Objectives: To evaluate the effect of maximum bite force (mBF) on marginal bone loss (MBL) around mini‐implants in edentulous patients wearing mandibular overdentures with two retention systems: ball ...and bar.
Material and methods: Forty‐five totally edentulous patients were selected from a public health center. All of them received two mini‐implants (1.8 × 15 mm; Sendax®) in the anterior mandible using a minimally invasive technique. A single randomization was performed to allocate the patients in two groups. Group I (n=22) received two single ball‐type mini‐implants and Group II (n=23) received two mini‐implants splinted with a prefabricated bar. The mBF was recorded using a press‐sensitive sheet Dental Prescale® (Fuji) and MBL using standardized radiographs of each mini‐implant at the baseline and 5, 7, 10, and 15 months after surgery; the values were compared between groups.
Results: Two members of Group I failed to complete the study, decreasing the number of participants to 20. There was no relationship between the mBF and the MBL of the mini‐implants (Spearman's ρrs=0.147; P=0.378). At the 15‐month follow‐up, the average mBF for Group I (ball) was 247.53 ± 132.91 N and that of Group II (bar) only 203.23 ± 76.85 N (Mann–Whitney test; P=0.586). The MBL values were also higher for Group I (1.40 ± 1.02 mm) than Group II (0.84 ± 0.66 mm) during the entire 15‐month follow‐up period (Mann–Whitney test; P=0.077).
Conclusions: No relationship was found between mBF and MBL for patients wearing overdentures retained on mini‐implants using bar or ball attachment systems.

Programmed cell death (PCD) occurs in animals and plants under various stresses and during development. Recently, vacuolar processing enzyme (VPE) was identified as an executioner of plant PCD. VPE ...is a cysteine protease that cleaves a peptide bond at the C-terminal side of asparagine and aspartic acid. VPE exhibited enzymatic properties similar to that of a caspase, which is a cysteine protease that mediates the PCD pathway in animals, although there is limited sequence identity between the two enzymes. VPE and caspase-1 share several structural properties: the catalytic dyads and three amino acids forming the substrate pockets (Asp pocket) are conserved between VPE and caspase-1. In contrast to such similarities, subcellular localizations of these proteases are completely different from each other. VPE is localized in the vacuoles, while caspases are localized in the cytosol. VPE functions as a key molecule of plant PCD through disrupting the vacuole in pathogenesis and development. Cell death triggered by vacuolar collapse is unique to plants and has not been seen in animals. Plants might have evolved a VPE-mediated vacuolar system as a cellular suicide strategy.

In the past two decades, pions created in the high density regions of heavy ion collisions have been predicted to be sensitive at high densities to the symmetry energy term in the nuclear equation of ...state, a property that is key to our understanding of neutron stars. In a new experiment designed to study the symmetry energy, the multiplicities of negatively and positively charged pions have been measured with high accuracy for central 132Sn+124Sn, 112Sn+124Sn, and 108Sn+112Sn collisions at E/A=270 MeV with the SπRIT Time Projection Chamber. While individual pion multiplicities are measured to 4% accuracy, those of the charged pion multiplicity ratios are measured to 2% accuracy. We compare these data to predictions from seven major transport models. The calculations reproduce qualitatively the dependence of the multiplicities and their ratios on the total neutron and proton number in the colliding systems. However, the predictions of the transport models from different codes differ too much to allow extraction of reliable constraints on the symmetry energy from the data. This finding may explain previous contradictory conclusions on symmetry energy constraints obtained from pion data in Au+Au system. These new results call for still better understanding of the differences among transport codes, and new observables that are more sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Importance of the field: Cerebral aneurysms (CAs) are the main cause of life-threatening subarachnoid hemorrhage. Given its prevalence and endpoint, CA treatment is a public health issue. Effective ...medical treatment of CAs is lacking because the detailed mechanisms of CA formation are incompletely understood.
Areas covered in this review: The aim of this contribution is to review recent articles about CA formation, to suggest the underlying mechanisms of CA formation, and to discuss potential therapeutic targets for treatment. Articles were collected by an internet search of PubMed using the keywords 'intracranial' or 'cerebral aneurysm'.
What the readers will gain: A review of articles about the pathogenesis of CA formation focusing on inflammation. Recent articles demonstrate that inflammation-related-molecule induction and inflammatory cell infiltration in CA walls and the close relationship between inflammatory responses and CA formation. From studies in experimental models, chronic inflammation triggered primarily by NF-κB activation in endothelial cells and subsequent macrophage infiltration have critical roles in CA formation. Inhibition of inflammation-related molecules in CA walls results in the decreased incidence of CA formation.
Take-home message: Agents with anti-inflammatory activity (particularly anti- NF-κB effects) have potential as therapeutic drugs for CAs.
This paper discusses the effects of radiation damage to SiPMs on the performances of plastic scintillator counters with series-connected SiPM readout, focusing on timing measurements. The ...performances of a counter composed of a 120×40×5mm3 scintillator tile read out by two sets of six SiPMs from AdvanSiD connected in series attached on the short sides are presented, for different combinations of SiPMs at various levels of irradiation. Firstly, six SiPMs were equally irradiated with electrons from 90Sr sources up to a fluence of Φe−≈3×1012cm−2. The timing resolution of the counter gradually deteriorated by the increase in dark current. The dark current and the deterioration were reduced when the counter was cooled from 30 °C to 10 °C. Secondly, 33 SiPMs were irradiated with reactor neutrons. The fluence levels ranged from Φeq≈8.7×108cm−2 to Φeq≈5.5×1013cm−2. The characteristics of counters read out by series-connected SiPMs with non-uniform damage levels were investigated. The signal pulse height, the time response, and the timing resolution depend on the hit position in the counter when SiPMs’ irradiation is not uniform.

