In larger parts of the Middle East palliative care is still misunderstood among health professionals, cancer patients and the public at large. One reason to that is because the term does not ...obviously communicate the intent of this clinical discipline, which is lending better quality of life while combating cancer. Further, culture, tradition and religion have contributed to this misgiving and confusion especially at the terminal stage of the disease.
The Middle East Cancer Consortium jointly with the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Oncology Nursing Society, the San Diego Hospice Center for Palliative Medicine and the Children's Hospital & Clinics of Minnesota initiated a series of training courses and workshops in the Middle East to provide updated training to physicians, nurses, social workers and psychologists from throughout the region with basic concepts of palliative care and pain managements in adults and children cancers.
During the past 6 years hundreds of professionals took part in these educational and training activities, thereby creating the core of trained caregivers who start to make the change in their individual countries.
The outcome of consecutive training activities can overcome geopolitical instabilities, and yield a genuine change in approach of both regulators, medical administrators, medical staff and the public; as to the important contribution of palliative care services to the welfare of the patient and his/her family.

. These varied properties allow for application of corannulene in a myriad of disciplines ranging from organic electronics and sensing to energy storage and self-assembly. In this feature article, our goal is to discuss the major synthetic developments in corannulene chemistry which allow the scientific community access to this beautiful molecule in a practical fashion, the unique properties of the corannulene nucleus that sets it apart from the planar polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and lastly its applications in the arena of materials chemistry.

A 38-year-old army officer started therapy in 2020 with a four-year history of auditory hallucinations and delusions of reference, persecution and grandeur, symptoms that were resistant to ...traditional antipsychotic medications. He follows an integrative psychotherapy program that aims to reduce his anxiety, continues his antipsychotic medications, and has Infra-Low Frequency Neurofeedback. After his initial assessment he had a 40 min session of Infra-Low Frequency Neurofeedback before any other kind of intervention. Before and immediately after the session he completed the SCL-90 scale and the Visual Analog Scale covering 20 aspects of his psychological and physical state as well as his schizophrenic symptoms. This first Neurofeedback session had dramatic effects on his psychotic symptoms, levels of anxiety and psychosomatic condition, before his first psychotherapy session and/or any changes in his antipsychotic medication. The above results have great importance due to the severity and chronicity of schizophrenia. Informed consent was obtained from the participant for the publication of this case report (including all data and images).
Mathematical and signal-processing methods were used to obtain reliable measurements of the heartbeat pulse rate and information on oxygen concentration in the blood using short video recordings of ...the index finger attached to a smartphone built-in camera. Various types of smartphones were used with different operating systems (e.g., iOS, Android) and capabilities. A range of processing algorithms were applied to the red-green-blue (RGB) component signals, including mean intensity calculation, moving average smoothing, and quadratic filtering based on the Savitzky–Golay filter. Two approaches—gradient and local maximum methods—were used to determine the pulse rate, which provided similar results. A fast Fourier transform was applied to the signal to correlate the signal’s frequency components with the pulse rate. We resolved the signal into its DC and AC components to calculate the ratio-of-ratios of the AC and DC components of the red and green signals, a method which is often used to estimate the oxygen concentration in blood. A series of measurements were performed on healthy human subjects, producing reliable data that compared favorably to benchmark data obtained by commercial and medically approved oximeters. Furthermore, the effect of the video recording duration on the accuracy of the results was investigated.

Maternal effects are widely observed, but their adaptive nature remains difficult to describe and interpret. We investigated adaptive maternal effects in a clone of the crustacean Daphnia magna, ...experimentally varying both maternal age and maternal food and subsequently varying food available to offspring. We had two main predictions: that offspring in a food environment matched to their mothers should fare better than offspring in unmatched environments, and that offspring of older mothers would fare better in low food environments. We detected numerous maternal effects, for example offspring of poorly fed mothers were large, whereas offspring of older mothers were both large and showed an earlier age at first reproduction. However, these maternal effects did not clearly translate into the predicted differences in reproduction. Thus, our predictions about adaptive maternal effects in response to food variation were not met in this genotype of Daphnia magna.

Photodynamic therapy is an anti‐cancer treatment that requires illumination of photosensitizers to induce local cell death. Current near‐infrared organic photosensitizers are built from large and ...non‐modular structures that cannot be tuned to improve safety and minimize off‐target toxicity. This work describes a novel chemical platform to generate enzyme‐activatable near‐infrared photosensitizers. We optimized the Se‐bridged hemicyanine scaffold to include caging groups and biocompatible moieties, and generated cathepsin‐triggered photosensitizers for effective ablation of human glioblastoma cells. Furthermore, we demonstrated that enzyme‐activatable Se‐bridged hemicyanines are effective photosensitizers for the safe ablation of microtumors in vivo, creating new avenues in the chemical design of targeted anti‐cancer photodynamic therapy agents.
We describe a modular chemical platform for the synthesis of targeted near‐infrared photosensitizers including enzymatic cages and biocompatible units. We demonstrated its utility with the design of a cathepsin B‐activatable agent for safe ablation of microtumors in vivo in a zebrafish preclinical model.
