Usu volcano started to erupt on March 31, 2000. The Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) repetitively monitored the surface displacement in and around Usu volcano by digital photogrammetric method ...using stereo aerial photos. The advantage of this method is that it can map the spatial distribution of deformation even in the area where instruments commonly used such as GPS cannot be applied. As a result of the analysis, it was found that; before the eruption of March 31, the uplifted area was concentrated around the cinder cone of Usu volcano. After the eruption began, the uplifted area shifted to Konpira-yama and Nishi-yama area. After April 3, the uplifted area was limited in the area around Nishi-yama.
This paper describes an observation with use of pulse laser of behavior in detail of electrostatically extracted ink jet flight. In this trial, we have learned that randomly or asynchronously flying ...corpuscles can be photographed simultaneously by pulse laser in a bright field scattering image. An application of is also described with respect to continuous tone reproduction. Both cylindrical thread and flying corpuscles of ink jet are utilized in combination through a single outlet nozzle. The former is useful for higher density plottings and the latter for lower density plottings. Such a phenomenon of having plural states in the liquid stream is peculiar to the electrostatically extracted ink jet using dielectric ink.

We have analyzed retrospectively 1,000 consecutive admissions due to acute poisonings over 13 years. Total mortality was 27%. Acute poisonings due to pesticides, therapeutic drugs and other ...substances were 518, 332 and 150 cases with mortalities of 51, 1 and 5%, respectively. The most frequent cause of acute poisoning was paraquat/diquat products, whose mortality reached 76% (220 deaths/291 cases). The second most frequent cause was organophosphate/carbamate products with a mortality of 24% (37/155). When these 2 pesticides are excluded, the mortality was only 3% (15/554). To reduce instances of paraquat/diquat poisoning, dilution of the available product or formulation in other than liquid form would be desirable, because no effective treatment is currently available. In cases of organophosphate/carbamate poisoning, early hospitalization and stabilization is crucial.
A 55-year-old Japanese housewife, who had Osier-Weber-Rendu disease, was admitted to our hospital because of frequent epistaxis and worsening exertional dyspnea. The computed tomography and hepatic ...arteriography revealed large hepatic arteriovenous malformation, which was considered to be the leading cause of her high output heart failure. Two series of hepatic arterial coil embolization procedures were performed to reduce hepatic shunt flow. They temporarily improved her cardiac condition, but gradually induced progressive hepatic failure due to intrahepatic cholangitis. Hepatic dysfunction restricted her quality of life and lead to a fatal clinical course one year after the second coil embolization. (Internal Medicine 38: 962-968, 1999)
DP-TAT-59, (Z)-2-(4-(1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4-isopropylphenyl)-1-butenyl) phenoxy)-N, N-dimethylethylamine, has been reported to inhibit estrogen-stimulated growth of MCF-7 cells as well as rat ...uterus at lower concentrations than the hydroxymetabolite of tamoxifen (4-OH-TAM). In the present study, the growth of mouse Leydig cell tumor, B-1F cells were also more effectively inhibited by DP-TAT-59 than 4-OH-TAM. Additionally, the expression of estrogen responsive element ligated CAT gene transfected into B-1F cells was also suppressed by DP-TAT-59. Thus, the interaction of DP-TAT-59 with estrogen receptor (ER) was characterized and compared with that of 4-OH-TAM using immature rat and bovine uteri. The dissociation constant of DP-TAT-59 to ER of immature rat uterus was 0.24 nM and was similar to that of 4-OH-TAM (Kd = 0.20 nM) and estradiol (Kd = 0.29 nM). Using sucrose density gradients, the sedimentation constant of DP-TAT-59 with bovine uterus was 4.9S, which was similar to that of estradiol (5.1S) and 4-OH-TAM (5.3S). However, the elution profile of the DP-TAT-59-ER complex from a DEAE-Sephadex column was different for both estradiol-and 4-OH-TAM-ER complexes. These results suggest that ER forms different complexes with DP-TAT-59 than estradiol or 4-OH-TAM, while the ER binding affinity of these compounds are similar to each other.
GSI has observed around Ito-City and Mt. Tsukuba using air-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) . It is found that accurate digital elevation models (DEMs) can be made, and we can produce a DEM with ...high data acquisition ratio even in steep topography by combining observations from several directions. As a result, DEMs with less than 10m accuracy in standard deviation were obtained from the both area and 94% of all the grids on the DEM around Mt. Tsukuba were collected through the combination. Further practices, such as, generating ortho images and 3-D images using visualized SAR data and the DEMs were also examined.
