Herein, we demonstrate the successful construction of a novel flowerlike Ag/p-Ag2O/n-BiVO4 plasmonic photocatalyst for the photocatalytic oxidation of BPA and reduction of chromium(VI) simultaneously under visible light irradiation. Among these samples, 2mM-Ag/p-Ag2O/n-BiVO4 exhibits the highest photocatalytic performances. The photocatalytic reduction and oxidation efficiency can achieve 69.8 and 91.9%, respectively, after 100 min visible-light irradiation. The enhancement mechanism for the plasmonic photocatalyst is explored, which can be attributed to the enhanced absorbance in the visible light region, and the facilitated charge transfer and the suppressed recombination of electron-hole pairs in the Ag/p-Ag2O/n-BiVO4. The results of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the fluorescence emission spectra and the time-resolved fluorescence emission decay spectra indicate the enhanced charge separation in the Ag/p-Ag2O/n-BiVO4 plasmonic photocatalyst. In addition, the free radical scavenging test shows that h+ and OH radicals play crucial roles in the photocatalytic oxidation reaction. The photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic reduction process, are confirmed by the DMPO spin-trapping technology. Moreover, the band structures of various photocatalysts are revealed via the valence band XPS spectra and the Fermi level obtained by CASTEP code.

Constructing a heterojunction photocatalyst is a significant method to enhance photocatalytic activity because it can promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Herein, amorphous/crystalline contact Bi2S3/Bi4O7 heterostructure was successfully synthesized by in-situ sulfidation of Bi4O7. The amorphous Bi2S3 is diffused on the surface of Bi4O7 rod, enhancing the visible light response and improving the transport of photogenerated carriers. Various characterizations confirm that the rapid separation of photogenerated carriers leads to increased photocatalytic performance. The optimized Bi2S3/Bi4O7 heterostructure photocatalyst (BiS-0.15) exhibits the highest Cr(VI) reduction (0.01350 min−1) and RhB oxidation (0.08011 min−1) activity, which is much higher than that of pure Bi4O7 and Bi2S3/Bi4O7 mixture under visible light irradiation. This work provides new insights into the construction of efficient novel photocatalysts.

Semiconductor-based photoelectrocatalytic processes have attracted considerable research interest for solar energy collection and storage. Photoelectrocatalysis is a heterogeneous photocatalytic process in which a bias potential is applied to a photoelectrode, and thus the photoelectrocatalytic performance is closely related to the photoelectrode prepared by semiconductors. Among various semiconductors, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted more and more attention because of their unique properties such as optical properties and adjustable structure. Herein, a comprehensive review on different MOFs (Ti-based, Zn-based, Co-based, Fe-based, Cu-based, and mixed metal-based MOFs) for heterogeneous photoelectrocatalysis is carried out and, in particular, the application of this technique for CO2 conversion and water splitting is discussed. In addition, the challenges and development prospects of MOFs in photoelectrocatalysis are also presented.

To solve the problem of energy shortage and environmental pollution, the construction of properly designed photocatalysts is a promising method. Here, UiO-66-(COOH)2/ZnIn2S4 Z-scheme photocatalyst decorated with MoS2 nanosheets was designed and constructed as a novel 3D hierarchical structure via hydrothermal methods. In this particular 3D hierarchical structure, the UiO-66-(COOH)2 nanoparticles are decorated in the interweaving petal nanosheets of ZnIn2S4 microspheres, while the co-catalyst of MoS2 is folded at the edge of these interweaving petals. The excellent heterojunctions with highly exposed catalytic active sites are correspondingly built, and the close interfacial interaction between UiO-66-(COOH)2, MoS2 and ZnIn2S4 create a stage for fast transfer of photogenerated electrons, which are both effective for the photocatalytic reaction process. Also, the Z-scheme charge-transfer process improves the oxidizability and reducibility between UiO-66-(COOH)2 and ZnIn2S4. As a result, the optimized UiO-66-(COOH)2/MoS2/ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production (18.794 mmol h−1 g−1) and reduction of Cr(VI) (0.06850 min−1) under simulated solar light irradiation, which are 15.3 and 6.7 times higher than that of bare ZnIn2S4, respectively, and also the prominent stability and excellent recyclability are obtained. This study provides new insights into the research on the Z-scheme system containing MOF components for growing energy and environmental demands.

Histamine is one of the main triggers of aquatic allergies. In this work, a sensitive, selective and inexpensive electrochemical biosensor for the detection of histamine was developed. The DNA aptamer highly selective for histamine was covalently conjugated on gold nanoflower-modified ITO electrode as the working electrode (Apt/AuNFs/ITO), while Au@FeCo nanohybrids with peroxidase mimetic activity was used as electrochemical probe. The amount of probe linked to the electrode surface dependent on histamine concentration, and could be indicated by differential pulse voltammetry method in TMB-H2O2 system, thus paving a way for histamine sensing. This electrochemical biosensor exhibited a wide detection range from 1 to 5000 nmol L-1, and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.79 nmol L-1. Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied to detect histamine in real crab samples, indicating a good application prospect in actual sample determination.

