The transverse component of the spin angular momentum of evanescent waves gives rise to lateral optical forces on chiral particles, which have the unusual property of acting in a direction in which ...there is neither a field gradient nor wave propagation. Because their direction and strength depends on the chiral polarizability of the particle, they act as chirality-sorting and may offer a mechanism for passive chirality spectroscopy. The absolute strength of the forces also substantially exceeds that of other recently predicted sideways optical forces.

Optical elements that convert the spin angular momentum (SAM) of light into vortex beams have found applications in classical and quantum optics. These elements—SAM-to–orbital angular momentum (OAM) ...converters—are based on the geometric phase and only permit the conversion of left- and right-circular polarizations (spin states) into states with opposite OAM. We present a method for converting arbitrary SAM states into total angular momentum states characterized by a superposition of independent OAM. We designed a metasurface that converts left- and right-circular polarizations into states with independent values of OAM and designed another device that performs this operation for elliptically polarized states. These results illustrate a general material-mediated connection between SAM and OAM of light and may find applications in producing complex structured light and in optical communication.

We present a method allowing for the imposition of two independent and arbitrary phase profiles on any pair of orthogonal states of polarization-linear, circular, or elliptical-relying only on ...simple, linearly birefringent wave plate elements arranged into metasurfaces. This stands in contrast to previous designs which could only address orthogonal linear, and to a limited extent, circular polarizations. Using this approach, we demonstrate chiral holograms characterized by fully independent far fields for each circular polarization and elliptical polarization beam splitters, both in the visible. This approach significantly expands the scope of metasurface polarization optics.

Light can be coupled into propagating electromagnetic surface waves at a metal-dielectric interface known as surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). This process has traditionally faced challenges in the ...polarization sensitivity of the coupling efficiency and in controlling the directionality of the SPPs. We designed and demonstrated plasmonic couplers that overcome these limits using polarization-sensitive apertures in a gold film. Our devices enable polarization-controlled tunable directional coupling with polarization-invariant total conversion efficiency and preserve the incident polarization information. Both bidirectional and unidirectional launching of SPPs are demonstrated. The design is further applied to circular structures that create radially convergent and divergent SPPs, illustrating that this concept can be extended to a broad range of applications.

Many households in the United States face issues of incomplete plumbing and poor water quality. Prior scholarship on this issue has focused on one dimension of water hardship at a time, leaving the ...full picture incomplete. Here we complete this picture by documenting the full scope of water hardship in the United States and find evidence of a regionally-clustered, socially unequal nationwide household water crisis. Using data from the American Community Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency, we show there are 489,836 households lacking complete plumbing, 1,165 community water systems in Safe Drinking Water Act Serious Violation, and 21,035 Clean Water Act permittees in Significant Noncompliance. Further, we demonstrate this crisis is regionally clustered, with the specific spatial pattern varying by the specific form of water hardship. Elevated levels of water hardship are associated with the social dimensions of rurality, poverty, indigeneity, education, and age-representing a nationwide environmental injustice.

Despite considerable social scientific attention to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on urbanized areas, very little research has examined its impact on rural populations. Yet rural ...communities-which make up tens of millions of people from diverse backgrounds in the United States-are among the nation's most vulnerable populations and may be less resilient to the effects of such a large-scale exogenous shock. We address this critical knowledge gap with data from a new survey designed to assess the impacts of the pandemic on health-related and economic dimensions of rural well-being in the North American West. Notably, we find that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural populations have been severe, with significant negative impacts on unemployment, overall life satisfaction, mental health, and economic outlook. Further, we find that these impacts have been generally consistent across age, ethnicity, education, and sex. We discuss how these findings constitute the beginning of a much larger interdisciplinary COVID-19 research effort that integrates rural areas and pushes beyond the predominant focus on cities and nation-states.

