The fabrication and characterization of fibers that are ultrastretchable and have metallic electrical conductivity are described. The fibers consist of a liquid metal alloy, eutectic gallium indium ...(EGaIn), injected into the core of stretchable hollow fibers composed of a triblock copolymer, polystyrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene (SEBS) resin. The hollow fibers are easy to mass‐produce with controlled size using commercially available melt processing methods. The fibers are similar to conventional metallic wires, but can be stretched orders of magnitude further while retaining electrical conductivity. Mechanical measurements with and without the liquid metal inside the fibers show the liquid core has a negligible impact on the mechanical properties of the fibers, which is in contrast to most conductive composite fibers. The fibers also maintain the same tactile properties with and without the metal. Electrical measurements show that the fibers increase resistance as the fiber elongates and the cross sectional area narrows. Fibers with larger diameters change from a triangular to a more circular cross‐section during stretching, which has the appeal of lowering the resistance below that predicted by theory. To demonstrate their utility, the ultrastretchable fibers are used as stretchable wires for earphones and for a battery charger and perform as well as their conventional parts.

Dietary supplementation has traditionally consisted of adding vitamins and/or minerals to correct or prevent a nutritional deficiency. When supplementing the diet with other inflammatory mediators, ...such as essential fatty acids, there is an adjunctive benefit to the standard therapies used in the control of chronic inflammatory diseases such as Crohn’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis. This review focuses on the strategies utilized for therapeutic modulation of the inflammatory cascade through dietary supplementation with specific biomolecules. Examples of how these biomolecules affect local and systemic immune responses to chronic inflammation are examined. In particular, an overview of the literature identifying the potential to modify the host response to chronic periodontitis is provided.

The prognostic significance of tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) response in cutaneous melanoma is controversial. This analysis of data from a prospective, randomized trial included patients with ...cutaneous melanoma > or = 1.0 mm Breslow thickness who underwent wide local excision and sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine factors associated with TIL response, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS). A total of 515 patients were included; TIL response was classified as "brisk" (n = 100; 19.4%) or "non-brisk" (n = 415; 80.6%). Patients in the nonbrisk TIL group were more likely to have tumor-positive SLN (17.6% vs 7%; P = 0.0087). On multivariate analysis, nonbrisk TIL response, increased tumor thickness, and ulceration were significant independent predictors of tumor-positive SLN. By Kaplan-Meier analysis, 5-year DFS rate was 91 per cent for those with a brisk TIL response compared with 86 per cent in the nonbrisk group (P = 0.41). The 5-year OS rates were 95 per cent versus 84 per cent in the brisk versus nonbrisk TIL groups, respectively (P = 0.0083). However, on multivariate analysis, TIL response was not a significant independent factor predicting DFS or OS. TIL response is a significant predictor of SLN metastasis but is not a major predictor of DFS or OS.

