There exists a gap in our understanding of the age-dependent epidemiological dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 among school-age children in comparison to adults within the State of Qatar. Additionally, there ...has been limited assessment of the timely implementation of physical distancing interventions, notably national school closures, and their impact on infection trends.
We used the national database to capture all records of polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) testing, and rapid antigen tests (RAT) conducted at all health care venues in Qatar and administered between August 26, 2020, and August 21, 2022, across all age groups (≥ 5 years old). Study participants under 18 years old were categorized into two age brackets: (5-11) and (12-17), aligning with the Primary and Preparatory/Secondary grade levels in Qatar, respectively. We assessed age group testing rates, incidence rates, and positivity rates in relation to adults. These epidemiological metrics were compared with the CDC's thresholds for COVID-19 community transmission.
Throughout the school years of 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, a total of 5,063,405 and 6,130,531 tests were respectively conducted. In the 2020-2021 school year, 89.6% of the tests were administered to adults, while 13.7% were conducted on children in the following year. The overall test positivity rates for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years were 5.8% and 8.1%, respectively. Adolescents underwent the fewest tests during the full study period compared to both adults and young children. Using the CDC indicators, we found that children and adolescents can significantly contribute to elevated infection rates, potentially driving community transmission upon relaxation of social restrictions.
It is crucial to acknowledge the potential for higher transmission among youth and adolescents when formulating transmission control strategies and making decisions regarding school closures. Employing data-driven indicators and thresholds to monitor COVID-19 community levels is important for informing decision-making. These approaches also enable the prompt implementation of infection control transmission mitigation measures in future pandemics.
Background: In the public sector in Qatar, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) is the major provider of primary healthcare services to families. Therefore, the PHCC conducted the first ...epidemiological health assessment to understand the burden of diseases and their subsequent risk factors impacting its registered population, to design better services, implement it and allocate resources to respond to the population health needs.
Methods: A cross-sectional study design was adopted among all PHCC registered populations between September 1, 2018, and August 31, 2019. The study target population was all persons residing in Qatar aged 0+ years and registered at the 27 health centers affiliated with the PHCC; excluding patients with an expired residence permit on August 31, 2019, and craft male workers were provided their primary healthcare services at the Qatar Red Crescent health facilities. The data were extracted from patients’ electronic medical records (EMR).
Results: The burden of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were the highest among the population of the central region at 13.9%, 15.7%, and 11.1%, respectively. Tobacco consumption among males was higher than females and ranged from 25.4% to 27.8%, with the highest rate in the northern region. Obesity rates ranged between 34.7% and 37.0% among the total population registered with the lowest rate in the central region, while 39.9% of females in the northern region had a body mass index above 30 kg/m
2
. Exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months was significantly lower than that at 4 months across all regions. Children in the northern region had the highest rate of overweight/obesity based on Z-scores. The western region population had the highest number of communicable diseases notifications.
Conclusion: Understanding the patterns of disease in the local population will enable the PHCC to plan a clear set of services that meet the population's health needs, which include tailored health education and promotion components.
Background. Patient’s health care experiences and satisfaction are frequently used as a healthcare quality indicator. Aim. The study aims to evaluate the level of patient satisfaction with the ...pharmacy services provided at the Primary Health Care Corporation’s (PHCC) pharmacies in Qatar. Methods. This study is a cross-sectional survey conducted in December of 2019. The study’s setting is the Primary Health Care centers’ pharmacies. All adult patients (≥18 years old) with mobile phone numbers documented on file who had their prescription orders filled at the PHCC’s pharmacy units in 2019 were included in the study. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to present the findings. The significance level was set at the alpha level of 0.05. Results. The usable responses were 9,564 from the total participants. Around 55.2% (N = 5,283) were males, 56.5% (N = 5,405) were in the age group (25–40), 19.2% (N = 1,837) were Qatari nationals, 39.7% (N = 3,801) had their medication dispensed in the Central Region of the State of Qatar, and 72.8% (N = 6,964) had at least undergraduate or higher degrees. The overall mean (SD) satisfaction score was (3.24 ± 0.629). Participants were less satisfied with their pharmacist’s communication, especially offering information about medication’s side effects (2.61 ± 1.2) and general health counselling (2.39 ± 1.2). Respondents were also less satisfied with waiting time (3.02 ± 1.3). Waiting time, gender, age, nationality, geographical region of the pharmacy, educational level, and familiarity with the PHCC were significantly associated with satisfaction level. Conclusion. The patients were reasonably satisfied, and the satisfaction level differed among different sociodemographic groups. Based on the public’s needs and expectations, pharmacists need to continuously improve their effort to enhance the healthcare quality in the organization.

