The local noise property of a 3D PET reconstructed image is investigated for a uniform-activity sphere distributed in a constantly attenuating spherical object. The positional dependence of the ...statistical noise is approximately derived and calculated for some special cases. It is suggested that a larger diameter of the activity sphere causes noise amplification, and the noise property for the large attenuating sphere is close to that for a non-attenuating object with the same total number of measuring counts. By considering noise propagation of two spherical activity distributions, we suggest that the signal-to-noise ratio of the image depends on a set of projection directions and the sizes and intensities of the activity distributions. In a simple case, we derive an optimal value of the maximum acceptance angle for the projection directions to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the image.
We propose a supersymmetric SO(10) model in which light Higgs doublets are obtained without fine-tuning of parameters, while giving grand-unification-scale masses to their colored partners. Unlike ...the previous attempts, the gauge coupling constant does not blow up below the Planck scale in the present model.

The monoclonal antibody CEA 102 against carcinoembryonic antigen was produced by immunization with purified CEA, and used as a radiotracer for the imaging of colorectal cancer. CEA102 was labeled ...with 131I by the chloramine-T or the Iodogen method, and administered i.v. to 20 patients with liver metastases, local recurrences, and/or primary tumors. Planar scintigraphy was performed during 5 or 6 postinfusion days. Hypersensitivity reactions such as fever and chill occurred in 4 patients, but no side effects were noted after endotoxin was excluded. Overall sensitivity was 71.4% (primary tumor 4/4, liver metastasis 5/6, lymph node metastasis 1/1, local recurrence 5/10), and no false positive was observed. In the cases of local recurrences, this method was useful to distinguish postoperative fibrosis from local recurrence. These results revealed that radiolabeled CEA102 has a great potential in qualitative diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Using integrated filter technology and an inter-IC bus system, the authors developed an NTSC video signal processing IC in a 48-pin dual-in-line package configuration. The processor provides ...automated alignment by integrating the digital-to-analog converters and bus control with analog processing circuitry on the same chip.< >
The sensitivity and the spatial resolution of ECAT EXACT HR super(+) (SIEMENS/CTI, Knoxville, TN, USA) were analyzed with reference to adjustable data-acquisition parameters. The standard protocol by ...the National Electrical Manufacturers Association was followed with minor modification. The performance was shown to depend on the parameters prominently in three-dimensional mode. The advantages and disadvantages of altering the parameters were discussed. It was concluded that the data-acquisition parameters should be carefully selected for a specific clinical situation in order to maximize the efficiency of PET measurement.
A rare case of carclnosarcoma (sarcomatoid carcinoma) with rhabdomyoblastic and osteoblastic differentlatlon occurrlng in the gastric remnant is reported. A 69‐year‐old Japanese man who had undergone ...a partial gastrectomy for a duodenal ulcer 30 years earlier, presented with anemla, eplgastralgia, and an abdominal mass. The diagnosls of gastric carcinosarcoma was made based on the findings of endoscoplc biopsies. The patient was thus scheduled to undergo a surgical operatlon, but he died of respiratory failure. At autopsy, a huge polypoid tumor measurlng 2Ox18times8 cm was located on the greater curvature of the gastric remnant. Microscopically, the tumor conslsted of Intimately mixed tubular adenocarcinoma and heterologous mesenchymal elements contalning rhabdomyosarcoma and osteosarcoma. Between these components, a morphological transition from the adenocarclnoma element to the sarcomatous element was observed. Ultrastructually, rhabdomyoblastlc dlfferentlation was conflrmed In the sarcomatous areas. lmmunocytochemlcal expresslons of epithelial markers includlng epithelial membrane antlgen and cytokeratlns (35bHll and 34bE12) were recognlzed not only in the carclnomatous cells but also In the sarcomatous cells. These findlngs suggest that carclnomatous cells appear to transform Into cells wlth sarcomatous features.

DNA polymerase preferentially incorporate dAMP opposite abasic sites (A-rule). The mechanism of the A-rule can be studied by analyzing three dissected stages of the reaction including (i) initial ...nucleotide insertion, (ii) proofreading excision of the inserted nucleotide and (iii) extension of the nascent primer terminus. To assess the role of the stage (ii) in the A-rule, kinetic parameters of the proofreading excision of primer terminus nucleotides opposite abasic sites were determined using E.coli DNA polymerase I Klenow fragment. The relative efficiency of the excision (Vmax/Km) revealed that removal of A was the least favored of the four nucleotides, but the differences in the efficiencies between excision of A and the other nucleotides was less than 2-fold. In addition, in an attempt to reconcile kinetic data associated with the stage (i) or (ii), the differences in free energy changes (delta delta G degrees) for the formation of model template-primer termini containing XN pairs (X = abasic site, N = A, G, C or T) were determined by temperature dependent UV-melting measurements. The order of delta delta G degrees was XG > XA = XC > or = XT, with delta delta G degrees being 0.5 kcal/mol for the most stable XG and the least stable XT. Based on these data, the role of the stage (ii) and energetic aspects of the A-rule are discussed.
A 57-year-old male presented with abrupt melena. Numerous polypoid lesions were found in the stomach and colon accompanied by characteristic ectodermal changes of the Cronkhite Canada syndrome. He ...had undergone a left side hemicolectomy for colon cancer 3 years previously. Two months after the operation, he had noticed hyperpigmentation of the skin, alopecia and chronic diarrhea. Subsequently, after 8 months, the presence of numerous polypoid lesions in the remnant colon and the rectum was established. This is the first reported case in which features of the Cronkhite-Canada syndrome have developed after resection for colon cancer.
To clarify the relationship between open heart surgery and gallstone formation.
Fifty-one patients without gallstones (Group A) underwent cardiac surgery using a heart-lung machine and were followed ...for 24 months by ultrasonography. Blood tests of hemolysis markers were examined before, immediately after, and 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. And 52 healthy candidates without gallstone (Group B) also were followed for 24 months.
The cumulative gallstone incidence in Group A was 15.7% at 3 months after surgery, 23.9% at 6 months, and 30.4% at and beyond 12 months and was significantly higher than that of Group B (p < 0.01). The stones showed a high dense pattern, indicative of pigment stones, in eight of the 10 patients assessed by CT. With respect to the type of surgery, latent hemolysis was seen only in patients who underwent mechanical valve replacement. However, there were no significant differences in the gallstone incidence between the patients who underwent mechanical valve replacement and those who underwent another cardiac surgery. The values of hemoglobin, haptoglobin, and lactate dehydrogenase showed abnormal values immediately after surgery, regardless of mechanical valve replacement or another cardiac surgery.
The use of a heart-lung machine, which produces hemolysis, appears to have a close relation to gallstone formation after open cardiac surgery.