Daratumumab is an anti-CD38 mAb, used frequently in combination with lenalidomide and pomalidomide. No studies compared daratumumab plus lenalidomide and dexamethasone (DRd) to daratumumab plus ...pomalidomide and dexamethasone (DPd) in lenalidomide-exposed multiple myeloma. We identified 504 consecutive multiple myeloma patients who received daratumumab at Mayo Clinic between January 2015 and April 2019. We excluded patients who received daratumumab in the first line, received more than four lines of therapy prior to daratumumab use, did not receive lenalidomide prior to daratumumab, or had an unknown status of lenalidomide exposure, and patients who received daratumumab combinations other than DRd or DPd. We examined the impact of using DRd compared to DPd on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. Out of 504 patients, 162 received DRd or DPd and were included; 67 were lenalidomide-exposed and 95 were lenalidomide-refractory. DRd was used in 76 (47%) and DPd in 86 (53%) patients. In lenalidomide-exposed multiple myeloma, there was no difference in median PFS; 34.2 months 95% confidence interval (CI), 22.8-44.6 for DRd compared to 25.2 months (95% CI, 4.9-35.3) for DPd, P = 0.2. In lenalidomide-refractory multiple myeloma, there was no difference in median PFS; 18.6 months (95% CI, 13-32) for DRd compared to 9 months (95% CI, 5.2-14.6) for DPd, P = 0.09. No difference in median OS was observed in DRd compared to DPd. Our study shows combining daratumumab with lenalidomide in patients with prior lenalidomide use is a viable and effective treatment option.
Immunotherapy targeting the programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) receptor has demonstrated tremendous promise in the treatment of advanced solid tumors. Dermatologic toxicities, however, are an emerging ...consequence of this therapy and have been clearly associated with immune checkpoint blockade antibodies. Distinctive clinical and histologic subtypes of dermatologic toxicity secondary to immunotherapy are emerging and include rare autoimmune bullous reactions (eg, bullous pemphigoid) and lichenoid eruptions. We report three patients who developed lichenoid dermatitis while receiving anti-PD-1 antibody therapy. The mean time to onset of lichenoid dermatologic toxicity was 42 days (range: 1-75 days) from initiation of anti-PD-1 antibody therapy. Lesions most frequently presented on the extremities and trunk as pustules, papules, and plaques. The face was not commonly involved. Of the five skin biopsies examined, all demonstrated dense band-like lymphocytic infiltrate, hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis, saw-tooth rete ridge pattern, and dyskeratosis. Acanthosis was a feature in all of the skin biopsies, and in one, epidermal hyperplasia was prominent. In several skin biopsies, histologic features supporting a lichenoid drug eruption were present, including parakeratosis, spongiosis, periadnexal/perivascular inflammation, and eosinophils. Furthermore, the histologic features varied in skin biopsy specimens taken from the same patient at different sites, supporting a drug reaction. All patients' skin lesions improved with use of steroids: two were treated with topical steroids and one with systemic steroids. Recognition of the histopathologic patterns of dermatologic toxicities resulting from immune checkpoint blockade therapy will become increasingly important for ensuring appropriate management of dermatologic toxicities and optimal patient care.
Integrating nanometre sized pores into hybrid organic-inorganic interconnect layers is one of the key approaches being undertaken by the semiconductor industry to sustain the continued scale down of ...micro-electronic devices. While increasing porosity of the layers achieves the desirable lowering of the dielectric constant (k), it also has the potential to reduce mechanical and thermal stability and degrade device functionality. We report on Brillouin light scattering to measure the independent elastic constants, and thus the mechanical properties, of ultrathin dielectric films with porosity levels up to 45%, the highest in the industry. Longitudinal and transverse acoustic standing mode type excitations were observed from sub 200 nm thick low-k thin films, and their frequency dispersion and associated light scattering intensities were utilized to determine Poisson's ratio (ν) and Young's modulus (E). In comparison with SiO2 and non-porous low-k materials, significant modifications were found in ν and E of these highly porous carbon-doped SiO2 (Si-O-C-H) and amorphous carbon (a-C : H) low-k interlayer dielectrics.
Previous research has illustrated that physical educators feel their subject is valued less than others in the context of schools. However, to date, no instruments have been developed to measure ...physical education teachers' perceptions of mattering. This study sought to propose and validate the Perceived Mattering Questionnaire - Physical Education (PMQ-PE). In total, 460 physical educators completed an online survey that measured perceived mattering, role stress, and resilience. Data analysis began with exploratory factor analysis to identify a stable two-factor structure that measured physical educators' perceptions that they matter and that the discipline of physical education matters. Next, confirmatory factor analysis was used to affirm the factor structure and to examine convergent, discriminant, and divergent validity. The model was a good fit for the data and the PMQ-PE correlated positively with resilience and negatively with role stress. These analyses support initial validation of the PMQ-PE. (Autor).

Polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) are promising candidates for a wide range of technological applications due to their single ion conductivity and good mechanical properties. Tuning the glass ...transition temperature (T g) in these materials constitutes a major strategy to improve room temperature conductivity while controlling their mechanical properties. In this work, we show experimental and simulation results demonstrating that in these materials T g does not follow a universal scaling behavior with the volume of the structural units V m (including monomer and counterion). Instead, T g is significantly influenced by the chain flexibility and polymer dielectric constant. We propose a simplified empirical model that includes the electrostatic interactions and chain flexibility to describe T g in PolyILs. Our model enables design of new functional PolyILs with the desired T g.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection causes devastating congenital abnormities and Guillain-Barré syndrome. The ZIKV envelope (E) protein is responsible for viral entry and represents a major determinant for ...viral pathogenesis. Like other flaviviruses, the ZIKV E protein is glycosylated at amino acid N154. To study the function of E glycosylation, we generated a recombinant N154Q ZIKV that lacks the E glycosylation and analyzed the mutant virus in mammalian and mosquito hosts. In mouse models, the mutant was attenuated, as evidenced by lower viremia, decreased weight loss, and no mortality; however, knockout of E glycosylation did not significantly affect neurovirulence. Mice immunized with the mutant virus developed a robust neutralizing antibody response and were completely protected from wild-type ZIKV challenge. In mosquitoes, the mutant virus exhibited diminished oral infectivity for the Aedes aegypti vector. Collectively, the results demonstrate that E glycosylation is critical for ZIKV infection of mammalian and mosquito hosts.

Inflammation can trigger lasting phenotypes in immune and non-immune cells. Whether and how human infections and associated inflammation can form innate immune memory in hematopoietic stem and ...progenitor cells (HSPC) has remained unclear. We found that circulating HSPC, enriched from peripheral blood, captured the diversity of bone marrow HSPC, enabling investigation of their epigenomic reprogramming following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Alterations in innate immune phenotypes and epigenetic programs of HSPC persisted for months to 1 year following severe COVID-19 and were associated with distinct transcription factor (TF) activities, altered regulation of inflammatory programs, and durable increases in myelopoiesis. HSPC epigenomic alterations were conveyed, through differentiation, to progeny innate immune cells. Early activity of IL-6 contributed to these persistent phenotypes in human COVID-19 and a mouse coronavirus infection model. Epigenetic reprogramming of HSPC may underlie altered immune function following infection and be broadly relevant, especially for millions of COVID-19 survivors.

Severe COVID-19 can reprogram hematopoiesis and establish epigenetic memory in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) and progeny myeloid cells for up to 1 year. These durable alterations, which could affect post-infection immune responses and equilibrium, are controlled in part by the activity of IL-6 during acute disease.
