Schizophrenia is a complex mental condition, with key symptoms marked for diagnosis including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, reduced emotional expression, and social dysfunction. ...In the context of major developmental hypotheses of schizophrenia, notably those concerning maternal immune activation and neuroinflammation, we studied
expression and content in the postmortem brain tissue of 10 schizophrenia and 10 control subjects. In the medial orbitofrontal cortex (Brodmann's area 11/12) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (area 46) from both hemispheres of six schizophrenia subjects, the
mRNA expression was significantly higher than in six control brains (
< 0.05). As the expression difference was highest for the medial orbitofrontal cortex in the right hemisphere, we assessed NLRP1-immunoreactive pyramidal neurons in layers III, V, and VI in the medial orbitofrontal cortex in the right hemisphere of seven schizophrenia and five control brains. Compared to controls, we quantified a significantly higher number of NLRP1-positive pyramidal neurons in the schizophrenia brains (
< 0.01), suggesting NLRP1 inflammasome activation in schizophrenia subjects. Layer III pyramidal neuron dysfunction aligns with working memory deficits, while impairments of pyramidal neurons in layers V and VI likely disrupt predictive processing. We propose NLRP1 inflammasome as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in schizophrenia.

The article presents the basic principles of health care, health care measures and strategic objectives of these measures in Croatia. The health of the population does not depend solely on the ...activities of the health care system but also on various demographic indicators. Our success in implementing health care depends largely on the structure of health facilities and health workers. The Croatian health system in late 2013 had permanently employed 74,489 workers. Out of these, 77% were health care workers. Most health care workers had only secondary school education (37.7%); physicians represented 17.4% of the workforce. On assessing the health of the population, certain health indicators are of utmost importance. The leading cause of deaths were circulatory diseases (in 2012, 24,988 persons died, 585.5/100,000). Neoplasms were the cause of death in 13,940 persons (326.6/100,000), then injuries and poisoning (69.1/100,000), diseases of the gastrointestinal system (53.1/100,000), and respiratory diseases (50.4/100,000). Data are presented on the basis of diseases reported from several national registries (cancer, psychoactive drug abuse, the disabled, diabetes, and suicides). The importance of vaccination for the control of infectious diseases in Croatia is especially emphasized, as well as the experience and excellent results achieved in this area. The epidemiological situation in Croatia in terms of infectious diseases can be assessed as favorable. This is due to the general living conditions, which contributed to the entire health system, making Croatia equal to other developed countries of Europe and throughout the world.

Primary spinal melanomas are extremely rare lesions. In 1906, Hirschberg reported the first primary spinal melanoma, and since then only 40 new cases have been reported. A 47-year-old man was ...admitted suffering from low back pain, fatigue and loss of body weight persisting for three months. He had a 17-year-old history of an operated primary spinal melanoma from T7-T9, which had remained stable for these 17 years. Routine laboratory findings and clinical symptoms aroused suspicion of a metastatic disease. Multislice computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed stage-IV melanoma with thoracic, abdominal and skeletal metastases without the recurrence of the primary process. Transiliac crest core bone biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic melanoma. It is important to know that in all cases of back ore skeletal pain and unexplained weight loss, malignancy must always be considered in the differential diagnosis, especially in the subjects with a positive medical history. Patients who have back, skeletal, or joint pain that is unresponsive to a few weeks of conservative treatment or have known risk factors with or without serious etiology, are candidates for imaging studies. The present case demonstrates that complete surgical resection alone may result in a favourable outcome, but regular medical follow-up for an extended period, with the purpose of an early detection of a metastatic disease, is highly recommended.

The aim of the present study was to detect and characterise the species and subspecies of Babesia spp. that cause canine babesiosis in Croatia. Twenty-eight dogs with typical signs of babesiosis ...(lethargy, anorexia, fever, dark urine and thrombocytopenia) were included in this study. Their blood smears showed the presence of Babesia canis . The results showed the detection of one subspecies, namely Babesia canis canis using PCR, and subsequent sequence analysis demonstrated portions of the nss rRNA gene in 27 out of 28 samples. Sequence analysis of the isolates showed 100% identity in 11 samples, 99.7% identity (one nucleotide difference) in 11 samples and 99.4% identity (two nucleotides difference) in 5 samples with B. canis canis . The results of this study confirm the presence of B. canis canis in infected dogs in Croatia and demonstrate a slightly new genetic variant of Babesia subspecies.

The advent of distributed energy resources in conjunction with recent developments in the context of smart embedded devices has fostered the increased integration of intelligent generators and ...prosumers into the energy system. As a consequence, previously passively operated grids have become highly dynamic environments, which require active monitoring and control. To allow for such monitoring and control, grid operators require lightweight SCADA-like functionality that can be flexibly adapted to dynamic grid contexts and is suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems. Grid Watch Dog enables system operators to create monitoring and control rules for low-voltage field devices on the fly, and to immediately deploy them in the field. The system combines a stream reasoner on field devices with an intuitive user interface for creating and managing rules. Grid Watch Dog has been implemented as a proof of concept in a smart grid testbed and we demonstrate its application in the context of monitoring a battery energy storage system.
Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) aims to provide the surgeon with the right type of assistance at the right moment. Such assistance systems are especially relevant in laparoscopic surgery, where CAS ...can alleviate some of the drawbacks that surgeons incur. For many assistance functions, e.g. displaying the location of a tumor at the appropriate time or suggesting what instruments to prepare next, analyzing the surgical workflow is a prerequisite. Since laparoscopic interventions are performed via endoscope, the video signal is an obvious sensor modality to rely on for workflow analysis. Image-based workflow analysis tasks in laparoscopy, such as phase recognition, skill assessment, video indexing or automatic annotation, require a temporal distinction between video frames. Generally computer vision based methods that generalize from previously seen data are used. For training such methods, large amounts of annotated data are necessary. Annotating surgical data requires expert knowledge, therefore collecting a sufficient amount of data is difficult, time-consuming and not always feasible. In this paper, we address this problem by presenting an unsupervised method for training a convolutional neural network (CNN) to differentiate between laparoscopic video frames on a temporal basis. We extract video frames at regular intervals from 324 unlabeled laparoscopic interventions, resulting in a dataset of approximately 2.2 million images. From this dataset, we extract image pairs from the same video and train a CNN to determine their temporal order. To solve this problem, the CNN has to extract features that are relevant for comprehending laparoscopic workflow. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such a CNN can be adapted for surgical workflow segmentation. We performed image-based workflow segmentation on a publicly available dataset of 7 cholecystectomies and 9 colorectal interventions.
Uspješnost provođenja zdravstvene zaštite u velikoj mjeri ovisi o strukturi zdravstvenih ustanova i zdravstvenih djelatnika. Slijede ozljede i otrovanja (69,1/100.000), bolesti probavnog sustava (53,1/100.000) i bolesti dišnog sustava (50,4/100.000). Takvo stanje izjednačuje Hrvatsku s razvijenim zemljama Europe i svijeta.
