The sonographic findings in 101 cats with splenic abnormalities are presented. Diagnosis was made by ultrasound‐guided fine needle aspirate or fine‐needle biopsy (n= 91), ultrasound‐guided core ...biopsy (n= 1), surgical core biopsy (n= 1), or necropsy (n= 10). Two cats had more than one diagnostic procedure (fine needle aspirate and necropsy or core biopsy and necropsy). The splenic abnormalities included lymphosarcoma (n= 30), mast cell tumor (n= 27), extramedullary hematopoiesis and/or lymphoid hyperplasia (n= 27), epithelial tumors (n= 6), mesenchymal tumors (n= 4), malignant histiocytosis (n= 2), myeloproliferative disease (n= 2), pyogranulomatous inflammation (n= 2), erythroleukemia (n= 1), eosinophilic syndrome (n= 1), hematoma (n= 1), and granulomatous splenitis (n= 1). Three cats had more than one splenic abnormality (mast cell tumor and metastatic carcinoma, pyogranulomatous inflammation and lymphoid hyperplasia, histiocytic lymphosarcoma, and lymphoid hyperplasia). Pathognomonic changes were not seen for any of the diseases.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Emile Mâle provided Christian iconography with the status of a distinct science. During the first half of the century, historians of art created the techniques which would give rise to a new religious iconography, founded on the interconnexions of meaning and form. During the second half of the century, historians discovered in images a source for the history of Christianity, one which can be subjected to quantitative analysis, while at the same preserving the heritage of the historians of art Research gives pride of place to actuel lived religion — hence the perception (which is not purely visual) and the " practice " of the image, which m turn requires specific types of scholarly treatment, one whose anthropological objective owes much to Alphonse Dupront.

The precursors of platelet dense granules were studied in megakaryocytes (MK) from animal species using standard fixation, cytochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy. With standard fixation, ...clear vesicles bounded by a sharp membrane were considered precursors of dense granules because: (1) They were replaced by uranaffin granules, which is a cytochemical reaction that is specific for adenine nucleotide storing organelles. (2) They were distinguished from alpha granules by their clear content and from cross sections of demarcation membrane canaliculi or endoplasmic reticulum by their clear content, sharp membrane and absence of fibrillar material coating their luminal side or ribosomes on their cytoplasmic side. (3) They were not penetrated by tannic acid and horseradish peroxidase, eliminating the possibility of communication with the demarcation membrane system. (4) Clear vesicles and uranaffin granules are virtually absent in MK from cattle with the Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) whose platelets have a dense granule storage pool deficiency (SPD). The absence of platelet dense granule-related amine uptake processes coupled with the virtual absence of stored adenine nucleotides and the absence of recognizable dense granule precursors and uranaffin granules within MK, suggested that the platelet SPD associated with bovine CHS results from an anatomic deficiency of dense granules. The ultrastructure of lysosomes from MK and platelets of normal and CHS cattle was studied using acid phosphatase histochemistry which localized the enzyme in the trans aspect of the Golgi complex and/or granules in MK at all stages of maturity. The numerous secondary lysosomes in platelets and MK suggested that lysosomes may play an active role during the maturation of MK and in circulating platelets. Lysosomes in MK and platelets from CHS cattle were not significantly enlarged. Why lysosomes are enlarged in most other cell types with CHS but not in MK and platelets is not understood and further emphasizes our lack of knowledge concerning the function of MK and platelet lysosomes.
Platelets from cattle with the Chédiak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) have a storage pool deficiency and virtual absence of platelet dense granules. Megakaryocytes (MKs) from five control (n = 135) and five ...CHS (n = 133) cattle were evaluated using standard transmission electron microscopy. Osmiophilic dense granules were not observed in control or CHS MKs. In MKs from normal cattle, clear vesicles of 200- to 650-nm diameter bounded by a sharp membrane were observed. They were easily differentiated from the demarcation membrane system, endoplasmic reticulum, and α granules. The clear vesicles were virtually absent in MKs from CHS cattle at all stages of maturation. MKs in bone marrow samples from two control (n = 91) and two CHS (n = 61) cattle that had been processed for the uranaffin reaction were also evaluated. The clear vesicles were replaced by uranaffin-positive granules in MKs from control cattle, but positive uranaffin granules were not observed in CHS MKs. These findings indicate that the platelet dense granule storage pool deficiency in CHS cattle results from an anatomic absence of dense granule precursors in maturing and mature CHS MKs.

The problem of the study is to examine the comparative effects of the Laban elements of (1) Weight, Flow, Time, and Space, and (2) Non-Laban based verbal instruction upon the performance of high ...school choral ensembles consisting of high and low levels of music aptitude. Chapter I summarizes the pedagogies of conducting through the work of Elizabeth Green, Max Rudolf, Eric Ericson and Wilhelm Ehmann. An introduction to the philosophy of Laban Effort/Shape as it relates to conducting pedagogy is discussed. Chapter II provides a review of the literature relating to conducting pedagogy. Descriptive studies by Leyden (1968), Lewis (1977), Patterson (1984), Graves (1984), Bartee (1977) and de Moura Silva (1983) are summarized. Experimental studies by Jordan (1986), and Miller (1988) are also summarized. A detailed description of Effort/Shape of Rudolf von Laban and its application to conducting pedagogy and rhythm training is detailed. Chapter III includes the design and analysis of the actual study. Two groups of choral ensembles, labelled as Laban and Non-Laban groups, received five hours of instruction in either Laban based or conventional rehearsals on three selections from Four Slovak Folksongs by Bela Bartok. After the instruction concluded, each group's performance was professionally recorded. The recordings were submitted to three judges who rated the performances using a five-dimension continuous rating scale. Data was analyzed using ANOVA. Chapter IV discusses the results and interpretation of the study. Tables show the results of the ANOVA and a comparison of the mean scores of the rating scale and the aptitude scores of the two groups. Results of the ANOVA show a significance of 37.8 between the Laban and Non-Laban groups indicating that Laban treatment may have caused the significance. Chapter V discusses the conclusions of the study for future research based upon the data that were obtained. It was concluded that instruction using Laban Effort/Shape was superior to instruction using conventional verbal instruction when comparing the performance capabilities of choral ensembles that were similar in music aptitude. Recommendations for further study suggest experimental designs that study the relationship, if any, between gesture and choral ensemble rhythmicity.
