This paper reports on the sensitivity of earthquake response and damage of long span masonry stone bridges to near field (impulsive type) and far field earthquakes. Towards that objective, the Konitsa Bridge is used as a case study. The particular bridge was selected for offering certain unique features such as long span, built right on an active fault, survived a recent pair of near-filed type earthquakes with minimal damage and finally, construction material mechanical properties and strength could be deduced from a recently collapsed similar bridge in the area. The multifaceted study integrated in-situ measurements of dynamic characteristics, laboratory tests on representative stone and mortar materials and a series of finite-element analyses based on non-linear modelling using a combination of discontinuous and continuous representations to capture the behavior of bridge structural component interface and interaction as well as mortar-stone interaction and failure. In addition to the ground motion records of the recent seismic activity at the Konitsa Bridge location, four additional earthquake records representing near-field and far-field families were utilized to assess the stone bridge sensitivity. The study revealed that far-field earthquakes are far more destructive than near-field counterparts, a finding in full agreement with studies on near field earthquake effects on nuclear structures. The applicability of earthquake damage indicators such as CAV, Arias intensity and energy rate, typically used for conventional and nuclear structures, was evaluated based on the numerical analysis results.

We report the 5-year analysis from the phase III Dasatinib Versus Imatinib Study in Treatment-Naïve Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Patients (DASISION) trial, evaluating long-term efficacy and safety ...outcomes of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase (CP) treated with dasatinib or imatinib.
Patients with newly diagnosed CML-CP were randomly assigned to receive dasatinib 100 mg once daily (n = 259) or imatinib 400 mg once daily (n = 260).
At the time of study closure, 61% and 63% of dasatinib- and imatinib-treated patients remained on initial therapy, respectively. Cumulative rates of major molecular response and molecular responses with a 4.0- or 4.5-log reduction in BCR-ABL1 transcripts from baseline by 5 years remained statistically significantly higher for dasatinib compared with imatinib. Rates for progression-free and overall survival at 5 years remained high and similar across treatment arms. In patients who achieved BCR-ABL1 ≤ 10% at 3 months (dasatinib, 84%; imatinib, 64%), improvements in progression-free and overall survival and lower rates of transformation to accelerated/blast phase were reported compared with patients with BCR-ABL1 greater than 10% at 3 months. Transformation to accelerated/blast phase occurred in 5% and 7% of patients in the dasatinib and imatinib arms, respectively. Fifteen dasatinib-treated and 19 imatinib-treated patients had BCR-ABL1 mutations identified at discontinuation. There were no new or unexpected adverse events identified in either treatment arm, and pleural effusion was the only drug-related, nonhematologic adverse event reported more frequently with dasatinib (28% v 0.8% with imatinib). First occurrences of pleural effusion were reported with dasatinib, with the highest incidence in year 1. Arterial ischemic events were uncommon in both treatment arms.
These final results from the DASISION trial continue to support dasatinib 100 mg once daily as a safe and effective first-line therapy for the long-term treatment of CML-CP.
Background
BMS-927711 is a potent, selective, competitive human calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist that has shown in vivo efficacy without vasoconstrictor effect. The ...objective of the current study was to determine an effective and tolerable dose range of BMS-927711 for the acute treatment of migraine.
Methods
In this randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, dose-ranging study, 885 patients were randomized using an adaptive design to one of the following dose groups: BMS-927711 (10, 25, 75, 150, 300, or 600 mg); sumatriptan 100 mg (active comparator); and placebo. Patients were treated for a single migraine attack. The primary endpoint was pain freedom at two hours post-dose.
Results
Of patients who took the study drug, 799 had one post-randomization efficacy evaluation. Significantly more patients in the BMS-927711 75 mg (31.4%, p = 0.002), 150 mg (32.9%, p < 0.001), and 300 mg (29.7%, p = 0.002) groups and the sumatriptan group (35%, p < 0.001) had pain freedom at two hours post-dose versus placebo (15.3%). For the secondary endpoint of sustained pain freedom from two to 24 hours post-dose, BMS-927711 doses (25–600 mg) were also statistically significant compared with placebo. No deaths or treatment-related serious adverse events (AEs) were reported, and no patients discontinued because of AEs.
Conclusions
BMS-927711 is superior to placebo at several different doses (75 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg) and has an excellent tolerability profile.

