A polarimeter was constructed to measure the longitudinal polarization of a spin-polarized electron beam at 5 and 7 MeV. The polarimeter takes advantage of Compton scattering between circularly ...polarized bremsstrahlung photons produced by a longitudinally polarized electron beam striking a copper radiator and the spin-polarized electrons orbiting the iron atoms of an analyzing magnet. This so-called Compton transmission polarimeter is compact and relatively inexpensive compared to Mott-scattering polarimeters because no spin manipulator is required. This work presents the design of the radiator, analyzing magnet, photon detector assembly, and data acquisition system of the Compton transmission polarimeter as well as beam commissioning results performed at the Upgraded Injector Test Facility at Jefferson Lab.

Double-spin asymmetries and absolute cross sections were measured at large Bjorken x (0.25≤x≤0.90), in both the deep-inelastic and resonance regions, by scattering longitudinally polarized electrons ...at beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV from a transversely and longitudinally polarized (3)He target. In this dedicated experiment, the spin structure function g(2)((3)He) was determined with precision at large x, and the neutron twist-3 matrix element d(2)(n) was measured at ⟨Q(2)⟩ of 3.21 and 4.32 GeV(2)/c(2), with an absolute precision of about 10(-5). Our results are found to be in agreement with lattice QCD calculations and resolve the disagreement found with previous data at ⟨Q(2)⟩=5 GeV(2)/c(2). Combining d(2)(n) and a newly extracted twist-4 matrix element f(2)(n), the average neutron color electric and magnetic forces were extracted and found to be of opposite sign and about 30 MeV/fm in magnitude.

We present measurements of the ep->ep pi^0 cross section extracted at two values of four-momentum transfer Q^2=1.9 GeV^2 and Q^2=2.3 GeV^2 at Jefferson Lab Hall A. The kinematic range allows to study ...the evolution of the extracted hadronic tensor as a function of Q^2 and W. Results will be confronted with Regge inspired calculations and GPD predictions. An intepretation of our data within the framework of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering has also been attempted.

We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_{1} of the neutron and 3He using a polarized 3He target in the ...four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c);{2}. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_{1} down to at least Q;{2}=1.8 (GeV/c);{2} in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q2 dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c);{2}.

The five-fold differential cross section for the 12C B reaction was determined over a missing momentum range of 200-400 , in a kinematics regime with and . A comparison of the results with previous ...lower missing momentum data and with theoretical models are presented. The extracted distorted momentum distribution is shown to be consistent with previous data and extends the range of available data up to 400 . The theoretical calculations are from two very different approaches, one mean field and the other short range correlated; yet for this system the two approaches show striking agreement with the data and each other up to a missing momentum value of 325 . For larger momenta, the calculations diverge which is likely due to the factorization approximation used in the short range approach.
We present a study of high energy photodisintegration of proton-pairs through the γ+He3→p+p+n channel. Photon energies, Eγ, from 0.8 to 4.7 GeV were used in kinematics corresponding to a proton pair ...with high relative momentum and a neutron nearly at rest. The s−11 scaling of the cross section, as predicted by the constituent counting rule for two nucleon photodisintegration, was observed for the first time. The onset of the scaling is at a higher energy and the cross section is significantly lower than for deuteron (pn pair) photodisintegration. For Eγ below the scaling region, the scaled cross section was found to present a strong energy-dependent structure not observed in deuteron photodisintegration.

We present the first measurement of the Q{sup 2} dependence of the neutron spin structure function g{sub 2}{sup n} at five kinematic points covering 0.57 (GeV/c){sup 2}{<=}Q{sup 2}{<=}1.34 ...(GeV/c){sup 2} at x{approx_equal}0.2. Though the naive quark-parton model predicts g{sub 2}=0, nonzero values occur in more realistic models of the nucleon which include quark-gluon correlations, finite quark masses, or orbital angular momentum. When scattering from a noninteracting quark, g{sub 2}{sup n} can be predicted using next-to-leading order fits to world data for g{sub 1}{sup n}. Deviations from this prediction provide an opportunity to examine QCD dynamics in nucleon structure. Our results show a positive deviation from this prediction at lower Q{sup 2}, indicating that contributions such as quark-gluon interactions may be important. Precision data obtained for g{sub 1}{sup n} are consistent with next-to-leading order fits to world data.

High precision measurements of induced and transferred recoil proton polarization in d(γ→,p→)n have been performed for photon energies of 277–357 MeV and θcm=20°–120°. The measurements were motivated ...by a longstanding discrepancy between meson–baryon model calculations and data at higher energies. At the low energies of this experiment, theory continues to fail to reproduce the data, indicating that either something is missing in the calculations and/or there is a problem with the accuracy of the nucleon–nucleon potential being used.
