Abstract Background Obesity is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases and is a serious public health problem. In animal models, high-fat diet (HFD) feeding impairs cardiac structure and function and promotes oxidative stress and apoptosis. Resistance exercise training (RT), however, has been recommended as coadjutant in the treatment of cardiometabolic diseases, including obesity, because it increases energy expenditure and stimulates lipolysis. Objective In this systematic review, we aimed to assess the benefits of RT on the heart of rats and mice fed HFD. Methods Original studies were identified by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases from December 2007 to December 2022. This study was conducted in accordance with the criteria established by PRISMA and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022369217). The risk of bias and methodological quality was evaluated by SYRCLE and CAMARADES, respectively. Eligible studies included original articles published in English that evaluated cardiac outcomes in rodents submitted to over 4 weeks of RT and controlled by a sedentary, HFD-fed control group (n = 5). Results The results showed that RT mitigates cardiac oxidative stress, inflammation, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. It also modifies the activity of structural remodeling markers, although it does not alter biometric parameters, histomorphometric parameters, or the contractile function of cardiomyocytes. Conclusion Our results indicate that RT partially counteracts the HFD-induced adverse cardiac remodeling by increasing the activity of structural remodeling markers; elevating mitochondrial biogenesis; reducing oxidative stress, inflammatory markers, and endoplasmic reticulum stress; and improving hemodynamic, anthropometric, and metabolic parameters.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the association of treatments with aerobic exercise training (AET) and açai supplementation on calcium homeostasis (Ca2+) and inflammatory markers of the heart of rats submitted to a high-fat diet. Fisher rats were used, divided into five experimental groups: Control (C), High-fat Diet (H); High-fat Diet + Açai (HA); High-fat Diet + AET (HT); High-fat Diet + Açai + AET (HAT). The groups fed a high-fat diet received 21.8% lard and 1% cholesterol. The groups supplemented with lyophilized açai received 1% of açai in the diet. The animals in the trained groups were submitted to a progressive treadmill running program for 8 weeks. At the end, the hearts were dissected, and the left ventricles separated for real-time PCR analysis. The HT group had higher gene expression of ryanodine receptor type 2 (RyR2) compared to group H. Regarding the sodium/calcium exchanger (NCX), group H had lower gene expression compared to the other groups. Interleukin 10 (IL-10) was high in group HT when compared to group H. The treatments changed parameters of Ca2+ homeostasis and inflammation, but the association of interventions did not provide additional effects.
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the impact of low to moderate aerobic exercise and ovariectomy on body composition and food consumption in female rats. Methods Forty adult Wistar female rats (age: 23 ...weeks; body weight: 275.2±3.6g; mean±SEM) were divided into 4 groups (n=10): laparotomy-sedentary; laparotomy-exercised; ovariectomy-sedentary; and ovariectomy-exercised. The exercised groups were submitted to a treadmill running program (16m/min; 30min/day, 5 days/week), for 8 weeks. Body weight and food consumption were monitored during the experiment. Visceral fat and carcass water, protein, ash, fat and carbohydrate fractions were analyzed. Two-way ANOVA plus the Tukey’s post hoc test was used for comparisons and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results The ovariectomized (ovariectomy-sedentary+ovariectomy-exercised) and sedentary (laparotomy-sedentary+ovariectomy-sedentary) animals showed higher (p<0.05) weight gain, food consumption, food efficiency ratio and weight gain/body weight ratio than laparotomy animals (laparotomy-sedentary+laparotomy-exercised) and exercised (exercised laparotomy+exercised ovariectomy), respectively. The ovariectomized and sedentary animals showed higher (p<0.05) carcass weight, fat percentage and visceral fat than laparotomy and exercised rats, respectively. Conclusion Ovariectomy and physical inactivity increase obesogenic indicators, whereas regular aerobic exercise of low to moderate intensity attenuates these unfavorable effects in female rats.
Resumo Fundamento A hipertrofia e a dilatação do ventrículo direito observadas na hipertensão arterial pulmonar (HAP) prejudicam a dinâmica do ventrículo esquerdo (VE) achatando o septo ...interventricular.
Introduction: sedentary behavior (SB) has been independently associated with detrimental health outcomes in different regions worldwide. The aim of this systematic review was to examine whether ...domain-specific SB is associated with cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) and related biomarkers in South American adults. Methods: nine electronic databases were searched to identify all studies that analyzed the association between SB and CMD-e.g. obesity, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and clustering of chronic diseases (CCD)-and related biomarkers in South American adults. Two independent reviewers performed the necessary abstract/full-text screening, data abstraction, and quality assessments. The review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42018099319). Results: from the 1,262 articles identified in the search 262 were reviewed in full and 20 were used in the analysis in accordance to the inclusion criteria. High SB (mainly sitting and TV time) was associated with an increased likelihood of obesity (n = 8), diabetes (n = 6), and CCD (n = 3), as well as high values of BMI (n = 8), WC (n = 7), % BF (n = 4), plasma lipids (n = 4), and glycemia (n = 5). Eleven out of 20 studies were of higher quality. Conclusion: long time spent in SB, mainly sitting and TV time, was positively associated with the occurrence of CMD and related biomarkers in South American adults.