Multi-story, old reinforced concrete (RC) structures with a “soft-story” on the ground floor, sustain considerable damage to the soft story during earthquakes due to the presence of masonry infills ...in the upper stories. Aspects of such masonry infill–RC frame interaction are briefly discussed and a particular retrofitting scheme for the soft story is studied. It consists of RC infills, added within the bays of the ground floor frames and combined with RC jacketing of the surrounding frame, aiming to avert such soft-story deficiency. The impact of such a retrofit is studied through the measured response of 1/3 scaled single-story, one-bay frames subjected to cyclic seismic-type horizontal loads. It is shown that this retrofit results in a considerable beneficial increase in stiffness, strength, and plastic energy consumption. The importance of the presence of effective steel ties connecting this RC infill with the surrounding frame is also demonstrated. In order to achieve these desired beneficial effects to such vulnerable buildings, additional design objectives are established with the aim of avoiding premature failure of the RC infill panel and/or fracture of the steel ties and to protect the surrounding RC frame from undesired local damage. A numerical methodology, which is validated by using the obtained experimental results, is shown to be capable of predicting reasonably well these important response mechanisms and can therefore be utilized for design purposes.
Biomass pyrolysis is a promising technology for fuel and chemical production from an abundant renewable source. It takes place usually in two stages; non-catalytic pyrolysis with further catalytic ...upgrading of the formed pyrolysis oil. The direct catalytic pyrolysis of biomass reduces the pyrolysis temperature, increase the yield to target products and improves their quality. However, in such one-stage process the contact between biomass and solid catalyst particles is poor leading to an excessively high degree of pure thermal pyrolysis reactions. The aim of this study was to enhance the catalyst-biomass contact via co-pressing of biomass and catalyst particles as a pre-treatment method. Catalytic pyrolysis of biomass components with HY and USY zeolites was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), as well as experiments in a pyrolysis reactor. The liquid and coke yields were characterized using gas chromatography, and TGA respectively. The TGA results showed that the degradation of the co-pressed cellulose occurred at lower temperatures compared to the pure thermal degradation, as well as catalytic degradation of non-pretreated cellulose. All biomass components produced better results using the co-pressing method, where the liquid yields increased while coke/char yields decreased. Bio-oil from catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose with HY catalyst mainly produced heavier fractions, while in the presence of USY catalyst medium fraction was mainly produced within the gasoline range. For hemicellulose catalytic pyrolysis, the catalysts had similar effects in enhancing the lighter fraction, but specifically, HY showed higher selectivity to middle fraction while USY has produced higher percentage of lighter fraction. Using with both catalysts, co-pressing had the best effect of eliminating the heavier fraction and improving the gasoline range fraction. Spent catalyst from co-pressed sample had lower concentrations of coke/char components due to the shorter residence times of volatiles, which suppresses the occurrence of secondary reactions leading to coke/char formations.