The β-decay half-lives of 38 neutron-rich isotopes from (36)Kr to (43)Tc have been measured; the half-lives of (100)Kr, (103-105)Sr, (106-108)Y, (108-110)Zr, (111,112)Nb, (112-115)Mo, and (116,117)Tc ...are reported here. The results when compared with previous standard models indicate an overestimation in the predicted half-lives by a factor of 2 or more in the A≈110 region. A revised model based on the second generation gross theory of β decay better predicts the measured half-lives and suggests a more rapid flow of the rapid neutron-capture process (r-matter flow) through this region than previously predicted.

Summary
Osteopontin (OPN) is an extracellular matrix protein and immune modulator with a wide range of functions. OPN is recognized as a key cytokine in Th1 immune responses, yet its potential ...involvement in allergic/asthmatic responses has been investigated only recently. Current data from molecular and cellular studies and studies of OPN‐deficient mice provide evidence that OPN plays multiple roles in the regulation of allergic responses, including regulation of IgE response, inflammatory cell migration, and the development of airway fibrosis and angiogenesis. These results suggest that OPN is a pleiotropic cytokine that functions both systemically and locally in tissue mucosa. Notably, OPN is able to exert its effects through different functional domains, and the secreted and intracellular forms of OPN may have distinct functions. Future research to elucidate all aspects of OPN function is needed to ultimately establish its role in the regulation of immune responses and various disease processes, including those critically involved in the development of allergies and asthma.

Slug, a member of the Snail family of transcription factors, plays a crucial role in the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by suppressing several epithelial markers and adhesion ...molecules including E-cadherin. Recently, several studies have reported Slug to be expressed in breast carcinoma, oesophageal carcinoma accompanied with shorter survival. In this study, we first investigated expression of Slug mRNA in five colorectal carcinoma cell lines by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, we investigated Slug and E-cadherin expression by immunohistochemistry in 138 patients with colorectal carcinoma. Slug mRNA was clearly expressed in four out of five colorectal carcinoma cell lines. Positive expression of Slug and E-cadherin was observed in 37 and 58% of cases, respectively. The positive expression of Slug was significantly associated with Dukes stage and distant metastasis (P = 0.0027 and 0.0007), and the positive expression of Slug had a significant impact on patient overall survival (P < 0.0001, log-rank test). Moreover, patients with positive expression of Slug and reduced expression of E-cadherin showed the worst prognosis (P < 0.0001, log-rank test). Multivariate analysis indicated that Slug expression was an independent prognostic factor. These results suggest that positive Slug expression in colorectal carcinoma patients may become a significant parameter of poor prognosis.