Background
There are gaps in understanding the prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among asymptomatic persons in the Middle East including Qatar. The aim of the ...study was to estimate the point prevalence of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), testing positivity rates and risk factors associated with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) positivity among asymptomatic people identified through active population surveillance.
Methods
This study was based on a retrospective identification of asymptomatic adults who have not been previously diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection. It includes subjects who were tested using RT-PCR between June 1st , 2020 and May 31st of 2021 at the Primary Health Care Corporation’s (PHCC) drive-through testing hubs. The testing data was extracted from the national SARS-CoV-2 PCR database. Sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidities were extracted from the medical records.
Results
A total of 148,735 subjects were tested; 5,848 positives, corresponding to a point prevalence of 3.93 (95% confidence interval, CI=3.83-4.03). RT-PCR positivity was higher among women and younger people (30-49 years old;
P
< 0.001). Logistic regression identified age, nationality, chronic comorbidity, and geographical location as significant predictors of asymptomatic infection. The adjusted odds of positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test were lower among older people, with the odds ratio 0.81 (95% CI=0.75-0.88), and those with multiple chronic conditions 0.87 (95% CI=0.81-0.94). The odds of a positive SARS-CoV-2 were higher among persons from South Asian nationalities . Residents of Central and Western regions had higher odds at 3.37 (95% CI=3.05-3.73) and 1.86 (95% CI=1.68-2.07), respectively. Hypertension (12.8%) and diabetes (12.1%) were the most common comorbidities detected among asymptomatic subjects.
Conclusions
Active community testing implemented through the PHCC’s drive-through swabbing hubs offers a valuable opportunity to identify asymptomatic COVID-19 cases and reduce the spread of the disease.
The COVID-19 pandemic has strained health care systems around the world. Pharmacists have made substantial contributions to the health care operations during the COVID-19 response. The Pharmacy ...Department at Qatar Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) acted proactively to ensure that all patients received their medications and their refilled prescriptions in time and without any disruption. The Medication Home Delivery Service was introduced and implemented for all Qatar residents to prevent unnecessary visits to health centers, minimize the spread of COVID-19 to vulnerable populations, especially those with multiple comorbidities, and protect health care workers from exposure to the virus. Moreover, several other precautionary measures were taken by the PHCC to ensure uninterrupted access to health care, including moving to a virtual health care delivery model. As of September 2020, the service had served around 64,213 patients since its launch in March 2020. In total, 70,357 medications were delivered and 69,092 (98.2%) medication packages were delivered successfully to patients, with an average of 450.8 medication packages delivered per month. Despite various challenges, the PHCC is considering continuing the Medication Home Delivery Service in the long term to continue with a more effective and efficient service for patients during the coming months and years.
This study is a part of the Primary Health Care Corporation's (PHCC) Health Needs Assessment (HNA) Initiative. It focuses on identifying perceptions of Arabic speaking primary care clients regarding ...community's major health issues, their experiences in utilizing health services, and the barriers that limit their access to health care in the State of Qatar.