A plasmonic Step-scheme heterojunction Au/g-C3N4/Cu2O photocatalyst was fabricated for the degradation of pollutants and energy generation. The removal of pollutants (oxytetracycline hydrochloride, ...OTH) and hydrogen evolution experiments showed that the catalyst had satisfactory stability and perfect photocatalytic performance. Among these catalysts, the 4-Au/g-C3N4/Cu2O displays the highest catalytic performance with the OTH removal efficiency as high as 94.8%. For the catalytic H2 evolution, the 4-Au/g-C3N4/Cu2O reveals the optimal H2 generation rate (552.6 μmol g−1. h−1), which is about 13.4 times higher than that of the bare Cu2O sample. The satisfactory photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the efficient interfacial charge separation, the high light absorption capacity induced by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au nanoparticles, and the formation of Step-scheme heterojunction retaining strong photocatalytic oxidation and reduction capability. The charge density difference was also calculated to verify the existence of the built-in electric field, which was the driving force for the formation of Step-scheme heterojunction structure.

A novel 2D/3D S-scheme carbon nitride/iodine-deficient bismuth oxyiodide (g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6) heterojunction was constructed for the first time by calcining a mixture of g-C3N4 nanosheets and flower-like BiOI. Irradiated by visible light, this g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6 heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production and BPA degradation activity with high cycle stability. In particular, the photocatalytic activity of 0.2-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6 could reach 1402.7 μmol g-1 h−1 (hydrogen production rate) and 0.01155 min−1 (apparent rate of bisphenol A degradation), which were 3.5 and 3.2 times that of g-C3N4 respectively. The remarkable photocatalytic performance was due to the efficient charge separation of g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6 and the formation of S-scheme heterojunction, which maintained strong photocatalytic reduction and oxidation potentials. Noticeably, the charge density difference and band offsets of the g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6 were calculated. The results revealed that a built-in electric field (IEF) was created. The values of the valence band offset (ΔEVBO) and the conduction band offset (ΔECBO) were −0.84 and −1.27 eV, respectively, which further demonstrated the formation of S-scheme photocatalytic charge transfer mechanism.

A bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-templated strategy was developed to fabricate mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons with improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, and the formation ...mechanism of these mesoporous polyhedrons was discussed in detail. Incorporating Cd atoms, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas of mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons were significantly increased (271 m2/g), providing more exposed active sites compared with ZnS. In addition, suitable conduction band potential (< −0.55 eV) of the mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons was also beneficial for the photocatalysis. Impressively, by the co-effects of mesoporous structure and modified conduction band, the mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons exhibited better photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution than most reported photocatalysts without noble metals. The maximum hydrogen evolution rate of the CSZ3 reached 4.10 mmol/(h g) under visible-light irradiation and without any cocatalyst condition. This facile strategy for the construction of mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons provided a deep insight to fabricate other metal sulfides for a variety of photochemical applications.

Excessive or deficient defects in graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets are detrimental to their photocatalytic activities. In this work, the approach of fluorine-containing solvothermal treatment has been applied to remodel the defects in g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNS). The fabrication process has been comprehensively investigated and the samples are characterized by various techniques. The results manifest that the solvothermal treatment declines the amount of defects, while the addition of fluorine stimulates the emergence of nitrogen vacancies for producing new active sites which makes the obtained fluorine modified CNS present excellent photocatalytic activities. The average rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation is 2607.4 μmol·h−1·g−1, which is almost 13 and 1.3 times of bulk g-C3N4 (BCN) and CNS, respectively, and the degradation rate of rhodamine B is about 3.4 and 1.9 times, respectively.

A novel S-scheme Au/g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6 plasmonic heterojunction was constructed by calcining a mixture of flower-like BiOI and Au/g-C3N4 nanosheets for the first time. This Au/g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6 heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity in bisphenol AF (BPAF) degradation and Cr(VI) reduction with high cycle stability under visible light irradiation. In particular, the photocatalytic performance of the optimum material developed (4-Au/g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6) can reach 0.0174 min−1 (apparent rate of BPAF degradation) and 0.0204 min−1 (apparent rate of Cr(VI) reduction), which were 6.5 and 3.7 times that of pristine g-C3N4, respectively. The high photocatalytic performance was due to the high efficiency of charge separation, the excellent light absorption of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) caused by the Au deposition, and the formation of S-scheme heterojunctions, which maintained strong photocatalytic reduction and oxidation activity. Noticeably, the charge density difference and band offsets of the g-C3N4/BiO1.2I0.6 were calculated. The results revealed that an internal electric field (IEF) was created, which further demonstrated the formation of an S-scheme photocatalytic mechanism.
