Like COVID-19, new infectious disease outbreaks emerge almost annually, and studies predict that this trend will continue due to a variety of factors, including an aging population, ease of travel, ...and globalization of the economy. In response to episodic public health crises, governments and organizations develop, implement, and enforce policies, procedures, protocols, and programs. The epidemiological triad is both a model of disease causation and fundamentally used to design and deploy such control measures. Here we adapt this model to the workplace setting and use the epidemiological triad to characterize the related ethical challenges in implementing the control measures employers face as a guide for a workplace intervention framework. Through this approach, our aim is to show how an integrated ethical framework, grounded in epidemiological principles, has important implications for how we categorize, understand, and resolve the difficult decisions that emerge in the workplace under pandemic conditions.

The market for college students is trending lower and future projections are not encouraging. We must take action to make our programs more competitive. Using in part, the O*NET database, the authors ...propose a set of processes to assess business students' (and particularly management students') career aspirations and to align them with the defined knowledge, skills, and technical abilities needed to make graduates more market ready and more attractive to employers. These changes will create more pull in the market (more organizations will want our graduates) and more push in the market (more students will desire to enter our programs).

Purpose
Medical tourism, characterized by patients leaving their home community to seek health-care services elsewhere, is on the rise globally. In New York state, approximately 5% of the 35,661,559 ...hospital visits in 2018 were non-residents. Although some are visiting New York for other reasons, and unintentionally wind up hospitalized – a percentage of this population come to New York intentionally to seek care. Understanding the make-up, needs and patterns of this population allows hospitals to tailor investments in marketing, technological resources and culturally responsive initiatives to prepare for broadening their patient population and remain competitive globally.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a rich all-hospital discharge data set, the authors identify patterns in diagnoses, treatment and hospital choice of patients who intentionally travel across borders for health care. The authors model the characteristics associated with “elective” admit patients with a multivariate logistic regression approach.
Findings
The authors find that among non-resident patients in New York, domestic travelers, those using insurance plans for payment and women are positively associated with seeking elective inpatient care across border. There are clear patterns of type of treatment that is more likely to be sought, with care for musculoskeletal concerns accounting for more than one-third of all non-resident elective admissions. Proximity also matters, both in terms of patients being more likely to live in a travel zone adjacent to the state, as well as being more likely to seek care from hospitals in counties closest to the borders.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study, using a large set of claims data, that is able to empirically differentiate between patients who travel to NY for the primary purpose of obtaining health care versus those who emergently must access care while traveling for other reasons. This approach can inform future studies seeking to better understand patient migration patterns and strategic educational and marketing initiatives to motivate consumers to cross borders to seek care.

A 10% random sample of 3543 cases litigated in the United States' civil and criminal courts were analysed using logistic regression to develop a model that can predict case outcomes for litigants ...with schizophrenia. Most predictors are related to case characteristics and not to the litigants' antecedents, behaviours or medication issues. Only the psychologist as an expert witness was found to be related to case outcome, but the concern is expressed that inadequate weight is given to expert testimony. Other significant findings include being represented by counsel, atypical medication and malingering.

This article briefly discusses the 10 models of physician compensation, including the incentive structure and how they affect quality of care: 1. fee for service, 2. fee for value, 3. straight ...salary, 4. pay for performance, 5. capitation, 6. bundled payment, 7. Accountable Care Organization, 8. concierge, 9. direct pay contracting, and 10. volunteering. It is true that most physicians and other health care leaders lack control of reimbursement for services from the federal and state government as well as private commercial payers. Yet, it is true that the design or redesign of physician compensation programs falls under the control of health care organizations and that the way in which physicians are paid has an impact, positive or negative, on patient outcomes as well as human resources management outcomes impacting physicians and other caregivers.

Journal Article
Peer reviewed
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to illuminate issues surrounding executive compensation as it relates to current understandings of Islamic business law.Design methodology approach - The ...emerging bodies of literature in the fields of executive compensation and opinions of stock options under Shari'a law are reviewed.Findings - It appears that the trend in offering employee stock options as part of a Shari'a compliant compensation package is acceptable in most cases, yet because of its close association with the more problematic idea of derivative transactions, the company must be vigilant in obtaining the approval from its Shari'a Standards Board before offering it as part of an overall compensation package.Research limitations implications - Existing quantitative data in this area are limited. Given the qualitative, exploratory nature of the design, generalizability is not as robust as other designs.Practical implications - The paper makes recommendations about the inclusion of employee stock options as part of a Shari'a compliant executive compensation package.Originality value - This paper advances the extant literature on the ethics of executive compensation in general as well as adding to the extant literature on Shari'a compliance of executive compensation packages.
