ABSTRACT
We present ground-based optical transmission spectroscopy of the low-density hot Jupiter WASP-88b covering the wavelength range of 4413−8333 Å with the FOcal Reducer Spectrograph (FORS2) on ...the Very Large Telescope. The FORS2 white light curves exhibit a significant time-correlated noise that we model using a Gaussian process and remove as a wavelength-independent component from the spectroscopic light curves. We analyse complementary photometric observations from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and refine the system properties and ephemeris. We find a featureless transmission spectrum with increased absorption towards shorter wavelengths. We perform an atmospheric retrieval analysis with the aura code, finding tentative evidence for haze in the upper atmospheric layers and a lower likelihood for a dense cloud deck. While our retrieval analysis results point towards clouds and hazes, further evidence is needed to definitively reject a clear-sky scenario.
Abstract
We present a ground-based optical transmission spectrum for the warm Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-110b from two transit observations made with the FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph on the Very ...Large Telescope. The spectrum covers the wavelength range from 4000–8333 Å, which is binned in 46 transit depths measured to an averaged precision of 220 parts per million (ppm) over an averaged 80 Å bin for a Vmag = 12.8 star. The measured transit depths are unaffected by a dilution from a close A-type field dwarf, which was fully resolved. The overall main characteristic of the transmission spectrum is an increasing radius with wavelength and a lack of the theoretically predicted pressure-broadened sodium and potassium absorption features for a cloud-free atmosphere. We analyze archival high-resolution optical spectroscopy and find evidence for low to moderate activity of the host star, which we take into account in the atmospheric retrieval analysis. Using the AURA retrieval code, we find that the observed transmission spectrum can be best explained by a combination of unocculted stellar faculae and a cloud deck. Transmission spectra of cloud-free and hazy atmospheres are rejected at a high confidence. With a possible cloud deck at its terminator, WASP-110b joins the increasing population of irradiated hot-Jupiter exoplanets with cloudy atmospheres observed in transmission.
We present the discovery of three sub-Neptune-sized planets transiting the nearby and bright Sun-like star HD 191939 (TIC 269701147, TOI 1339), a Ks = 7.18 mag G8 V dwarf at a distance of only 54 pc. ...We validate the planetary nature of the transit signals by combining 5 months of data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite with follow-up ground-based photometry, archival optical images, radial velocities, and high angular resolution observations. The three sub-Neptunes have similar radii ( , , and ), and their orbits are consistent with a stable, circular, and coplanar architecture near mean-motion resonances of 1:3 and 3:4 (Pb = 8.88, Pc = 28.58, and Pd = 38.35 days). The HD 191939 system is an excellent candidate for precise mass determinations of the planets with high-resolution spectroscopy due to the host star's brightness and low chromospheric activity. Moreover, the system's compact and near-resonant nature can provide an independent way to measure planetary masses via transit timing variations while also enabling dynamical and evolutionary studies. Finally, as a promising target for multiwavelength transmission spectroscopy of all three planets' atmospheres, HD 191939 can offer valuable insight into multiple sub-Neptunes born from a protoplanetary disk that may have resembled that of the early Sun.
ABSTRACT
We present an optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-101b. We observed three primary transits with Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, covering ...a wavelength range from 0.3 to 1 $\mu$m. The observations suffer from significant systematics that we model using Gaussian Processes. Kernel selection for the Gaussian Processes is performed in a data-driven approach through Bayesian model comparison. We find a flat and featureless transmission spectrum, corroborating a previous measurement obtained with HST/Wide-Field Camera 3 in the 1–1.7 $\mu$m range. The spectrum is consistent with high-altitude clouds located at less than 100 $\mu$bar. This cloud layer completely blocks our view into deeper parts of the atmosphere and makes WASP-101b the cloudiest gas giant observed so far. We compute a series of temperature-pressure profiles for WASP-101b and compare these to condensation curves for cloud particles, which match clouds composed of silicates. We also include 13 transits observed with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and use these to refine system parameters.
Abstract
We present the most complete emission spectrum for inflated hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b combining new Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera/G141 spectrum from the Hubble Panchromatic ...Comparative Exoplanet Treasury program with archival Spitzer eclipse observations. We found a near blackbody-like emission spectrum, which is best fitted with an isothermal temperature–pressure (TP) profile, that agrees well with the dayside heat redistribution scenario assuming zero Bond albedo. The noninverted TP profile is consistent with the nondetection of near-UV/optical absorbers in the transit spectra. We do not find any evidence for significant H
−
opacity nor a metal-rich atmosphere. HAT-P-41b is an ideal target that sits in the transitioning parameter space between hot and ultra-hot Jupiters, and future James Webb Space Telescope observations will help us to better constrain the thermal structure and chemical composition.
