This article analyses the history of Brother Industry Ltd. (BIL) to propose a new take on the conventional wisdom surrounding the internationalisation of Japanese companies - a common understanding ...that the key factor behind Japanese firms' successes in establishing an international competitive edge was how the companies' headquarters in Japan implemented a powerful combination of control and integration over their international distributors and moved up from low-end markets to high-end markets through unyielding technological development. By exploring the case of BIL, we locate a different path to growth where highly autonomous local subsidiaries sought to remain in low-end markets and thereby assisted their companies to develop into innovative global companies.

We analyzed clinical cutoffs for defining computed tomography (CT) methods for sarcopenia and examined the prognostic value of CT for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCST) ...outcomes of patients with myeloid malignancy. We evaluated the impact of COVID-19 on bus ridership at the grid cell level using smart card data by categorizing ridership time-series in the following three steps; i) computation of dissimilarity ...indices between two grid cells based on dynamic time warping (DTW) and the difference in the daily average ridership, ii) grid cell mapping based on the dissimilarity indices using multidimensional scaling (MDS), and iii) grid cell classification using k-means clustering. One of the unique features of this study is the combined analysis of time-series trends in ridership, card type usage rates, and macro facility information by zone, which revealed that the decline in the ridership in the zones with visitor attraction facilities can be due to the not a large daily bus user, and that simultaneous school closures can lead to characteristic ridership patterns.
A germline chimera is a useful model for developing and differentiating germ cells in vivo. Gonadal germ cells (GGCs) collected from chicken embryonic gonads may be used to produce germline chimeras ...as donor cells. However, the migratory and proliferative abilities of GGCs after transfer into recipient embryos are unclear. Here, the migratory and proliferative abilities of GGCs collected from 7-day-old White Leghorn embryos and fluorescently labeled were analyzed following transfer into the dorsal aorta of 2.5-day-old Rhode Island Red (RIR) embryos. Five days after transfer, the numbers of male and female GGCs were significantly higher in the RIR gonads than those in non-gonadal RIR organs when 50 GGCs were transferred per embryo. To analyze the temporal migration of GGCs in intermediate mesoderm, 50 GGCs were again transferred. The numbers of male and female GGCs in RIR gonads increased significantly from days 3 to 6 after transfer. To analyze GGC migration and proliferation in the gonads, a single GGC was transferred into 100 male and 100 female embryos. Five days after transfer, the frequencies of settled and proliferated GGCs were 37% (37/100) and 24% (24/100) in males, and 23% (23/100) and 8% (8/100) in females, respectively. Thus, GGCs are a heterogeneous cell population that may or may not have migratory and proliferative abilities. The heterogeneity of GGCs may be greater in females than that in males. When 50 GGCs were transplanted, almost all those present in embryos had settled and proliferated in the gonads and mesonephros. The migratory and proliferative abilities of GGCs in recipient gonads were considerably diverse in individual GGCs or between donor sexes.
Inonotus obliquus (persoon) Pilat (Chaga, in Russia, kabanoanatake in Japan) is a fungus having been used as a folk medicine in Russia and said to have many health beneficial functions such as immune ...modulating and anti-cancer activities. In the present study, the antioxidant activity of hot water extract (decoction) of Chaga was precisely compared with those of other medicinal fungi (Agaricus blazei Mycelia, Ganoderma lucidum and Phellinus linteus) showing Chaga had the strongest antioxidant activity among fungi examined in terms of both superoxide and hydroxyl radicals scavenging activities. Further determination of the antioxidant potential of isolated fruiting body (brown part) and Sclerotium (black part) revealed the 80% MeOH extract of fruiting body had the highest potential as high as that of Chaga decoction. Finally, seven antioxidant components were isolated and purified from the 80% MeOH extract of Chaga fruiting body, and their chemical structures were determined as small phenolics as follows: 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy benzoic acid 2-hydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl ethyl ester (BAEE), protocatechic acid (PCA), caffeic acid (CA), 3,4-dihybenzaladehyde (DB), 2,5-dihydroxyterephtalic acid (DTA), syringic acid (SA) and 3,4-dihydroxybenzalacetone (DBL). Notably, BAEE was assigned as the new compound firstly identified from the natural source in the present study.
We aimed to clarify whether red dichromatic imaging (RDI), a new type of image-enhanced endoscopy, improves the visibility of bleeding points in acute GI bleeding (AGIB) compared with white-light ...imaging (WLI).
Images and videos of bleeding points acquired with WLI and RDI during endoscopic hemostasis for AGIB were retrospectively compared. In images, the color difference between bleeding points and surrounding blood was analyzed. In videos, 4 expert and 4 trainee endoscopists evaluated the visibility on a scale of 1 (undetectable) to 4 (easily detectable). Furthermore, the correlation between the color difference and visibility score was evaluated.
We analyzed 64 lesions. The color difference was significantly higher in RDI (13.11 ± 4.02) than in WLI (7.38 ± 3.68, P < .001). The mean visibility score for all endoscopists was significantly higher in RDI (3.12 ± .51) compared with WLI (2.72 ± .50, P < .001); this was also observed in experts (3.18 ± .51 vs 2.79 ± .54, P < .001) and trainees (3.05 ± .54 vs 2.64 ± .47, P < .001). The color difference and visibility score were moderately correlated for all endoscopists (γ = .56, P < .001) and for experts (γ = .53, P < .001) and trainees (γ = .57, P < .001).
RDI improves the visibility of bleeding points in AGIB compared with WLI. RDI can help endoscopists at all levels of experience to recognize bleeding points by enhancing the color contrast relative to surrounding blood.

Abstract
In multicellular organisms, oocytes and sperm undergo fusion during fertilization and the resulting zygote gives rise to a new individual. The ability of zygotes to produce a fully formed ...individual from a single cell when placed in a supportive environment is known as totipotency. Given that totipotent cells are the source of all multicellular organisms, a better understanding of totipotency may have a wide-ranging impact on biology. The precise delineation of totipotent cells in mammals has remained elusive, however, although zygotes and single blastomeres of embryos at the two-cell stage have been thought to be the only totipotent cells in mice. We now show that a single blastomere of two- or four-cell mouse embryos can give rise to a fertile adult when placed in a uterus, even though blastomere isolation disturbs the transcriptome of derived embryos. Single blastomeres isolated from embryos at the eight-cell or morula stages and cultured in vitro manifested pronounced defects in the formation of epiblast and primitive endoderm by the inner cell mass and in the development of blastocysts, respectively. Our results thus indicate that totipotency of mouse zygotes extends to single blastomeres of embryos at the four-cell stage.

Folate deficiency has been suggested as a risk factor for depression in preclinical and clinical studies. Several hypotheses of mechanisms underlying folate deficiency-induced depressive symptoms ...have been proposed, but the detailed mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we assessed whether post-weaning folate deficiency affect neurological and psychological function. The low folate diet-fed mice showed depression-like behavior in the forced swim test. In contrast, spontaneous locomotor activity, social behavior, coordinated motor skills, anxiety-like behavior and spatial memory did not differ between control and low folate diet-fed mice. In the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus, decreased number of newborn mature neurons and increased number of immature neurons were observed in low folate diet-fed mice. Staining with Golgi-Cox method revealed that dendritic complexity, spine density and the number of mature spines of neurons were markedly reduced in the DG of low folate diet-fed mice. Stress response of neurons indicated as c-Fos expression was also reduced in the DG of low folate diet-fed mice. These results suggest that reduction in the degree of maturation of newborn hippocampal neurons underlies folate deficiency-induced depressive symptoms.
