This study provides a first step toward the knowledge of the alien-dominated and co-dominated plant communities present in Italy. The first ever checklist of the alien phytocoenoses described or ...reported in literature for the Italian territory has been compiled, produced by data-mining in national and local thematic literature. The resulting vegetation-type draft-list has been checked in the light of the most recent syntaxonomic documentation and updated with regards to syntaxonomy and nomenclature, with special reference to the frame proposed in the Italian Vegetation Prodrome. The list includes 27 vascular and one bryophyte vegetation classes, hosting 194 low rank alien-dominated
syntaxa
. The different vegetation types detected for each syntaxonomic class and macro-vegetation group, defined by physiognomical and ecological attributes, are discussed.
The aim of this study was to test a method to locate all the foci, centres, and areas of endemism in a biodiversity hotspot in order to understand the influence of ecological and historical factors ...on the distribution pattern and to identify priority areas for future conservation projects. The study area was the Maritime and Ligurian Alps hotspot. Analyses were performed on the presence/absence matrix of 36 vascular plant taxa endemic to the study area. For each operational geographical unit, the number of endemic taxa present was counted. Additionally, the weighted endemism value was calculated. Areas of endemism were distinguished using cluster analysis and parsimony analysis of endemicity. The influence of ecological characteristics and historical factors was evaluated using Multi-Response Permutation Procedure and the Nonparametric Multiplicative Regression. The Indicator Species Analysis (INDVAL) method was used to identify the species characterizing the areas of endemism. Our results show the importance and location of four main areas of endemism within the Maritime and Ligurian Alps and explain the distribution pattern of endemic plants. These areas are easily interpreted by historical and ecological factors, and INDVAL indicates which taxa took part in the history of each endemism area.

The deep shoal of Punta del Faro (Ligurian Sea, Mediterranean Sea) is a mesophotic rocky elevation hosting complex animal forests threatened by fishing activities. To identify appropriate ...conservation measures and set a reference example for similar cases, we present a detailed characterization of its megabenthic communities and a quantification of the fishing pressure. The results highlight the high natural value of the area, presenting high biodiversity (111 megabenthic and demersal species) and diverse types of animal forest, predominantly dominated by cnidarians. The tridimensional seascape is among the most complex in the eastern Ligurian Sea, but the long-term evaluation of its environmental status suggested consistent affects due to the high abundance of lost fishing gear (0.65 items m−2) directly entangled with structuring cnidarians. The artisanal and recreational fishing pressure are currently moderate. However, the use of bottom-contact fishing gear causes significant modifications to the seafloor’s integrity. This study emphasizes the high conservation value and vulnerability of the shoal, highlighting the importance of its protection through its inclusion in the Portofino MPA, whose external perimeter is 200 m from the study area. A critical discussion of the advantages and disadvantages is provided with a map of the possible extension of the MPA boundaries.

This study investigated the accumulation and distribution of nickel in the leaves and roots of the Mediterranean shrub Alyssoides utriculata to assess its potential use in phytoremediation of Ni contaminated soils. Total (AAS and ICP-MS) Ni, Ca and Mg contents were analyzed in the plants and related to their bioavailability (in EDTA) in serpentine and non-serpentine soils. To find the relationships between the soil available Ni and the Ni content of this species, we also evaluated possible interactions with Ca and Mg. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) and the translocation factor (TF) were determined to assess the tolerance strategies developed by A. utriculata and to evaluate its potential for phytoextraction or phytostabilization.
The leaf Ni is higher than 1000μgg−1 which categorizes the species as a Ni-hyperaccumulator and a great candidate for Ni-phytoextraction purposes. In addition to the accumulation of Ni, the leaf Mg is also correlated with soil bioavailable concentrations. The Ca uptake and translocation were significantly lower in serpentine plants (higher Ni), as such, the leaf Ca is probably greatly influenced either by the soil’s Ni or the soil Ca/Mg ratio. The BFs and TFs are strongly higher than 1 and generally did not significantly differed between plants from serpentine (higher Ni) and non-serpentine soils (lower Ni).
The present study highlights for the first time that A. utriculata could be suitable for cleaning Ni-contaminated areas and provides a contribution to the very small volume of data available on the potential use of native Mediterranean plant species from contaminated sites in phytoremediation technologies.

Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) systems are widely used for monitoring vegetation and forested environments. Those that offer large-scale coverage, short revisiting times, and an under-foliage ...wave-penetration capability have been broadly employed to extract information about the forest structure. Similarly, 3D forest structures that serve as important indicators of productivity and biomass levels can be efficiently estimated using the SAR tomography (TomoSAR) processing technique through multibaseline (MB) image acquisition. This article provides an overview of the main developments in forest TomoSAR during the past two decades.

The aim of this letter is to discuss recent results from the tomographic analysis of the P-band synthetic aperture radar multibaseline data set acquired by ONERA over French Guyana, in the frame of ...the European Space Agency campaign TropiSAR. Such a data set is characterized by a vertical resolution of about 20 m, whereas forest height ranges from 20 to 40 m. These features make it possible to map the 3-D distribution of the scene complex reflectivity in up to three independent layers by coherent focusing, i.e., without assuming any physical model or employing superresolution techniques. The most relevant features within the observed results are the presence of dihedral-like scattering in the ground layer, which is hardly noticeable in the original single-look complex data, and the substantial invariance of the innermost forest layer to topographic slopes.

Migula 1895 (SERP1) and PGP fungal strain
Biourge (SERP03 S) on native serpentine soil (
= 20 for each treatment). Photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) and performance indicators (PI) had the same trends with no significant differences among groups, with Fv/Fms > 1 and PI up to 12. However, the aboveground biomass increased 4-5-fold for single and mixed inoculated plants. The aboveground/belowground dry biomass ratio was higher for plants inoculated with fungi (30), mixed (21), and bacteria (17). The ICP-MS highlighted that single and mixed inocula were able to double the aboveground biomass' P content. Mn metal accumulation significantly increased with both single and mixed PGP inocula, and Zn accumulation increased only with single PGP inocula, whereas Cu accumulation increased twofold only with mixed PGP inocula, but with a low content. Only Ni metal accumulation approached the hyperaccumulation level (Ni > 1000 mg/kg DW) with all treatments. This study demonstrated the ability of selected single and combined PGP strains to significantly increase plant biomass and plant tolerance of metals present in the substrate, resulting in a higher capacity for Ni accumulation in shoots.
The main purpose of the 92/43/EEC Habitats Directive is to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, understood as habitat types and species of the flora and fauna of the European Union. To ...achieve this goal, natural and semi-natural biodiversity as a whole must be recognized and included in its annexes. As for the conservation of biotopes, named habitat types, Italy is unfortunately lacking as it the Annex I does not include important ecosystems that are typical of its territory, rare for biogeographical reasons or threatened. Therefore, the opportunity to identify a first list of significant habitats for central Italy is discussed here. For each of the new proposed types (new habitats or new subtypes) a sheet has been prepared to highlight their salient characteristics. The new proposals concern seven habitat types and one subtype: sedge and reeds formations (Freshwater large sedge and reed beds), willow shrublands (Shrubby willow formations of river banks and fens), Apennine garrigues (Apennine hilly and montane garrigues), a new subtype of Annex I Habitat 6130 (Communities of herbaceous and dwarf shrub-suffrutescent plants of Italian ultramafic substrates), ancient olive groves ("Centuries-old olive groves" with evergreen
Quercus
spp. and arborescent matorral), secondary meadows (Italian submontane and montane pastured meadows dominated by
Cynosurus cristatus
), badlands (Pioneer halophilous and sub-halophilous communities of “calanchi” and “biancane” badlands) and hop-hornbeam woods (Italian-Balkan hop-hornbeam woods).