We present a uniform analysis of transit observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope of two warm gas giants orbiting K-type stars—WASP-29b and WASP-80b. The transmission ...spectra, which span 0.4–5.0μm, are interpreted using a suite of chemical equilibrium PLATON atmospheric retrievals. Both planets show evidence of significant aerosol opacity along the day–night terminator. The spectrum of WASP-29b is flat throughout the visible and near-infrared, suggesting the presence of condensate clouds extending to low pressures. The lack of spectral features hinders our ability to constrain the atmospheric metallicity and C/O ratio. In contrast, WASP-80b shows a discernible, albeit muted H2O absorption feature at 1.4μm, as well as a steep optical spectral slope that is caused by fine-particle aerosols and/or contamination from unocculted spots on the variable host star. WASP-80b joins the small number of gas-giant exoplanets that show evidence for enhanced atmospheric metallicity: the transmission spectrum is consistent with metallicities ranging from∼30–100 times solar in the case of cloudy limbs to a few hundred times solar in the cloud-free scenario. In addition to the detection of water, we infer the presence of CO2in the atmosphere of WASP-80b based on the enhanced transit depth in the Spitzer 4.5μm bandpass. From a complementary analysis of Spitzer secondary eclipses, we find that the day side emission from WASP-29b and WASP-80b is consistent with brightness temperatures of 937±48 and 851±14 K, respectively, indicating relatively weak day–night heat transport and low Bond albedo.
We present a transmission spectrum for the Neptune-sized exoplanet HD 106315c from optical to infrared wavelengths based on transit observations from the Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3, ...K2, and Spitzer. The spectrum shows tentative evidence for a water absorption feature in the 1.1–1.7 μm wavelength range with a small amplitude of 30 ppm (corresponding to just 0.8 ± 0.04 atmospheric scale heights). Based on an atmospheric retrieval analysis, the presence of water vapor is tentatively favored with a Bayes factor of 1.7–2.6 (depending on prior assumptions). The spectrum is most consistent with either an enhanced metallicity or high-altitude condensates, or both. Cloud-free solar composition atmospheres are ruled out at >5σ confidence. We compare the spectrum to grids of cloudy and hazy forward models and find that the spectrum is fit well by models with moderate cloud lofting or haze formation efficiency over a wide range of metallicities (1–100× solar). We combine the constraints on the envelope composition with an interior structure model and estimate that the core mass fraction is ≳0.3. With a bulk composition reminiscent of that of Neptune and an orbital distance of 0.15 au, HD 106315c hints that planets may form out of broadly similar material and arrive at vastly different orbits later in their evolution.
Abstract Here we present a thermal emission spectrum of WASP-79b, obtained via Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 G141 observations as part of the PanCET program. As we did not observe the ...ingress or egress of WASP-79b’s secondary eclipse, we consider two scenarios: a fixed mid-eclipse time based on the expected occurrence time, and a mid-eclipse time as a free parameter. In both scenarios, we can measure thermal emission from WASP-79b from 1.1 to 1.7 μ m at 2.4 σ confidence consistent with a 1900 K brightness temperature for the planet. We combine our observations with Spitzer dayside photometry (3.6 and 4.5 μ m) and compare these observations to a grid of atmospheric forward models that span a range of metallicities, carbon-to-oxygen ratios, and recirculation factors. Given the strength of the planetary emission and the precision of our measurements, we found a wide range of forward models to be consistent with our data. The best-match equilibrium model suggests that WASP-79b’s dayside has a solar metallicity and carbon-to-oxygen ratio, alongside a recirculation factor of 0.75. Models including significant H − opacity provide the best match to WASP-79b’s emission spectrum near 1.58 μ m. However, models featuring high-temperature cloud species—formed via vigorous vertical mixing and low sedimentation efficiencies—with little day-to-night energy transport also match WASP-79b’s emission spectrum. Given the broad range of equilibrium chemistry, disequilibrium chemistry, and cloudy atmospheric models consistent with our observations of WASP-79b’s dayside emission, further observations will be necessary to constrain WASP-79b’s dayside atmospheric properties.
Abstract Exoplanets with cloud-free, haze-free atmospheres at the pressures probed by transmission spectroscopy represent a valuable opportunity for detailed atmospheric characterization and precise ...chemical abundance constraints. We present the first optical to infrared (0.3−5 μ m) transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-62b, measured with Hubble/STIS and Spitzer/IRAC. The spectrum is characterized by a 5.1 σ detection of Na i absorption at 0.59 μ m, in which the pressure-broadened wings of the Na D-lines are observed from space for the first time. A spectral feature at 0.4 μ m is tentatively attributed to SiH at 2.1 σ confidence. Our retrieval analyses are consistent with a cloud-free atmosphere without significant contamination from stellar heterogeneities. We simulate James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations, for a combination of instrument modes, to assess the atmospheric characterization potential of WASP-62b. We demonstrate that JWST can conclusively detect Na, H 2 O, FeH, NH 3 , CO, CO 2 , CH 4 , and SiH within the scope of its Early Release Science (ERS) program. As the only transiting giant planet currently known in the JWST Continuous Viewing Zone, WASP-62b could prove a benchmark giant exoplanet for detailed atmospheric characterization in the James Webb era.
Abstract
Planets are like children with each one being unique and special. A better understanding of their collective properties requires a deeper understanding of each planet. Here we add the ...transit and eclipse spectra of hot-Jupiter WASP-74b into the ever growing data set of exoplanet atmosphere spectral library. With six transits and three eclipses using the Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer), we present the most complete and precise atmospheric spectra of WASP-74b. We found no evidence for TiO/VO nor super-Rayleigh scattering reported in previous studies. The transit shows a muted water feature with strong Rayleigh scattering extending into the infrared. The eclipse shows a featureless blackbody-like WFC3/G141 spectrum and a weak methane absorption feature in the Spitzer 3.6
μ
m band. Future James Webb Space Telescope follow-up observations are needed to confirm these results.