A total of 10 focus groups sessions were conducted at different PHCC's health centers between October of 2019 and March of 2020. Sessions were distributed to cover all PHCC's three geographical regions. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
A total of 89 adult Arabic speaking individuals were recruited. Participants included were in the age groups (18-69), native Arabic speaker, and registered at one of the PHCC's health centers with a valid health card at time of recruitment.
Areas investigated included perceptions of the community's health issues, needed health services, and perceived barriers to health care. Priority health issues identified were chronic non-communicable diseases, mental health, timely access to care, cultural competency of delivered services, and integration and coordination across health care settings and sectors. Participants were able to identify socioeconomic and environmental factors such as the need for health and wellness interventions at schools that affects the health of the individual and the community. The importance of raising the community's awareness about health-related issues and availability of health services was highlighted by study participants.
Collecting qualitative data provides an opportunity to examine people's perceptions, and motivations and engage the whole community. This process is very important for strategic planning of health services. The study attempts to fill the knowledge gap and should be linked to health policy and the development of socially and culturally appropriate health programs.
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease of the colorectal area that demonstrates a dramatically increasing incidence worldwide. This study provides novel insights into the ...capacity of the exogenous β-hydroxybutyrate and ketogenic diet (KD) consumption to alleviate dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC in rats. Remarkably, both interventions attenuated disease activity and colon weight-to-length ratio, and improved macro and microstructures of the damaged colon. Importantly, both β-hydroxybutyrate and KD curbed the DSS-induced aberrant NLRP3 inflammasome activation as observed in mRNA and protein expression analysis. Additionally, inhibition of the NLRP3/NGSDMD-mediated pyroptosis was detected in response to both regimens. In parallel, these modalities attenuated caspase-1 and its associated consequences of IL-1β and IL-18 overproduction. They also mitigated apoptosis as indicated by the inactivation of caspase-3. The anti-inflammatory effects of BHB and KD were confirmed by the reported decline in the levels of inflammatory markers including MPO, NFκB, IL-6, and TNF-α. Moreover, these interventions exhibited antioxidative properties by reducing ROS production and improving antioxidative enzymes. Their effectiveness in mitigating UC was also evident in the renovation of normal intestinal epithelial barrier function, as shown by correcting the discrepancies in the levels of tight junction proteins ZO-1, OCLN, and CLDN5. Furthermore, their effects on the intestinal microbiota homeostasis were investigated. In terms of autophagy, exogenous β-hydroxybutyrate upregulated BECN-1 and downregulated p62, which may account for its superiority over KD in attenuating colonic damage. In conclusion, this study provides experimental evidence supporting the potential therapeutic use of β-hydroxybutyrate or β-hydroxybutyrate-boosting regimens in UC.
Mutations in MLC1 cause megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC), a rare form of leukodystrophy characterized by macrocephaly, epilepsy, spasticity, and slow mental ...deterioration. Genetic studies of MLC are lacking from many parts of the world, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Genomic DNA was extracted for 67 leukodystrophic patients from 43 Sudanese families. Mutations were screened using the NGS panel testing 139 leukodystrophies and leukoencephalopathies causing genes (NextSeq500 Illumina). Five homozygous MLC1 variants were discovered in seven patients from five distinct families, including three consanguineous families from the same region of Sudan. Three variants were missense (c.971 T > G, p.Ile324Ser; c.344 T > C, p.Phe115Ser; and c.881 C > T, p.Pro294Leu), one duplication (c.831_838dupATATCTGT, p.Ser280Tyrfs*8), and one synonymous/splicing-site mutation (c.762 C > T, p.Ser254). The segregation pattern was consistent with autosomal recessive inheritance. The clinical presentation and brain MRI of the seven affected patients were consistent with the diagnosis of MLC1. Due to the high frequency of distinct MLC1 mutations found in our leukodystrophic Sudanese families, we analyzed the coding sequence of MLC1 gene in 124 individuals from the Sudanese genome project in comparison with the 1000-genome project. We found that Sudan has the highest proportion of deleterious variants in MLC1 gene compared with other populations from the 1000-genome project.
