ABSTRACT When a river is dammed, impacts differ according to distance from the dam under consideration, and sites closer to the dam are more affected than distant ones. Damming a river changes the ...flow and landscape characteristics, which, in turn, change the hydrological, limnological and ecological dynamics, such as biological production, species distribution, and ecosystem structuring, functioning and services. This study evaluates the distribution pattern of the Siluriformes (catfish) fish species near a small hydroelectric power plant in the Jaguariaíva River, considering three distinct distances from the dam: upstream region, reservoir and downstream region. Samples were taken with gillnets between March 2013 and December 2014. The abundance and richness of the Siluriformes species were evaluated. A permutational multivariate analysis of variance was used to access possible differences in species composition among sites. Finally, a permutational analysis of multivariate dispersion was used to assess possible differences among sampling sites and to examine composition similarities among sites. A total of 840 Siluriformes individuals were captured, distributed among ten species and four families. The highest richness was observed in the downstream region, while the lowest richness was observed in the reservoir area. Differences in the abundance of species were observed between the three distinct regions; the downstream region presented the highest species abundance (CPUE), whereas the lowest abundance was observed in the dam region. Hypostomus paulinus and Hypostomus strigaticeps were abundant species, but exclusively sampled in the downstream region, while Corydoras ehrhardti and Cambeva diabola presented their highest abundance in the upstream region. The distinct longitudinal distribution of Siluriformes observed in this study can be interpreted as indicative of the negative effects of damming. Our study suggests that building small dams may result in negative impacts on the fish assemblage, impacts comparable to those of large reservoirs in terms of spatial changes. It is fundamentally necessary to better evaluate the environmental impacts of small dams in the Neotropical region, especially because few is known about them and how such impacts are comparable to impacts of larger reservoirs.
RESUMO Quando uma barragem é construída, seus impactos diferem de acordo com a distância relativa da barragem, sendo que os locais mais próximos da barragem são mais afetados que os mais distantes. O barramento de um rio resulta em modificações no fluxo do rio e características da paisagem, modificando sua dinâmica hidrológica, limnológica e ecológica, como produção biológica, distribuição de espécies e estruturação do ecossistema e suas funções. O padrão de distribuição de Siluriformes (bagres) no rio Jaguariaíva foi avaliado, considerando três distâncias da barragem: montante, reservatório e jusante. As amostragens foram realizadas em três regiões distintas do rio Jaguariaíva considerando a distância em relação à barragem, entre março de 2013 e dezembro de 2014, com redes de espera, e as distintas zonas originadas pelo represamento do rio. A abundância e riqueza de espécies foram avaliadas. Um total de 840 indivíduos de Siluriformes foi capturado, distribuídos em dez espécies e quatro famílias. A maior riqueza foi observada na região a jusante do reservatório, enquanto a menor foi verificada na região da barragem. Diferenças significativas na abundância das espécies entre as três regiões foram observadas; a região a jusante do reservatório apresentou a maior abundância (CPUE), enquanto a menor abundância foi observada na região do reservatório. Hypostomus paulinus e Hypostomus strigaticeps foram abundantes e exclusivamente amostrados na região a jusante do reservatório, enquanto Corydoras ehrhardti e Cambeva diabola apresentaram maiores abundâncias na região a montante do reservatório. A distribuição longitudinal de Siluriformes observada pode ser interpretada como um efeito negativo do represamento. Resultados obtidos indicam que os impactos negativos na ictiofauna, consequentes da construção de pequenas barragens podem ser comparáveis aos impactos originados pela construção de grandes barragens. É necessário avaliar os impactos da construção de pequenas barragens na região Neotropical, pois pouco se sabe acerca desses impactos e como estes são comparáveis a grandes reservatórios.
Birdshot retinochoroiditis (BRC) is a rare and chronic bilateral uveitis mostly found in Caucasians. As few data are available about the clinical course of BRC in Hispanic patients, we aimed to ...report the clinical findings and the evolution of BRC in Brazilian patients.
This retrospective cohort multicenter nationwide study was performed by analyzing the records of patients with BRC diagnoses from Brazilian ophthalmological centers from April 1995 to May 2020.
Forty patients (80 eyes) with a diagnosis of BRC were evaluated. The mean age was 53 years, and there was no sex predominance. All tested patients (34/40) were positive for HLA-A29. The diagnosis of BRC was made following the Levinson et al. criteria, and all ancillary tests were performed to exclude differential diagnoses. Clinical signs and symptoms, such as complications and treatment, were described.
BRC evolution in Brazilian patients seems to have some peculiarities that diverge from the published literature available about Caucasians, as AS inflammation is higher in this population.
In view of the growing global demand for electricity, many countries have been looking for ways to diversify production. However, in countries such as Brazil, hydroelectric power plants still ...constitute the predominant generating source, occupying important drainage systems, such as the Upper Paraná River. At the same time, hydroelectric dams are among the main sources of impacts on freshwater fish, interfering, for example, in the genetic distribution of populations. Although the same could be expected from Small Hydroelectric Plants, very little genetic information has been obtained along Neotropical drainages. Based on this, the present study analyzed the DNA (microsatellite loci) of non-migratory fish species (seven) upstream and downstream of three Small Hydroelectric Plants in the Upper Paraná River basin, obtaining information about the genetic distribution of fish populations in this scenario. In general, the data suggest that populations have been genetically subdivided by Small Hydroelectric Plants and that other factors, such as the number of Small Hydroelectric Plants along a drainage and connectivity with long free stretches, could also influence genetic differentiation levels, which provides information of great relevance to global discussions about the impacts of hydroelectric power plants, as well as for the implementation and management of projects.