Nonenzymatic lipid oxidation is usually viewed as deleterious. But if this is the case, then why does it occur so frequently in cells? Here we review the mechanisms of membrane peroxidation and ...examine the genesis of reactive electrophile species (RES). Recent evidence suggests that during stress, both lipid peroxidation and RES generation can benefit cells. New results from genetic approaches support a model in which entire membranes can act as supramolecular sinks for singlet oxygen, the predominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plastids. RES reprogram gene expression through a class II TGA transcription factor module as well as other, unknown signaling pathways. We propose a framework to explain how RES signaling promotes cell "REScue" by stimulating the expression of genes encoding detoxification functions, cell cycle regulators, and chaperones. The majority of the known biological activities of oxygenated lipids (oxylipins) in plants are mediated either by jasmonate perception or through RES signaling networks.
There has been much recent progress in the area of surrogate fuels for diesel. In the last few years, experiments and modeling have been performed on higher molecular weight components of relevance ...to diesel fuel such as n-hexadecane (n-cetane) and 2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane (iso-cetane). Chemical kinetic models have been developed for all the n-alkanes up to 16 carbon atoms. Also, there has been experimental and modeling work on lower molecular weight surrogate components such as n-decane and n-dodecane that are most relevant to jet fuel surrogates, but are also relevant to diesel surrogates where simulation of the full boiling point range is desired. For two-ring compounds, experimental work on decalin and tetralin recently has been published. For esters, kinetic mechanisms for compounds of lower molecular weights but similar to those found in typical biodiesel blendstocks also have been published. For multi-component surrogate fuel mixtures, recent work on modeling of these mixtures and comparisons to real diesel fuel is reviewed. Detailed chemical kinetic models for surrogate fuels are very large in size, so it is noteworthy that significant progress also has been made in improving the mechanism reduction tools that are needed to make these large models practicable in multi-dimensional reacting flow simulations of diesel combustion. Nevertheless, major research gaps remain. In the case of iso-alkanes, there are experiments and modeling work on only one of relevance to diesel: iso-cetane. Also, the iso-alkanes in diesel are lightly branched and no detailed chemical kinetic models or experimental investigations are available for such compounds. More components are needed to fill out the iso-alkane boiling point range. For the aromatic class of compounds, there has been little work for compounds in the boiling point range of diesel. Most of the new work has been on alkyl aromatics that are of the range C7–C9, below the C10–C20 range that is needed. For the chemical classes of cycloalkanes and esters, experiments and modeling on higher molecular weight components are warranted. Finally for multi-component surrogates needed to treat real diesel, the inclusion of higher molecular weight components is needed in models and experimental investigations.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an imaging modality where a patient or object is probed using harmless electric currents. The currents are fed through electrodes placed on the surface of the ...target, and the data consists of voltages measured at the electrodes resulting from a linearly independent set of current injection patterns. EIT aims to recover the internal distribution of electrical conductivity inside the target. The inverse problem underlying the EIT image formation task is nonlinear and severely ill-posed, and hence sensitive to modeling errors and measurement noise. Therefore, the inversion process needs to be regularized. However, traditional variational regularization methods, based on optimization, often suffer from local minima because of nonlinearity. This is what makes regularized direct (non-iterative) methods attractive for EIT. The most developed direct EIT algorithm is the D-bar method, based on complex geometric optics solutions and a nonlinear Fourier transform. Variants and recent developments of D-bar methods are reviewed, and their practical numerical implementation is explained.
Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been used in large quantities for a variety of applications in Australian industry and household products. Through the course of their everyday use, PFASs enter ...the wastewater stream however current treatment processes provide only partial removal of these chemicals from wastewater. The release of treated effluent and re-use of biosolids represents an important point source of PFASs into the Australian environment yet the scale of PFAS release from Australian WWTPs is unknown. For the first time, influent, effluent and biosolids samples from 14 WWTPs across Australia were assessed for 9 PFASs and the national loads of these PFASs released from WWTPs estimated. Ʃ9PFASs ranged from 0.98 to 440 ng/L (influent), 21–560 ng/L (effluent) and 5.2–150 ng/g (biosolids). National loads of PFOA and PFOS in effluent were estimated at 65 kg and 26 kg per annum respectively. In biosolids, annual loads were estimated at 2 kg and 8 kg respectively. The continued detection of PFOS over a decade after its phase out, the increasing use of PFOS alternatives together with their resistance to degradation processes suggests that PFASs will be a priority for regulators and waste management to prevent further contamination of Australia's water resources.
•PFASs were detected in the influent, effluent and biosolids of all 14 studied WWTPs.•Ʃ9PFASs were elevated by an average of 9.8 times in effluent compared to influent.•PFOA, PFOS detected in 93% and 86% of effluent samples (maximums 48 ng/L, 240 ng/L).•PFOS (mean 25 ng/g) and PFDA (mean 17 ng/g) were most abundant in biosolids.•National loads of PFOA and PFOS released by WWTPs were 67 kg and 33 kg annually.