Introduction
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a metabolic condition that comprises a spectrum of liver diseases. Non-pharmacological treatments such as functional food consumption and ...aerobic exercise training (AET) have been recommended.
Objective
To evaluate the combined effects of açai pulp consumption and AET on the development of NAFLD induced by a high-fat diet.
Methods
Male Fischer rats received either standard or high-fat diet. Animals (21.8% lard and 1% cholesterol) were treated with lyophilized açai pulp (1%), AET or açai plus AET for 8 weeks. Exercise capacity, body fat, serum metabolites (triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein) and enzymes (lipase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase), liver macrovesicular steatosis and liver lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances—TBARS) were evaluated.
Results
Açai consumption reduced the levels of serum total cholesterol (
p
= 0.0185). AET with or without açai consumption increased the exercise capacity (
p
= 0.0097) and reduced body fat (
p
= 0.0001) similarly. Both AET and açai consumption individually reduced the concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (
p
= 0.0103) and TBARS (
p
= 0.0014). AET with or without açai consumption reduced the degree of macrovesicular steatosis (
p
< 0.0001) likewise.
Conclusions
Açai consumption or AET protect against increases in serum metabolite (total cholesterol) and enzyme (aspartate aminotransferase) and liver lipid peroxidation (TBARS), whereas AET prevents increases in the degree of macrovesicular steatosis in this model of NAFLD induced by high-fat diet in rats. The combination of treatments, nevertheless, does not provide additional effects.

The aims of this cross-sectional study were to explore the ability of serum interleukin 18 (IL-18) and adiponectin to identify metabolic syndrome (MetS), and to verify their association with an index ...of central lipid overaccumulation (lipid accumulation product (LAP)) and cardiometabolic risk factors in a population of middle-aged Brazilian men. A group of 218 apparently healthy middle-aged Brazilian men (age, 50.3 ± 4.97 years) underwent anthropometric, clinical, sociodemographic, and standard serum biochemical assessments. LAP was calculated and the study participants were categorized into 3 groups according to serum IL-18 and adiponectin cut-points tertiles to verify the association of these biomarkers with cardiometabolic risk factors. The MetS group had more less active (p = 0.03) and obese (p < 0.01) individuals who exhibited higher IL-18 (p < 0.01) and lower adiponectin (p < 0.01) than did those in the group with no MetS. After adjustments (age, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity level, and total body fat), serum IL-18 ≥ 336.4 pg/mL was an independent factor for MetS occurrence and it was directly associated with LAP (≥51.28), central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypertension (p < 0.05), but not with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Serum adiponectin ≥ 7.02 μg/mL was negatively associated with MetS occurrence, LAP, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL-C (p < 0.05), but not with central obesity and hypertension. In conclusion, both IL-18 and adiponectin demonstrated the ability to identify MetS in this population, with IL-18 being more accurate. The association of these biomamarkers with LAP and cardiometabolic risk factors highlights its relevance as a diagnostic tool.

To determine the effects of resistance training (RT) on the expression of microRNA (miRNA)-214 and its target in sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA2a), and on the morphological and mechanical ...properties of isolated left ventricular myocytes.
Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups (n = 7/group): Control (CO) or trained (TR). The exercise-training protocol consisted of: 4 × 12 bouts, 5×/week during 8 weeks, with 80% of one repetition maximum.
RT increased the left ventricular myocyte width by 15% and volume by 12%, compared with control animals (p < 0.05). The time to half relaxation and time to peak were 8.4% and 4.4% lower, respectively, in cells from TR group as compared to CO group (p < 0.05). RT decreased miRNA-214 level by 18.5% while its target SERCA2a expression were 18.5% higher (p < 0.05).
Our findings showed that RT increases single left ventricular myocyte dimensions and also leads to faster cell contraction and relaxation. These mechanical adaptations may be related to the augmented expression of SERCA2a which, in turn, may be associated with the epigenetic modification of decreased miRNA-214 expression.

Climate change has amplified the importance of continuous and precise body core temperature (T
) monitoring in the everyday life. In this context, assessing T
through ingestible capsules technology, ...i.e., gastrointestinal temperature (T
), emerges as a good alternative to prevent heat-related illness. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review to point out values of normal T
measured through ingestible capsules in healthy humans. The study followed PRISMA guidelines and searched the PubMed and Scielo databases from 1971 to 2023. Our search strategy included the descriptors ("gastrointestinal temperature") AND ("measurement"), and eligible studies had to be written in English and measured T
using ingestible capsules or sensors in healthy adults aged 18-59 at rest. Two pairs of researchers independently reviewed titles and abstracts and identified 35 relevant articles out of 1,088 in the initial search. An average value of 37.13 °C with a standard deviation of 0.24 °C was observed, independently of the gender. The values measured ranged from 36.70 °C to 37.69 °C. In conclusion, this systematic review pointed out the mean value of 37.13 ± 0.24 °C measured by ingestible capsules as reference for resting T
in healthy adult individuals.
