his syntax.
Starting from the need to analyse and to classify the lexical changes in the Italian language caused by the new dynamics in the field of employment, the goal of this paper is to collect an adequate ...corpus of neologisms, to analyse and to compare them to their Croatian equivalents. The corpus consists of the expressions from the field of labour extracted from the Italian daily papers and from the Italian dictionaries of new and foreign words and from online work ads. The Croatian equivalents were checked for in the Croatian dictionaries of new and foreign words as well as in the online Dictionary database of Croatian Language Portal (HJP). By comparing the Italian and the Croatian neologisms we have analysed their presence and the modality of adaptation in both languages. Considering relative openness of the Italian language to foreign influences on one side, and purist orientation and hermetic tendencies of the Croatian language on the other side, our analysis and classification have confirmed the much greater presence of original, non adapted English terms in the Italian corpus. A relatively small number of original Italian neologisms confirms the globalisation of Italian labour market and its lexis.
Negli ultimi decenni del Novecento le nuove guerre, le pulizie etniche e i disastri ambientali hanno creato un alto numero di migranti e profughi, persone in fuga e in transito che si spostano alla ...ricerca di migliori condizioni di vita. Dato che l'Europa, e in particolar modo l'Italia, si sentono in pericolo, colpiti dalla sindrome d'invasione per i continui arrivi di immigrati, si sono formati nuovi muri, non solo materiali, ma anche muri e frontiere mentali. Il nuovo clima ha favorito la nascita di parole nuove relative ai movimenti migratori e alla percezione della figura del migrante. Con la crescita del fenomeno, si è diffusa un'epidemia di pregiudizi e stereotipi di fronte alle persone percepite come oggettivamente diverse. I termini e le espressioni, a cui si ricorre per indicare i nuovi arrivati, abbondano di etichette del migrante la cui rappresentazione mediatica risulta per lo più negativa. Da diversi studi che trattano questo argomento si percepisce che il discorso mediatico italiano, centrato sull’emergenza, contribuisce alla stereotipizzazione negativa dello straniero, legata alla criminalità e pericolosità. Secondo Maneri e Dal Lago lo straniero viene percepito come una minaccia alla società italiana ed europea e discriminato innanzitutto dal linguaggio usato per rappresentarlo, mentre la contrapposizione tra Noi e Loro viene rafforzata da generalizzazioni e dall’uso del lessico metaforico. Il corpus che si propone di studiare e analizzare si riferisce agli articoli sul tema delle migrazioni, tratti dai due giornali quotidiani italiani di diffusione nazionale. Si prendono in esame gli articoli pubblicati in due periodi diversi, corrispondenti ai differenti contesti sociopolitici della realtà italiana (settembre 2015 e aprile 2017), e in tal modo si tenta di osservare e studiare la lingua nel suo ruolo da protagonista nella costruzione dell’immagine mediatica dei migranti.