This study comprises the first fish inventory of the Água das Araras stream, a small tributary of the Laranjinha River, in the upper Paraná River basin. Four samplings were carried out seasonally ...between June 2010 and July 2011, in 12 collecting sites distributed from the headwater to the mouth of Água das Araras stream and its tributaries, using seines and gill nets to capture specimens. A total of 5,328 specimens were collected, distributed in six orders, 15 families, 33 genera, and 41 species. The most representative orders, in terms of species richness, were Siluriformes and Characiformes. Among the families, Characidae (eight species) and Loricariidae (seven species) presented higher richness contributing together with approximately 36.6% of all collected species. The most frequent species captured in ≥75% of the sampled sites were Astyanax lacustris, Characidium aff. zebra, Corydoras aeneus, and Imparfinis schubarti. The classification of species with the Kendeigh Index highlighted the following ranking of the more abundant species: Phalloceros harpagos, C. aeneus, A. lacustris, and I. schubarti. Finally, our results emphasize the importance of sampling small aquatic bodies, revealing their potential for maintaining a significant portion of fish diversity in Neotropical freshwater environments.

This study investigated for the first time the synthesis of ferrierite zeolite through the vapor-phase transport method using the cationic polymer Luviquat as a mesopores-generating agent, followed ...by desilication treatment. The effect of ferrierite's textural and acid properties was then evaluated in the catalytic cracking of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The synthesized zeolites showed a crystallinity of 91%–100% and similar Si/Al ratios. After the desilication, there was a decrease in these values along with an increase in acidity, attributable to the extraction of structural silicon. The strong interaction between the polymer and the zeolite precursor during the self-assembly process led to the formation of intracrystalline mesoporosity. However, an internal diffusion limit and/or steric hindrance hinders the complete incorporation of the polymer into the ferrierite structure, especially at high polymer concentrations. Thus, the optimal composition was 40% Luviquat, which resulted in twice the volume of mesopores compared to the sample prepared without the polymer. The desilication of the samples synthesized with the Luviquat led to a substantial increase in mesoporosity, ranging from 67% to 183%, relative to microporous ferrierite. The introduction of mesoporosity and the modification of acid properties in ferrierite contributed to a reduction in the temperature for the cracking of UHMWPE, between 66 and 93 °C compared to the pure polymer. However, in all cases, there was an increase in the average apparent activation energy in relation to desilicated microporous ferrierite zeolite, possibly due to changes in product distribution.

Measures of traits are the basis of functional biological diversity. Numerous works consider mean species-level measures of traits while ignoring individual variance within species. However, there is ...a large amount of variation within species and it is increasingly apparent that it is important to consider trait variation not only between species, but also within species. Mammals are an interesting group for investigating trait-based approaches because they play diverse and important ecological functions (e.g., pollination, seed dispersal, predation, grazing) that are correlated with functional traits. Here we compile a data set comprising morphological and life history information of 279 mammal species from 39,850 individuals of 388 populations ranging from −5.83 to −29.75 decimal degrees of latitude and −34.82 to −56.73 decimal degrees of longitude in the Atlantic forest of South America. We present trait information from 16,840 individuals of 181 species of non-volant mammals (Rodentia, Didelphimorphia, Carnivora, Primates, Cingulata, Artiodactyla, Pilosa, Lagomorpha, Perissodactyla) and from 23,010 individuals of 98 species of volant mammals (Chiroptera). The traits reported include body mass, age, sex, reproductive stage, as well as the geographic coordinates of sampling for all taxa. Moreover, we gathered information on forearm length for bats and body length and tail length for rodents and marsupials. No copyright restrictions are associated with the use of this data set. Please cite this data paper when the data are used in publications. We also request that researchers and teachers inform us of how they are using the data.

Abstract The synthesis of SSZ-13 was studied by evaluating the influence of two types of crystallization seeds with CHA structure (S1 seeds prepared in fluoride medium and S2 seeds by the conversion ...of zeolite Y), SiO2/Al2O3 (28, 40, 60 and 100) and OH/SiO2 (0.6 and 0.8) ratios. Choline chloride was used as the structure-directing agent and the crystallizations occurred at 140 ºC from 24 to 96 h. S1 seeds led to the coexistence of zeolites SSZ-13 and P, while S2 seeds promoted in all SiO2/Al2O3 ratios and OH/SiO2 = 0.8, the formation of pure SSZ-13 after 24 h. The SSZ-13 samples are formed by clusters of crystals with cuboid-like morphology and exhibited textural properties typical of CHA framework. SSZ-13 zeolite led to a decrease in the temperature and the activation energy required for the degradation of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene polymer, demonstrating its efficiency as catalyst in this process.

Introduction: ACT DMD was a 48‐week trial of ataluren for nonsense mutation Duchenne muscular dystrophy (nmDMD). Patients received corticosteroids for ≥6 months at entry and stable regimens ...throughout study. This post hoc analysis compares efficacy and safety for deflazacort and prednisone/prednisolone in the placebo arm. Methods: Patients received deflazacort (n = 53) or prednisone/prednisolone (n = 61). Endpoints included change from baseline in 6‐minute walk distance (6MWD), timed function tests, estimated age at loss of ambulation (extrapolated from 6MWD). Results: Mean changes in 6MWD were ‐39.0 m (deflazacort; 95% confidence limit CL, ‐68.85, ‐9.17) and ‐70.6 m (prednisone/prednisolone; 95% CL, ‐97.16, ‐44.02). Mean changes in 4‐stair climb were 3.79 s (deflazacort; 95% CL, 1.54, 6.03) and 6.67 s (prednisone/prednisolone; 95% CL, 4.69, 8.64). Conclusions: This analysis, limited by its post hoc nature, suggests greater preservation of 6MWD and 4‐stair climb with deflazacort vs. prednisone/prednisolone.