Objective: To evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of aripiprazole in the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autistic disorder. Method: Two hundred eighteen children ...and adolescents (aged 6-17 years) with a diagnosis of autistic disorder, and with behaviors such as tantrums, aggression, self-injurious behavior, or a combination of these symptoms, were randomized 1:1:1:1 to aripiprazole (5, 10, or 15 mg/day) or placebo in this 8-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study. Efficacy was evaluated using the caregiver-rated Aberrant Behavior Checklist Irritability subscale (primary efficacy measure) and the clinician-rated Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement score. Safety and tolerability were also assessed. Results: At week 8, all aripiprazole doses produced significantly greater improvement than placebo in mean Aberrant Behavior Checklist Irritability subscale scores (5 mg/day, -12.4; 10 mg/day, -13.2; 15 mg/day, -14.4; versus placebo, -8.4; all p less than 0.05). All aripiprazole doses demonstrated significantly greater improvements in mean Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement score than placebo at week 8. Discontinuation rates due to adverse events were as follows: placebo 7.7%, aripiprazole 5 mg/day 9.4%, 10 mg/day 13.6%, and 15 mg/day 7.4%. The most common adverse event leading to discontinuation was sedation. There were two serious adverse events: presyncope (5 mg/day) and aggression (10 mg/day). At week 8, mean weight change (last observation carried forward) was as follows: placebo +0.3 kg, aripiprazole 5 mg/day +1.3 kg, 10 mg/day +1.3 kg, and 15 mg/day +1.5 kg; all p less than 0.05 versus placebo. Conclusions: Aripiprazole was efficacious and generally safe and well tolerated in the treatment of children and adolescents with irritability associated with autistic disorder. The co-gasification of beech-wood and polyethylene has been investigated in a lab-scale fluidised-bed reactor in the presence of four different types of bed materials (silica sand, olivine, Na-Y ...zeolite and ZSM-5 zeolite). ZSM-5 zeolite is very effective as a catalytic bed material in fluidized-bed reactor for wood-only gasification and co-gasification in terms of high hydrogen production and CGE. Na-Y zeolite is more effective compared with ZSM-5 zeolite in co-gasification of the beech-wood and polyethylene process. The catalytic activity in co-gasification of beech-wood and polyethylene can be ranked accordingly: Na-Y zeolite > ZSM-5 zeolite > olivine. In general, higher amounts of steam injected in the fluidized-bed reactor and more polyethylene would lead to higher hydrogen production in the co-gasification process.

The combined seismic and energy retrofit of existing aged buildings represents a topic of importance for the building stock. The current study investigates the out-of-plane performance of a specific ...type of thermo-insulation scheme with panels attached on the external facades of multistory buildings. The investigation was carried out through flexure tests of prototype masonry specimens. From the comparison of their flexural performance, with or without thermo-insulating attachments, the influence of thermal insulation on the out-of-plane behavior of clay brick masonry is demonstrated. It was found that when the thermo-insulating attachment is in tension from such out-of-plane flexure of the masonry facade it performs in a satisfactory way and gives an increased flexural capacity for the assembly. The thermal insulating panels, although partially debonded from the masonry substrate at a limit-state, do not collapse, even when the masonry panel develops large flexural cracks. This is due to the presence of the used plastic anchors. When the thermo-insulating panel is subjected to compression during such an out-of-plane flexure the resulting increase in the out-of-plane load bearing capacity is relatively small. Based on these observations it can be concluded that such thermo-insulating panels may also lead to a less vulnerable seismic performance than that of the same masonry panel without this type of thermo-insulating attachment. This was also confirmed when the in-plane behavior was considered from a separate investigation already published. The employed numerical modeling was successful in simulating the most important aspects of the out-of-plane response of the tested masonry wallets with or without thermo-insulating attachments. The good agreement with observed performance as well as the general nature of this numerical simulation confirms its validity for further use.

Sonochemical-assisted synthesis has flourished recently for the design of photocatalysts. The main power used is ultrasound that allows the nanomaterials shape and size modification and control. This review highlights the effect in formation mechanism by ultrasound application and the most common photocatalysts that were prepared via sonochemical techniques. Moreover, the challenge for the suitable reactor design for the synthesis of materials or for their photocatalytic evaluation is discussed since the most prominent reactor systems, batch, and continuous flow, has both advantages and drawbacks. This work summarises the significance of sonochemical synthesis for photocatalytic materials as a green technology that needs to be further investigated for the preparation of new materials and the scale up of developed reactor systems to meet industrial needs.

Here we present an exactly treated quasi-one dimensional statistical mechanical osmotic ensemble model of pressure and adsorption induced breathing structural transformations of metal-organic ...frameworks (MOFs). The treatment uses a transfer matrix method. The model successfully reproduces the gas and pressure induced structural changes which are observed experimentally in MOFs. The model treatment presented here is a significant step towards analytical statistical mechanical treatments of flexible metal-organic frameworks.
