In the ...purpose of expanding applications for the field of bionanotechnology, we report biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by using aqueous extract from C. latifolium leaf and explore antibacterial activity and catalytic performance for degradation of pollutants. The formation of CL-AgNPs and CL-AuNPs is confirmed and optimized by UV-visible spectroscopy with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks at around 402 and 539 nm, respectively. The spherical CL-AgNPs have an average diameter of 20.5 nm and the multishaped CL-AuNPs possess an average size of 17.6 nm. The actions of four bacterial strains were strongly inhibited by using the CL-AgNPs. Furthermore, the biosynthesized metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) exhibited the excellent catalytic degradation performance of pollutants.

Nine cembranoid diterpenes 1–9, including four new compounds, crassumols D–G (1–4), were isolated from the methanol extract of the Vietnamese soft coral Lobophytum crassum. Spectroscopic methods were ...used to elucidate the structures of these compounds. Compound 5 exhibited a potent inhibitory effect on tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα)-induced nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) transcriptional activation in HepG2 cells and significantly inhibited the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in a dose-dependent manner.
For the first time, a versatile, novel and environmentally-friendly aerogel was successfully fabricated from rice straw – one of the most abundant agricultural waste in South-east Asia. The final ...product is able to be applied in a wide range of applications including oil-spill cleaning, thermal insulation and acoustic absorption. The fabrication process is simple, cost-efficient and totally green without disposal of harmful by-products into the environment. Specifically, rice straw fibers were dispersed along with reinforcers (PVA or cationic starch) followed by freeze-drying to form shaped aerogels. Those samples were then turned into hydrophobic by coating with MTMS using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to produce aerogels with exceptional water repellency (WCA exceeding 1500). The morphology, pore structure and physical properties of the aerogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermal conductivity, water contact angle (WCA) measurements, oil adsorption and sound absorption measurements. The aerogel samples exhibit extremely low densities (0.05–0.06 g/cm3), high porosities (~97%), excellent heat reduction properties with low thermal conductivities (0.034–0.036 W/m.K), good mechanical properties (Young modulus up to 47 kPa) and oil adsorption efficiency proven with the capacity up to 13 g/g. In addition, huge potential of rice straw aerogels in sound absorption applications is also demonstrated with high noise reduction coefficient (up to 0.6). The samples still retain their thermal insulation, sound insulation capability and hydrophobicity after 2-month exposure in ambient environment.

Therapy in Practice
review is an update of a talk first given by JND at the European Congress on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in 2019 in the Netherlands. The review contextualizes the most recently published World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the treatment of HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis in terms of the data from large, randomized, controlled trials published between 1997 and 2022. We discuss the rationale for induction and maintenance therapy and the efficacy and undesirable effects of the current therapeutic armamentarium of amphotericin, flucytosine and fluconazole. We address recent research into repurposed drugs such as sertraline and tamoxifen, and potential future treatment options, including the novel antifungals fosmanogepix, efungumab and oteseconazole, and non-pharmaceutical solutions such as neurapheresis cerebrospinal fluid filtration.

Background
Natural products are often friendly and can be used on children's skin after systematic and careful research. Therefore, in this study, the Royal Oji Complex (ROC), a product with natural ...ingredients, was used to study their effectiveness on keratinocytes taken from the skin of children from 0 to 3 years old.
Method
Normal human epidermal keratinocytes and tissue‐isolated keratinocytes (TIKC) from young donors were treated with three different concentrations of ROC: 0.1, 1, and 10 ppm. The mRNA expression of the epidermal barrier's essential genes, such as hyaluronic acid synthase 3 (Has3), involucrin (IVL), loricrin (LOR), and claudin‐1 (CLD1) was investigated using qRT‐PCR. Ceramide content was measured by ELISA, with retinoic acid (R.A.) and amarogentin (AMA) serving as positive controls.
Results
ROC significantly elevated HAS3 gene expression in HEKn cells, especially at 10 ppm, indicating potential advantages for skin hydration in young infants. IVL increased at first but decreased as ROC concentrations increased. LOR was upregulated at lower ROC concentrations but reduced at higher doses. CLD1 gene expression increased considerably in HEKn but reduced with increasing ROC doses. Ceramide concentration increased somewhat but not significantly at 10 ppm.
Conclusion
ROC shows potential in altering keratinocyte gene expression, with unique responses in HEKn and TIKC from young donors. While changes in ceramide content were insignificant, these results help to comprehend ROC's multiple effects on young children's skin.

Objective To investigate the validity of recommendations in treatment guidelines to use higher than approved doses of oseltamivir in patients with severe influenza.Design Double blind randomised ...trial.Setting Thirteen hospitals in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.Participants Patients aged ≥1 year admitted to hospital with confirmed severe influenza.Interventions Oral oseltamivir at double dose (150 mg twice a day/paediatric equivalent) versus standard dose (75 mg twice a day/paediatric equivalent).Main outcome measure Viral status according to reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for influenza RNA in nasal and throat swabs on day five.Results Of 326 patients (including 246 (75.5%) children aged <15), 165 and 161 were randomised to double or standard dose oseltamivir, respectively. Of these, 260 (79.8%) were infected with influenza virus A (133 (40.8%) with A/H3N2, 72 (22.1%) with A/H1N1-pdm09, 38 (11.7%) with seasonal A/H1N1, 17 (5.2%) with A/H5N1) and 53 (16.2%) with influenza virus B. A further 3.9% (13) were false positive by rapid antigen test (negative by RT-PCR and no rise in convalescent haemagglutination inhibition titers). Similar proportions of patients were negative for RT-PCR on day five of treatment: 115/159 (72.3%, 95% confidence interval 64.9% to 78.7%) double dose recipients versus 105/154 (68.2%, 60.5% to 75.0%) standard dose recipients; difference 4.2% (−5.9 to 14.2); P=0.42. No differences were found in clearance of virus in subgroup analyses by virus type/subtype, age, and duration of illness before randomisation. Mortality was similar: 12/165 (7.3%, 4.2% to 12.3%) in double dose recipients versus 9/161 (5.6%, 3.0% to 10.3%) in standard dose recipients. No differences were found between double and standard dose arms in median days on supplemental oxygen (3 (interquartile range 2-5) v 3.5 (2-7)), in intensive care (4.5 (3-6) v 5 (2-11), and on mechanical ventilation (2.5 (1-16) v 8 (1-16)), respectively. No important differences in tolerability were found.Conclusions There were no virological or clinical advantages with double dose oseltamivir compared with standard dose in patients with severe influenza admitted to hospital.Registration Clinical Trials NCT00298233

In this work, Pt-SiO2/graphene nanocomposites have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and investigated as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation. Structure and morphology of these ...catalysts are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption/desorption studies. The Pt and SiO2 contents of these nanocomposites are determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Their electrocatalytic properties are investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry and electrochemical impendence spectroscopy. The as-prepared nanocomposites show the improved catalytic performance, better stability and good antiposoining ability compared with Pt supported on graphene catalyst. Particularly, the catalyst containing 9.24% of SiO2 exhibits the best electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation with mass activity of 1047mAmg−1.

Cryptococcal meningitis has high mortality. Flucytosine is a key treatment but is expensive and rarely available. The anticancer agent tamoxifen has synergistic anti-cryptococcal activity with ...amphotericin in vitro. It is off-patent, cheap, and widely available. We performed a trial to determine its therapeutic potential.
Open label randomized controlled trial. Participants received standard care - amphotericin combined with fluconazole for the first 2 weeks - or standard care plus tamoxifen 300 mg/day. The primary end point was Early Fungicidal Activity (EFA) - the rate of yeast clearance from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Trial registration https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03112031.
Fifty patients were enrolled (median age 34 years, 35 male). Tamoxifen had no effect on EFA (-0.48log10 colony-forming units/mL/CSF control arm versus -0.49 tamoxifen arm, difference -0.005log10CFU/ml/day, 95% CI: -0.16, 0.15, p=0.95). Tamoxifen caused QTc prolongation.
High-dose tamoxifen does not increase the clearance rate of
from CSF. Novel, affordable therapies are needed.

High-performance bulk magnets based on MnBi alloys have been attractive to researchers globally since the early 1950s. Recently, there has been renewed interest into these types of magnets because of ...their high performance at high working temperatures and the absence of rare earth elements. In comparison with rare-earth-containing magnets, the disadvantage of this material is the low intrinsic spontaneous magnetization (~ 8.2 kG) and the lower value of saturation magnetization of green powders used for making bulk magnets. So, both magnetization and coercivity become extrinsic and their values depend on the techniques used in their preparation. The paper analyses the technological steps of making high-performance magnets and emphasizes the challenges in developing single-phase MnBi and nanocomposite MnBi/Co-nanowire magnets.
